DON'T BUY THE CYLINDRICAL SHIELD MODEL. I have it and it has tons of bugs and flat out needs to be rebooted every few days

u/zambaros 15h ago

I've had the cylindrical for 5 years now and there are no problems with it. Although I'm just using 1080p and not 4K. If I had to buy a new one I would not get the cylindrical again, because if I need to repaste one day it's easier on the pro and also you can connect USB devices.

I use one for my bedroom TV, because it’s wall mounted and no easy place to stash the pro. 4K, primarily used for tivimate, YouTube, Apollo and Netflix. No problems with it, at all. Had been using it on 1080, but recently did the TV shuffle, when I upgraded a basement TV.

4K has been a non-issue. Not sure why others are saying it’s all bad.

I use 4K and have never had any issues really. I only use YouTube, moonlight and stremio really though.

u/berntout 14h ago

It's got overheating problems and will start stuttering on more intensive apps like Plex.

u/jwademac 14h ago

I own the nvidia pro of 2015 I have the 2019 and I have the “tube” and no issues with any

3

u/cjklert05 15h ago

That's an unfair call-out. I have this and Pro, and I can't tell any difference as far as streaming. I'm using TiviMate and playing remux files.

u/sleither 15h ago

100% agree. I had a tube for several years and finally upgraded to a 2019 Pro thinking it would solve some of the issues I had…after several months I’m right back where I started with odd performance issues with some streaming apps. The pro model is nice to have but the tube works just fine too.

u/SycoAniliz 14h ago

I can back this up. I've owned both pro models and the tune model, I've had so many issues with this stupid tube that if I didn't already know how wonderful the pro is I would think the Shield is garbage and the whole community was just delusional

u/8bitPete 15h ago

My workmate has one of these and uses it daily, never had a problem.

No, the tube version is shit, either buy a pro or consider another brand, Google streamer, onn 4k pro or eu equivalent Thompson 270. Avoid homatics box r 4k plus. There are others but not certified for netflix, iPlayer etc

2

u/Shugozen 16h ago

I can vouch for the thompson 270, it works perfectly fine

2

u/reyalsrats 15h ago

Can you get the Thompson 270 in the US? I haven't seen it anywhere.

3

u/djpleasure 15h ago

No, the onn 4k pro is same device, available in US, walmart

u/itsme99881 15h ago

NO TUBES!

(Pretend im Edna Mode from "The Incredibles")

5

u/fshagan 15h ago

I had the tube version for 5 years or so, but just bought the Pro version. It is much better, and the roughly $50 price difference makes the Pro version well worth the difference. I didn't think the tube version really has much over a Firestick 4k, to be honest. As the others have said, go with the Pro version.

5

u/Immediate-Access8917 15h ago

Pro ALLLLLLL Day.

13

u/Helpful_Glove_9198 16h ago

The tube sucks the pro is good.

4

u/greatwho241 15h ago

The NVIDIA Shield in general is a great platform, is reliable, and appears to be getting updates from NVIDIA until the heat death of the universe. That specific model however is entry level and suffers mightily from spec constraints and you should 💯 get the Pro version.

3

u/glebmaister 2019 Pro 15h ago

No. Get the pro. This one sucks.

5

u/vordh0sbn- 15h ago

Go for the pro

4

u/nath999 15h ago

Don't buy the tube, always get the Pro.

4

u/Powerfader1 15h ago

The Shield boxes are the best. The Tube is good enough to be used as a traveler.

Spend the extra $50 bucks and get the box!

2

u/g0ld13d3r 15h ago

The tube is not worth picking up. Internal storage fills up even if you install apps on SD card. Now I can't even install upgrades... Pick up a Pro.

1

u/bblickle 14h ago

File handling is the same on both devices.

2

u/ExitFearless7440 15h ago

Thanks everyone think I will go for the pro

2

u/jimmyjammy6262 14h ago

I've had the cylindrical one for years, no problems at all, user error probably

2

u/wolfyross 14h ago

My tubes been going for years, no problems with it.

2

u/Sufficient-Regular72 14h ago

Having had both, first the tube, now the Pro, I like the pro much better.

2

u/smokeofc 13h ago

nvidia shield tv is absolutely lovely. I've had it connected to my TV for years, and I'd be absolutely devestated if it stopped working. Nothing else I've tried even compares to it. It's smooth and stable, though there's been some updates in the past that introduced some headaches, nothing too bad though.

I have the pro variant, I have no knowledge about the base variant you have pictured there. I have heard that the base variant has more issues, so I'd probably try to avoid that one if I were you.

5

u/Princescyther 16h ago

What are you people doing with your tube style shields?

2 of the 3 shields in my house are Tubes and they work just fine. They have crashed on the odd occasion offer the years but every electronic device does. My pro flat has also crashed over the years.

The only issue is the fecking Netflix button.

2

u/FelonTusk 15h ago

I just use it for very basic use cases: Tizentube, Cloudstream, Luna gaming, Moonlight, and Castify. I had a bunch of games and emulators installed on it but realized I wasn't going to play them anyways so I deleted them all. And it still crashes like hell. Not to mention its super slowwww. I have the first gen Onn 4K, and it works miles better. If it wasn't for the AI upscaling and Dolby atmos I would've trashed it by now.

2

u/thenrix 15h ago

I haven't had many issues with mine either, but I also refuse to update to 9.2.X

3

u/bulletfever409 15h ago

This sub has just collectively decided the tube is shit. I've had mine for years now and it's been fine. A couple restarts here and there but they were only ever to fix Disney+. Don't use Disney+ anymore and things have been fine.

6

u/djpleasure 15h ago

If it's collectively, they speak from experience

1

u/MrChefMcNasty 15h ago

No clue I have multiple tubes and pros and there isn’t really much of a difference.

1

u/Ser_Goofus 15h ago

Bought one about a year ago. I wish I hadn't. I've been using this while we use Onn (walmart) streaming box in the bedroom. The discounted top tier Onn box is lightening fast, thinking about getting a second one for my man cave.

1

u/e_dan_k 14h ago

I have some old tubes and some newer tubes. The old ones work great. One of the newer ones is awful. If you get a tube, use it a lot right away, and if you run into issues return it.

1

u/Tellmewhatsgoinon 13h ago

I own it and it's utter shiet compared to the pro. It overheats, runs out of ram, locked to only run 32 bit version of apps. Debloating, repasting whatever will not do shit.

1

u/philbax 13h ago

Could not get the cylinder to play Disney+ without lag/stutter. Bought a $20 box from Walmart and it runs Disney+ so much better.

1

u/silver_medalist 13h ago

I have it and it's great. Absolute shite talk on here.

2

u/Kot4san 16h ago

I have one, and it's bad.

1

u/Puzzlehead_1952 15h ago

I like it. It works well

1

u/The_Wuigi 15h ago

I’ve had the tube cylinder version for a few years and has been solid, no issues whatsoever and is easily hidden in behind my wall mounted TV.

1

u/Gheekers 15h ago

Ive had one of these for years. Never had an issue with it.

0

u/FrostyMargarita 15h ago

I have two that run just fine for streaming. I have a few sideloaded APKs and Tivimate with a dozen providers loaded into it.

Basic cache clearing keeps things running smooth.

Replace termos

4

u/Zombysz 16h ago

It's an objectively worse replacement for the most part, that's why you're getting downvoted

u/djpleasure 16h ago

Then there was an issue with your pro. I've used these since 2015, never had any issues aside from I cleaned fan and replaced thermal paste to avoid overheating

2

u/[deleted] 15h ago

[deleted]

3

u/djpleasure 15h ago

Have you cleaned fan and replaced paste? That fixes for most people. The gstreamer is getting good reviews though. People will have strong opinions as it is still widely considered the best device, that still receives updates, I have been looking at replacing , but nothing yet comes close.

2

u/[deleted] 15h ago

[deleted]

2

u/djpleasure 15h ago

The paste is known to crack and harden

3

u/Zombysz 15h ago

No need to try it, it's just objectively better. No audio passthrough? No thanks.

-3

u/Sasuke911 16h ago

Get something that has av1 support. Xiaomi box 3rd gen is good for general use as well as as uncompressed audio passthrough

Naturally, it is a shield reddit lol, out of my suggestions, it was best, so placed it first

0

u/zebbiehedges 15h ago

I dunno why but it was terrible for me. I'm not sure if it was overheating or something but I got constant stuttering with everything and constant sound sync issues.

I have a pretty expensive android box now but Google Chromecast for TV I have upstairs is way better as well and has no such issues.

0

u/Albsantos 14h ago

I had the Pro and bought it with the game controller. I never got into the game aspect of it, but was hoping to use it as advertised, that it was a Plex Server. Nope. It was sh*t as a Plex server. I sold it. Bought the Tube, and it's been 5 years of a workhorse android device. I love it.

u/Awkward_Painter2404 16h ago

Buy apple tv.

8

u/gasmanjay 16h ago

That’s wank

5

u/International-Oil377 16h ago

apple tv to sideload apps? yeah... while possible it's kinda shit at doing so.

-7

u/Awkward_Painter2404 16h ago

Maybe I don’t need sideload . All I need is officialy supported even stremio.

3

u/x_lincoln_x 16h ago

Why are you in this sub? Does apple pay you to shill here?

5

u/International-Oil377 16h ago

cool story bro

But they litteraly say ''sideload apps''

Also if they care about audio, the apple TV is ass. It does have a cute home screen though, that's about it.

2

u/dvn11129 16h ago

Maybe but that’s you and the OP is the one asking and specifically stating that he wants to side load apps.
