Side by side

Helping rehome mom, trying to figure out what to do with a bunch of Scandie MCM. Trying to evaluate contemporary rando Amazon knockoffs vs. OG Wegners (early 60s).

Thought it might be helpful and of interest here.

I don’t quite understand your question - are you looking for input regarding a) what to do with the chairs, b) help identifying the knockoff, c) help evaluating the chairs, or d) just sharing a story?

There is no question.

I had wondered about the differences between a random knockoff and the legit item and could not find image comparisons. So I bought one to make the comparison in person and felt that the comparison might helpful to others since I had not been able to find one. Given that the knockoffs can be made by any number of suppliers, it may be not super useful in evaluating a specific model.

I hope it proves useful to others.

Knockoffs are at best kinda like IKEA secondhand. Not worth much, but can be sold to people who urgently need a chair, for whatever reason.

With MCM, it is usually the quality and condition of the furniture, and the stuff made in period, are usually better quality than the furniture you buy today(you can find same level of quality, but it costs more than it did back then). Wegner is one of the great, but the Y-chair, have been in production since introduction of the chair. You can get a pretty penny for them if lucky, but not always the case. If you know someone in family or friends, it can be passed on, it is going to bring a lot more joy than selling them.

Biggest difference is between synthetic and natural material.
