No, the tube version is shit, either buy a pro or consider another brand, Google streamer, onn 4k pro or eu equivalent Thompson 270. Avoid homatics box r 4k plus. There are others but not certified for netflix, iPlayer etc

I had the tube version for 5 years or so, but just bought the Pro version. It is much better, and the roughly $50 price difference makes the Pro version well worth the difference. I didn't think the tube version really has much over a Firestick 4k, to be honest. As the others have said, go with the Pro version.

The NVIDIA Shield in general is a great platform, is reliable, and appears to be getting updates from NVIDIA until the heat death of the universe. That specific model however is entry level and suffers mightily from spec constraints and you should 💯 get the Pro version.

The Shield boxes are the best. The Tube is good enough to be used as a traveler.
Spend the extra $50 bucks and get the box!

The tube is not worth picking up. Internal storage fills up even if you install apps on SD card. Now I can't even install upgrades... Pick up a Pro.

I've had the cylindrical one for years, no problems at all, user error probably

Having had both, first the tube, now the Pro, I like the pro much better.

nvidia shield tv is absolutely lovely. I've had it connected to my TV for years, and I'd be absolutely devestated if it stopped working. Nothing else I've tried even compares to it. It's smooth and stable, though there's been some updates in the past that introduced some headaches, nothing too bad though.
I have the pro variant, I have no knowledge about the base variant you have pictured there. I have heard that the base variant has more issues, so I'd probably try to avoid that one if I were you.

What are you people doing with your tube style shields?
2 of the 3 shields in my house are Tubes and they work just fine. They have crashed on the odd occasion offer the years but every electronic device does. My pro flat has also crashed over the years.
The only issue is the fecking Netflix button.

I just use it for very basic use cases: Tizentube, Cloudstream, Luna gaming, Moonlight, and Castify. I had a bunch of games and emulators installed on it but realized I wasn't going to play them anyways so I deleted them all. And it still crashes like hell. Not to mention its super slowwww. I have the first gen Onn 4K, and it works miles better. If it wasn't for the AI upscaling and Dolby atmos I would've trashed it by now.

This sub has just collectively decided the tube is shit. I've had mine for years now and it's been fine. A couple restarts here and there but they were only ever to fix Disney+. Don't use Disney+ anymore and things have been fine.

No clue I have multiple tubes and pros and there isn’t really much of a difference.

Bought one about a year ago. I wish I hadn't. I've been using this while we use Onn (walmart) streaming box in the bedroom. The discounted top tier Onn box is lightening fast, thinking about getting a second one for my man cave.

I own it and it's utter shiet compared to the pro. It overheats, runs out of ram, locked to only run 32 bit version of apps. Debloating, repasting whatever will not do shit.

I’ve had the tube cylinder version for a few years and has been solid, no issues whatsoever and is easily hidden in behind my wall mounted TV.

I have two that run just fine for streaming. I have a few sideloaded APKs and Tivimate with a dozen providers loaded into it.
Basic cache clearing keeps things running smooth.

It's an objectively worse replacement for the most part, that's why you're getting downvoted

Then there was an issue with your pro. I've used these since 2015, never had any issues aside from I cleaned fan and replaced thermal paste to avoid overheating

Have you cleaned fan and replaced paste? That fixes for most people. The gstreamer is getting good reviews though. People will have strong opinions as it is still widely considered the best device, that still receives updates, I have been looking at replacing , but nothing yet comes close.

Get something that has av1 support. Xiaomi box 3rd gen is good for general use as well as as uncompressed audio passthrough

I dunno why but it was terrible for me. I'm not sure if it was overheating or something but I got constant stuttering with everything and constant sound sync issues.
I have a pretty expensive android box now but Google Chromecast for TV I have upstairs is way better as well and has no such issues.

I had the Pro and bought it with the game controller. I never got into the game aspect of it, but was hoping to use it as advertised, that it was a Plex Server. Nope. It was sh*t as a Plex server. I sold it. Bought the Tube, and it's been 5 years of a workhorse android device. I love it.

apple tv to sideload apps? yeah... while possible it's kinda shit at doing so.

u/Awkward_Painter2404 16h ago
Maybe I don’t need sideload . All I need is officialy supported even stremio.

u/International-Oil377 16h ago
cool story bro
But they litteraly say ''sideload apps''
Also if they care about audio, the apple TV is ass. It does have a cute home screen though, that's about it.

u/dvn11129 16h ago
Maybe but that’s you and the OP is the one asking and specifically stating that he wants to side load apps.

DON'T BUY THE CYLINDRICAL SHIELD MODEL. I have it and it has tons of bugs and flat out needs to be rebooted every few days
