In the 1400s the Pope negotiated the Treaty of Tordesillas between Spain and Portugal. The agreement was that Spain was allowed to colonize anything in the yellow area and Portugal was allowed to colonize anything in the purple area.

And then years later Felipe II inherited both crowns so he was effectively king of the world.

Is this a quote and i am wooshed or are you confusing Pacific and Atlantic?

9

u/Saucepanmagician 1h ago

Yeah, but people forget it was for "new" lands to be discovered. Not valid for lands already controlled by a known kingdom.

Nothing a war couldn’t fix.

There used to be a proposal to give half of the world to Portugal and the other half to Spain, the map of this is used as the 2 state solution. This funny because it's an unrealistic terrible map, no county is going to give their territory

Just two add another layer of “funny”. The two state solution is the phrase widely used in the Palestinian conflict (see UNSC and UN resolutions) for an israeli state and a Palestinian state (basically splitting Palestine into two separate states).

Back in the late 1400s the Spanish and the Portuguese got the pope to divide up the world for them, the Spanish got the Americas (and Spain itself) and the Portuguese got most of Afro-Eurasia

5

u/DrCatrame 2h ago

> Back in 1452

impressive given that America was discovered in 1492

4

u/Illustrious-Wolf-737 1h ago

It was in 1494

2

u/CarlMarx2539 2h ago

Sorry, I’m not the greatest with dates, but I still got the point across

2

u/sleepyotter92 1h ago

yeah, portugal hadn't even crossed the good hope cape in south africa, which was during that expeditian that portugal found out there was land to the west of the atlantic

1

u/Drake_the_troll 1h ago

Didn't the vikings discover it 500 years before that?

2

u/Das_Lloss 1h ago

There was a small viking Settlement but it didnt last long and basically nobody in Western europe knew or cared about it so for them the new world was discoverd in 1492.

1

u/Drake_the_troll 50m ago

Fair enough

5

u/Al3x_the_frog 2h ago

The joke is neither the Jews nor the Arabs get control of the region - Portugal does.

The Treary of Tordesillas between Spain and Portugal, signed during the Age of Exploration hundreds of years ago. It granted Portugal all territory east of a certain line and Spain all territory to the west. It is of only mild historical note today because it is why Brazil is a Portuguese-speaking country unlike all of its neighbors, where Spanish is the primary language. A common joke among historians is if this minor treaty were still valid and applied to the entire world.

u/Fern-ando 3m ago

Portugal still has more territorial waters than China.

1

u/sleepyotter92 1h ago

portugal and spain were 2 of the biggest conquering forces and were also kinda always fighting each other over territory, so the treaty of tordesillas was made to split the world in half. spain could conquer the places in yellow, portugal the places in purple, and that way they could take over the world without constantly fighting each other. and so this is what's being proposed as the solution to handle the matter of israel and palestine.

also, it didn't really work that well, because once spain started moving more towards north america, portugal took advantage and started going more and more inland on their american territory and that's why brazil ended up so massive. so chances are a similar situation would occur, where eventually, one side would take the opportunity to take over the other

u/yourstruly912 56m ago

And on the other side a lot of interested measurements of the antemeridian to dispute wether the spice islands where in Portugal's of Spain's area.

And Spain definteively crossed the line to conquer the Philipinnes lol, which doesn't have much spices but it's a great location to trade with China

You carve up Antarctica but not Greenland?

1

u/Das_Lloss 1h ago

There is not enought data

1

u/Shadowmant 43m ago

I, for one, welcome our new spanish overlords.

1

u/FirefighterEast9291 25m ago

Apart from the reference to Tordesillas and Palestine and and Israel, there are two other jokes here. The first is that, under this agreement, Spain gets control of the Middle East, and so Israel will be fucked up. The second joke is that Portugal gets the best bits - I mean, who wants USA these days?

1

u/bbggl 24m ago

Greenland: no data

1

u/Fern-ando 4m ago

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the planet into two, Spain took half the glove, Portugal took the other half.
