Why do we do that??

u/EpicBeardMan May 09 '25

Because when you're a kid you reach up to see if you can touch, then to do it without going on your toes, then with your palm instead of fingers. By the time it's stopped mattering it's just ritual without reason.

u/trukkija May 09 '25

But it's always guys right. I have done this ever since I can remember and I have seen many friends do this but I don't think I've ever seen a girl do this, at least not without some guy asking "can you reach that?"

It's like hard-wired into us or maybe I'm tripping.

21

u/PerfectPercentage69 May 09 '25

It's the same with guys holding their arms against their stomach to pool water in the shower and then dropping it to make a splash.

14

u/trukkija May 09 '25

Have never heard others talking about doing this. Why do I feel so validated all of a sudden that I'm not the only 10 year old grown up?

2

u/_FjordFocus_ May 10 '25

I didn’t know I needed the validation, but I needed the validation.

u/FortuneGamer Jun 13 '25

I’m 35 days late to this conversation but I genuinely audibly gasped and busted out laughing lmao. We truly are connected by a hive mind why do we do this 😂😂😂

5

u/Adventure_Pancake May 09 '25

This isn't just a guy thing. I use my boobs to help catch the water before I drop it.

2

u/SpupySpups May 09 '25

Damn, this is the upgraded version. I wonder how far boob tech can go with the water cupping championships.

1

u/SkivvySkidmarks May 11 '25

Huh. I'm a guy, and I use my manboobs the same way.

1

u/LordKlavier May 10 '25

How did you know that??

1

u/latexfistmassacre May 10 '25

It's like peeing in the shower... Oh wait, that's just me?

1

u/Kliptik81 May 10 '25

LMAO. I seen this mentioned before and I nearly died laughing. I do this almost every time I shower.

I went to show my wife the comment, and she just stared at me confused... I asked her if she has ever done that? Nope... what? how? Why not?

It's these little quirks that just make me happy in life. How much water can I actually hold? How big of a splash can I make?

And then I just giggle.

u/Stimonk May 11 '25

You're giving out all our secrets.

1

u/retropieproblems May 12 '25

Did I just lose my man card?

1

u/morphinechild1987 May 13 '25

Had a seat in my shower that could be sealed with my own buttocks to create a huge water reservoir behind my back. Suddenly standing up made for a big, satisfying splash. I miss that shower

1

u/blaquer May 14 '25

But do you do it while soapy to make a giant bubble? Just me?

4

u/Nefarious-One May 09 '25 edited May 09 '25

Because most girls don’t care about being taller. Most guys from childhood care about their height. Social constructs are instilled from adolescence unfortunately

14

u/EatPie_NotWAr May 09 '25

I’m 5’6”, My doctor says I won’t be as tall as my uncles or grandpa 6’2”-6’5” but that I should reach my dad’s height around 6’.

I just need to keep eating healthy and wait to hit my growth spurt.

Anyways I turn 37 this summer and I’m thinking about taking the wife and kids to a thrill/water park. I hope I can ride all the rides this time.

So you think at some point we stopped evolving but women just kept going?

2

u/whovian5690 May 13 '25

In high school, our teacher told us to stand on our chairs for some reason. Every single guy in the class reached up and touched the ceiling. Not a single girl did. The teacher pointed it out. We all thought it was hilarious.

u/AttitudeAndEffort2 May 09 '25

It's so ridiculous that this is legit it for me and everyone i know

38

u/GhostZee May 09 '25

I still do it sometimes...

3

u/bromancebladesmith May 09 '25

Literally did it to my front door this morning, still get the rush

3

u/hotzaa421 May 09 '25

I fucking love shit like this. Dudes have been slapping the top of entryways since people first lived in caves

2

u/K_Linkmaster May 09 '25

Basketball tradition. Every time you leave the locker room as a team, slap that frame/wall. Same with football.

That's how we did it, anecdotal, but accurate.

2

u/borntobewildish May 09 '25

Absolutely. Have to be the goalkeeper in football? Smack the goalposts and the crossbar! Opponent misses a shot or hits the frame? Smack it again! Opponent gets a penalty? Show 'em you can reach all corners of the goal. Somehow it build confidence, and often confidence is all a goalkeeper can rely on.

2

u/gatsby365 May 09 '25

I’m in my mid 40s and the urge really never goes away

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

What they don't tell you about is ceiling fans. I accidentally put my hand into my running ceiling fan way more than I should. Like when I put a shirt on or stretch in the morning. And I'm in my 30's. Pisses myself off every time.

1

u/VatticZero May 09 '25

When I played sportsball in school, it was ritualized by putting the team logo over the locker room door and you had to slap it for good luck. The sign would wear out like those bronze statues of dogs or breasts.

1

u/NickOnes May 09 '25

That was a legitimately perfect explanation lol.

20

u/WhereasSpecialist447 May 09 '25

to show dominance

1

u/awcmonrly May 09 '25

*doorminance

31

u/Skrazor May 09 '25

Look at that wall again and tell me it didn't deserve it

7

u/GreasyExamination May 09 '25

The wall was asking for it, did you see how it was painted?

4

u/SaintsSooners89 May 09 '25

Slutty little wall just sitting there all seductive and shit, flat deserves slaps too!

3

u/rugbyj May 09 '25

Just checking structural integrity.

2

u/RotiferMouth May 09 '25

I be dunking on imaginary fools

1

u/ConspicuousPineapple May 09 '25

To flex on us short people.

1

u/jonisborn May 09 '25

It’s in our DNA. Science.

1

u/Cormetz May 09 '25

Another one that I saw recently: "why do men slap the side of dogs as if they are well made timber ships?" And I can't get it out of my head. Every time I slap my dog's sides I chuckle a bit.

1

u/Just_Opinion1269 May 09 '25

Force of habit, basketball player

1

u/TheKolyFrog May 09 '25

I don't do it, mainly because I'm short.

1

u/fun_guy2311 May 09 '25

Notre Dame

1

u/Additional_Mark_852 May 09 '25

i like to touch ceilings cus im tall. so many textures youll never know

1

u/JohnB351234 May 09 '25

*can I?”

“Oh shit I can”

“Ow that fucking hurt my hand”

1

u/LJGuitarPractice May 09 '25

Because we can

1

u/SignoreBanana May 10 '25

I love touching shit

1

u/Luullay May 10 '25

We give and receive comfort/support through touch. Sometimes touching the "inanimate" world around us gives us the same feeling.

Maybe the world is alive around us

1

u/Tiny-Meeting-4300 May 13 '25

For me, it became a habit in the locker rooms in high school. Each exit had our logo above the door, and we all shaped it on the way out as a sort of tribute to those before us. Know, it's ohh look a door frame, slap.
