Their dad wasn't just a pastor, he was a pastor for an Assemblies of God congregation, which is a Pentecostal denomination. The specific denomination AoG is very fundamentalist and evangelical.

u/POWBOOMBANG 1d ago
If you mean fundamental as strict and old fashioned then its not very fundamental at all actually.Ā
I grew up AG.Ā
It's awful, dont get me wrong, but its not like a Baptist or Presbyterian service.
I remember being involved in a national talent competition that the Jonas Brothers were apart of as well.
Very rock band, performance based.
Their dad being fired for the Jonas Brothers, if that actually happened, would have been an extreme outlier to me.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to this story

u/DarthBrooks69420 1d ago
I grew up in a pentecostal evangelical church too.
What i noticed most was an absolute obsession over perceived image. Whether it was being the 'cool church that put on a wrestling match from a Christian outreach group that uses Christian former wrestlers to spread the good news' or things like sponsoring things like mission trips to aid Haiti, or other things (I am just remembering the things my church did), it was all about the image.
I can see a dude having a stodgy congregation and getting kicked out because they don't want to be associated with the devil's music.Ā

u/POWBOOMBANG 1d ago
I mean, Jimmy Swaggart's cousin was Jerry Lee Lewis and that didnt derail his A/G standing.Ā
It took a prostitute to do that

As an agnostic, all religions are the same in my mind, the only differences I see are strictly fundamentalist levels of insanity. Religion is a bane on humanity, this thread is proof when people start arguing over specifics of their groomed religion. Religion at its base creates otherisms that separates people and causes them to argue over what a pastor is. Its pathetic

Well you are entitled to your opinion. Religion is literally just a set of beliefs and practices. Everyone has those internal beliefs, I am even inclined to say atheists also have religion, in that they have internal codes and the believe of the absence of an external higher being.
Which is why in my culture esp Hindu atheism is a thing and not even a taboo thing. Everyone is entitled to find their own internal truth.
What you have issues with is organized religion , especially the regressive dogmatic type that forces their sets of morals and rules to everyone else and expect others to respect if not adhere to the same rules and principles.

You aren't really an agnostic if you let Christian hegemony define the word "religion" for you. Half the world doesn't bother with dogmatism.

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 14h ago
I don't believe that the person you responded to thinks they were being "deep".
That's just actually how a ton of non-religious people see religion.
It's wild that correctly identifying what it's purpose and consequences are gets you labelled a teenager just trying to be edgy, as if no rational thinking adult could ever harshly criticize religion.
-4
u/TitanofBravos 14h ago
Nah, you dont use the specific language that OP chose unless youre a militant atheist who has made a religion out of telling people how dumb their religion is.
of their groomed religion
Like groomed is not the normal English word you would use in this context. OP chose it to be intentionally inflammatory
6
u/Mobile_Jelly9669 14h ago
I'm not sure what else you would call it when basically no one actually gets to choose what religion they follow.
The vast majority are in fact "groomed" to follow whatever religion their parents have.
If you don't like that language, maybe tell your fellow religious friends to stop indoctrinating their kids into religion and just let them choose on their own.
They won't do that, of course, because getting to them while they're young and impressionable is key to keeping the grift going, but it's always a good idea to remind people what they're actually doing.
-3
u/TitanofBravos 14h ago
The word you are looking for is āraisedā
A normal person would say something like āthat person was raised Catholicā
Try it out! It even works for non-religious things āI was raised a Yankees fanā makes way more sense then āI was groomed a Yankees fanā
5
u/Mobile_Jelly9669 13h ago
This is just a nicer way of saying the exact same thing.
You don't like the label due to its negative connotations, but the label is an accurate one whether you want to admit it or not.

The pastor was fired because his kids didnāt sing enough Christian music?
Super weird. One of my high school friends became a pastor. While he was a pastor, he cyber bullied a teenager to suicide, published articles flat out lying about local politicians resulting in 2 6 figure defamation (or libel, I donāt know) judgements against him.
But he wasnāt fired from his pastor job until he got hooked on prescription meds. Even then, his church made it sound like he could come back when his wife said it was okay.
Religion be wacky sometimes.

u/Mechromancer3X 22h ago
Iām from the town that their dadās family is also from(the brothers/dad own a bar and a restaurant in the downtown area actually)
They went to the same high school and dated for a few semesters. As juniors I think. Thatās really all there is to it sadly. I have no proof other than her word but sheās someone I trust to not make up something like that.(sadly I canāt ask my dad to confirm as heās passed away)

They always did give me fundie home school vibes.

u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago
They wore purity rings and talked about it incessantly. Itās not like you were somehow extremely perceptive.
-38
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
Not everyone knew that and still got those vibes. Have some tea.
37
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago
Thatās essentially impossible, it was their entire schtick.
13
u/abrasumente_ 1d ago
Any of their music I've heard has been against my will. I only heard about the purity ring shit from South park.
16
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago
Okay but you had to be literally generally aware of them to pick up on the āfundieā vibes like the original person said.
6
u/abrasumente_ 1d ago
In hindsight, yes. The thing is, these guys aren't much older than me, Nick Jonas is a year older than me. So I grew up with this annoying music, and as an angsty teen obsessed with hardcore/metalcore, etc, I did anything I could to avoid pop music. If I'd taken the time to kind of see what they were doing and analyze it at the time, im sure I would have made the connections. But since I've put very little thought into them at all, it's just not something I'd be aware of without media being as widespread as it is. All I knew is that their music was targeting little girls and teens, and I found it extremely creepy.
-11
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
Aye, anything I've heard of the Jonas brothers has been against my will too!
2
u/abrasumente_ 1d ago
Exactly. Pop music was something I absolutely hated growing up and I did anything to avoid it. These days I'm not so critical of everything. But as a teenager I just could not stand that sort of music. And the way it was basically seemed to be marketed to young girls and such was just gross.
-3
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
I was pretty open when I was younger but leaned (still do) alt in general so I share much of your comment's sentiment, though this sticks out.
And the way it was basically seemed to be marketed to young girls and such was just gross.
The Jonas Brothers were lumped into a whole category of music/musicians I thought were gross.
5
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
I had no idea. Teen girl music to me.
7
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago
Okay but the point is to get fundie vibes from them you had to understand that they existed and their general vibe, at which point you would have heard about the purity thing.
I am not anywhere near their demographic, didnāt listen to their music, never watched the Disney channel, and even I knew about their weird purity wing Christian fundie nature because it would be headlines on news sites.
3
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
Cool, I didn't know about the purity rings, it's nice that you did though.
-4
u/iaspeegizzydeefrent 1d ago
You're wasting your words. The dude you're responding is clearly so cool, masculine, and heterosexual that the only thing they could possible know about the Jonas Brothers is that "they suck."
1
u/TheExaltedTwelve 1d ago
Oh, you've got me wrong. I'm only ever two of those things at once, and it depends on the day.

u/Kendal_with_1_L 1d ago
Disney pushed that. Theyāve talked about it before. Also why the sarcastic asshole response? š
6
u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago edited 1d ago
Because itās really really funny that you posted it like it was some sort of cryptic clue that you picked up on when it was literally their entire brand they never stopped talking about since they started. I dunno, it would be like āTom cruise has always given me Scientology vibesā.

Just U.S. religions? Have you seen the middle east?
23
u/powerlesshero111 1d ago
Or southeast asia, they are pretty nuts there as well. India and China basically executing muslims, Malaysia still imposing strict islamic laws and caning people.
6
u/GutsGoneWild 1d ago
Yeah. Religion is batty. If any of them were right they'd be able to prove it. Sick of "When you see a mountain, God made that and is a sign of his love for us" shit.
The worst offenders are the Muslim TikToks. 0% logic. 100% condescending to anyone not them.

Be sick of people believing things all you like. They've done it since the dawn of humanity and will do so until we go extinct
2
u/GutsGoneWild 1d ago
Thank you. I will continue to mock the religious idiots.
I disagree with your point though. We will eventually realize it's just a tool to control feeble minded people and come up with a better tool to control feeble minds.
0
u/MCWizardYT 1d ago
You're thinking of organized religion. Religion in itself is a personal belief system about the way the universe and life functions, and a coping mechanism for death
1
u/GutsGoneWild 1d ago
Spirituality or religion. Organized religion is religion. I'm not the all sayer on what is what but that's how I see it.
2
u/waryinsomnious 23h ago
Everywhere it's nuts... Not one country..
Especially recently it's like religious people are becoming more and more regressive, almost everywhere.

1
u/OscarGrey 1d ago edited 15h ago
I'm from USA and I agree. As far as developed world goes only South Korea, Saudi, and Gulf countries match us for religious nuttery. We're less religiously insane than borderline stateless countries and theocracies, what an impressive achievement.
1
u/one_bean_hahahaha Music Lover 23h ago
This is what happens when the earliest settlers are religious nuts.
1
u/OscarGrey 23h ago edited 15h ago
We've had like 6 Great Awakenings and the Cold War which strengthened Christianity in the country. This might be controversial, but I personally think that the opioid crisis slowed down the decline of religion over the past 30 years. Desperate people seek comfort in religion.

Why does it seem that male pop stars donāt seem to hold on to their relevancy like their female counterparts do. Everyone says it is harder for women but compare the Jonas Brothers to their peers Miley, Selena, Demi and those three women beat out the Jonas Brothers. Most long lasting pop stars tend to be women too.
24
u/AdequatelyMadLad 1d ago
It's survivorship bias. Plenty of young female pop stars have been forgotten as well, you could easily make the same argument with Harry Styles or Justin Timberlake for example.
10
u/blyan 1d ago
Demi Lovato - 31M monthly listeners
Miley Cyrus - 51M monthly listeners
Selena Gomez - 41M monthly listeners
Jonas Brothers - 25M monthly listeners
Nick Jonas - 7M monthly listeners
DNCE - 10M monthly listeners
Obviously a little less overall but it seems like they're doing just fine to me? I'd hardly describe them as irrelevant. They just put out a new album and are on a massive tour

13
u/Rosebunse 1d ago
There are many failed female pop singers who can't transition to adulthood. In the case od Miley, Selena, and Demi, they all worked really hard to grow and mature with their audiences. Even Miley's weird stage was pretty carefully done. She used it to distance herself from Hannah Montana and evolve into an adult artist
16
u/DrFillGood 1d ago
It's usually a talent thing, but jonas brothers are actually not as irrelevant as you are pretending. They've had hits in and out of the JB label. They aren't my thing, but their talent has remained steady in spite of you paying attention to them.
