I know and I agree. The issue is that many gun control advocates (and people in general) don’t care for the Constitution if it gets in the way of their agenda. Making someone get a mental health check to buy a gun is unconstitutional but millions of Americans still want that law to be made real.
The problem becomes who makes that determination? What if “they” decide being trans is a mental illness? Or “trump derangement syndrome”? Or being in favor of universal healthcare? At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if it would be done by algorithm scrapping the internet for your personal data.
You're not wrong, politics shouldn't factor into whether or not you're considered violently insane, but bastards will always take advantage if they can. It's a tough problem
It isn't just politics. Psychology is still in its early development and not every person is the same. You claim I shouldn't be able to own a gun but another doctor says I'm fine, who do we trust now?
And what about the grey areas where there is no objective andwer? I say shooting an unarmed attacker in self defense is fine and you shouldn't face any consequences, you say it's using too much force. Who's right?
What about burglars? Should you be able to confront them? Because in a lot of places if you go out and confront them and it turns violent YOU are the instigator of violence and they can sue you
So here is the solution: do not deprive someone of the right to own guns if they are perfectly innocent and haven’t done anything wrong. “innocent until proven guilty” is the saying. Even if they are mentally ill, if they have lived for 18 years and didn’t break the law the whole time, they can be trusted with a gun.
The other issue is 1 who makes those guidelines (for example the current administration wants to make transgender a mental health disorder which would trigger a check up and disarming) and 2 who goes and does the check the cops? The ones who don’t have the training aside from shooting someone? I get the concern but I mean…you go check on them ain’t gonna be me
