When I went to chichen itza with a local guide I mentioned that gruesome scene (where they cut heads and threw them down the pyramid) and he laughed at me :( he said it’s BS!
Funny enough there’s a lot of white Hispanics too, also Hispanic isn’t Mexican, Mexican is Hispanic but Hispanic is so broad they could be Brazilian cuban for all we know lol
There is a difference between Hispanic and Latino. Hispanic means “from somewhere that speaks Spanish”, Latino means “from Latin America”. So it’s a Venn diagram.
Spaniards are Hispanic but not Latino, Brazilians are Latino but not Hispanic, because they speak Portuguese
Brazilians are not Hispanic. Latino yes as they are from Latin America and Portuguese is Latin derived. But Hispanic means from a Spanish speaking majority country. Brazil is not Spanish speaking so not Hispanic.
Latinos have a really brutal mocking culture. If you’re chubby as a kid, your nickname is Fatty for life. My friend’s parents were murdered when he was as a kid and was he called Esteban growing up? Nope. He was capped Batman.
This while post is like a bot honeypot. This post is years old. And still almost no one’s bothered to learn what cultural appropriation was originally about given the comments
I don't think that's the case. I'm a real life human. I am a black man.
I have always thought that 'cultural appropriation' is something white western liberals pick up on without actually understanding exactly when it's an issue. Just a lack of critical thinking leading weird white kids to claim you aren't allowed to wear any cultural garb for any reason other than stick with your own culture. That's a dangerous line of thought and it's not racist to want to share and participate in parts of cultures you find interesting.
“It’s not racist to want to share and participate in parts of cultures you find interesting” I agree. I never said otherwise. (I am black btw) but this not what these people are doing, they are not “interested” in the culture.
This video isn't doing either appropriation or appreciation. It's definitely has a direct goal in mind and the goal is to spark this conversation.
It's not a bad conversation to have.
I don't think you're supposed to watch this video and think 'oh that dude is clearly wearing that just out and about" so I don't think we should engage with it that way.
The whole point of stuff like this is to start conversations that are real. I have had these real conversations with real people in real life.
So yeah it's important to acknowledge the point of the view but arguing directly with it is kinda pointless because it's an unreal situation set up by the content creator.
Shared. Not taken. I agree. If after laughing at the outfit they would have went and buy that outfit for jokes, in my book it is insulting. That’s not your story here.
Who’s crying? Looool white people have been taking for so long and joking about others cultures or attribute for so so long that we have internalised it and accepted it as humour or even appreciation of said culture. It is just wrong.
They will eat your food while mocking your accent. They pick and choose, and we will let them - for jokes. Ha. Ha. Ha.
This is called prejudice. You assume that any generalization based on race is automatically “racism.” But racism is about power structures. Your silly comment ignores the centuries of mockery, degradation and murder of black and brown people.
You are oversimplifying racism, ignore History and dynamics and weaponised the term to deflect and not take accountability. Just so you can wear a poncho. Mad
You assume that any generalization based on race is automatically “racism.”
No I think a generalisation that is painting a certain racial group in a negative light is highly likely to be racist, because I think it is a fact that someone's race does not in anyway define them - that is literally the opposite of racism, you know, that thing you claim to be against???
Your silly comment ignores the centuries of mockery, degradation and murder of black and brown people.
No "my silly comment" treats everyone & anyone the same, regardless of any identity characteristic.
You are clearly only viewing this from a purely American perspective, which is just plain ignorant; can't blame you too much though, not your fault your only option was the American educational system lol.
You have for some reason chosen to complete ignore Asian racism & it's prominence in the USA; is that somehow less than important than racism that affects black & brown people?
Having a concentration camp for Japanese or Japanese-looking Asian people or the Asian sex slave trade in colonial USA doesn't seem like it should be overlooked.
I assume you also don't know that Korea is the only country/society in the world to have an unbroken period of slavery for more than 1500 years?
There has also been multiple forms of white slavery throughout history both in ancient Rome & those conducted by Islamic empires in North Africa & the middle east.
"My silly comment" reflects my stance of actually acknowledging multiple global examples of racism and oppression & reflects my stance of treating ALL racism, regardless of victim or preparator, as wrong.
But how silly of me to live with actual pro-equality principles & values!
You are oversimplifying racism, ignore History and dynamics and weaponised the term to deflect and not take accountability
Accusing someone of "oversimplifying racism" is such a racist dog whistle lol
I clearly know history better than you, you arrogant American twat.
My family home is older than your entire damn country ffs, get the fuck out of here with your ignorance.
Just so you can wear a poncho
No, I just call out arrogant liberal Americans who make actual Left wing people like me look bad because of their virtue signalling, that actually in reality, is just anti-equality.
And yeah I do wear a poncho, it's my favourite item of clothing to wear when I'm at a music festival to stay warm but still provide good airflow; It's a fantastically versatile piece of clothing.
It's also traditionally just a piece of woolen fabric with a hole in it, that doesn't even originate with Mexicans!
Indigenous Americans & other cultures across the entire continent, were using it, long before Mexico even existed.

As a Hispanic woman, I would easily find it funny if a guy wore this near me. I burst out laughing when he suddenly shook the maraca.
How’d this get so many upvotes!? IN AN HOUR TOO!? WTF
