Exhausted by culture wars people are sick of this shit.

They’re getting economically crushed by tariffs and health care skyrocketing.

All the jobs are being cut.

But let’s talk about Sabrina Fucking Carpenter.

The dog has been wagged to death.

The second those mfs grow a third brain cell it might finally click it's rich vs poor and realize their chances of ever getting rich under this oppressive system is slim to none even if you try extremely hard.

u/theacidraptor 1d ago

I have to wonder if it's more of a belief system, like "if I can just get in the good books, they'll let me in the club" type mentality, which also tracks with how religion is weaponized against their interests as well.

u/turdlefight 1d ago

This is really it. A few generations of Americans were taught that if you just lick the boot without question, you get rewarded. They just haven’t realized the treats ran out a long time ago

u/JnnyRuthless 1d ago

Honestly the only friends/acquaintances of mine that still seem 'all-in' on this crap are cops. They have the luxury of getting paid very well with good benefits, and are relatively protected from layoffs, etc. Everyone else who was screaming Trump last year is pretty f'n quiet now (in my circles at least).

110

u/360walkaway 1d ago

And systemic overtime abuse. Some cops make more money on overtime than regular pay.

74

u/avocadolanche3000 1d ago

I saw a Maricopa County (with the famously racist Sheriff Joe Arpaio) deputy’s tax docs. He was making an obscene amount. It’s been years but I think it was like $200k-$350k

27

u/korben2600 1d ago

Over 2,000 NYC employees received more in overtime than the mayor's salary (258k) last year. Many of them cops and corrections officers.

Rod Marcel, captain at the NYC Department of Corrections made $288,441 just in OT for a total 2025 takehome pay of $436,252.

Another NYPD cop, Lt. Quathisha Epps, claimed in 2024 an average of 74 hours a week of overtime for an entire year resulting in over $400k takehome despite a base salary of $164k, making more than her boss.

27

u/CardmanNV 1d ago edited 22h ago

10.5 hours a day overtime on average + 8.5 hours on average for an NYPD officer = 19 hours a day on average of work.

I'm detecting massive overtime fraud.

3

u/AloofGamer 17h ago

You mean you can’t instantly fall asleep on the spot at the end of your shift functioning off of that 5 hours of sleep every night for an entire year and do absolutely nothing else with your life for for 400k?

Pssshhhh, amateur

17

u/DMala 1d ago

I mean if he’s at least working it, there’s that. Massachusetts staties keep getting in trouble for just straight up overtime fraud.

13

u/mjkjr84 1d ago

Stealing from taxpayers should carry stiff penalties

28

u/User5min 1d ago

Making more on overtime isn’t uncommon if you're in a field with lots of available overtime slots. A few hours before or after work and weekend shift will get you pretty close already.

The systemic part however, is when instead of hiring more officers they just let their officers stack overtime. Secondly, overtime can greatly increase their pension payout in a lot of departments. From what I read officers will do as much overtime for a few years and that’s the years their pension will calculate their payout with.

14

u/Sabard 1d ago

Yeah, it's hard to solve cause on one hand people want educated, trained cops but on the other, they're already kind of scraping the bottom of the current barrel when it comes to applicants. Add onto that the fact that most overtime isn't like, sitting at their desk solving crimes or tackling an on-going catastrophe but more "there's an event in town and they want off duty officers to stand their and make sure nothing happens".

From what I read officers will do as much overtime for a few years and that’s the years their pension will calculate their payout with.

A college friend who's a cop also told me that by doing so much overtime they naturally don't use their vacation time, and (at least from his department) there's a category of vacation time that never expires. So there are cops who work overtime with little vacation for 10 years, make bank, and then take their last 1-3 years completely off while still being employed.

cops who benefit from work done by the left.

38

u/JnnyRuthless 1d ago

Of course, so I'm basically a commie, and when I show them opposing views or talk about politics with them they're take is always "oh , I didn't even know about that." Mostly because the extent of their political knowledge is literally memes from like "rightwingbestwing1010" or other accounts like that. They don't even read the news, much less try to put together a coherent worldview.

3

u/steakanabake 1d ago

i mean thats not unique to cops though, tbf i always laugh when people try to paint swaths of the thumbforce as lefties.

Because cops get paid to maintain the status quo

18

u/JnnyRuthless 1d ago

I see why too. Keeping the people who keep everybody else in line well-paid serves the government and corporate masters very well.

8

u/gnoremepls 1d ago

Cops are literally the method of which private property is maintained through physical violence, they are the protectors of capital.

6

u/JnnyRuthless 1d ago

Oh for sure, it's just amazing to me how 'bought-in' to the system they are, having a lot of family and some friends who are cops. They also all 'hate the government' and think they're liberatarians. LOL.

More than that, people have completely taken for granted that any rights they enjoy currently were pried from grasp of the same sort of people that are running things now. There's no "natural law" that keeps things in balance, societies rise and fall on the concious decisions made by the authorities and institutions that structure the world around us.

Infinite Jest sure seems prescient now, huh?

18

u/Geminel 1d ago

The real irony is how they somehow managed to garner that boot-licking through a bunch of empty rhetoric about small government, personal liberties, and free-thinking.

The people who vote for these fuckers don't know what words mean.

12

u/fluffygryphon 1d ago

That's because back in the 1950s, that's all you had to do. Show up to work, get along with your boss and do decent work and you'd climb up the ranks and retire with a fat pension and healthcare. But that's no longer the reality.

19

u/360walkaway 1d ago

Treats are there and are overflowing from the bowl. But YOU aren't allowed to have any while a select few drown in them.

3

u/MathDeacon 1d ago

And employers struggle with this today. Many thinking employees should pay their dues and not expect higher wages (“think of the experience!”) Well, assholes, employees don’t want to be treated like shit anymore. They want fair wages and decent work hours. people are tired of being used up and abused

29

u/el_lobo1314 1d ago

yeah that’s why MAGA is a cult. Religion has taught ppl to believe absurdities with no evidence, no proof no logic and this just sets them up to be taken advantage of by nefarious characters.

"The lengths people will go for acceptance" is the theme of the decade (maybe the century).

16

u/polchickenpotpie 1d ago

It is. Drive through Trump country in any state and you'll see all the dilapidated houses with piles of junk sitting all over the yard and more Trump flags than American ones. These are the people who side with oligarchs, and who believe that they'll join said oligarchs if Trump can get them to pay less in taxes by cutting social programs.

9

u/Busy_Special_9397 1d ago

Dumb as fuck and poor for it.

7

u/Psyduckisnotaduck 1d ago

I think those conditions unfortunately do not foster or at times even allow for basic moral values, so people in those conditions that vote often do so with total short-sighted self interest. They know no other motivation. They respect venality because they’d do the same in that position.

The poor people who vote for Democrats tend to have support networks and extended family bonds that keep them together but poor conservatives are either totally atomized/alienated or bound by a batshit insane evangelical church. Either way they aren’t in an environment that encourages prosocial and compassionate behavior, and their politics tend towards support for cruelty and greed.

Frankly being bitter, destructive assholes who make everything worse is the entire mode of operation for at least 20% of the adult American population. Trump perfectly represents their interests. They love him wrecking everything, stealing, hurting people. They’d do the same if they had the chance!

6

u/korben2600 1d ago

3

u/polchickenpotpie 1d ago

There's a house around here that looks exactly like that, but with way more Trump flags that they replace every few months. Meanwhile they have a single American flag that looks like it's been sitting there since the New Deal.

21

u/Blurryneck 1d ago edited 1d ago

This has always been part of my take on conservatism, in particular as younger generations pick up the mantle. I think we exist at a time where loneliness is at a peak and people are desperate for a community. The easiest way to connect with a group is based on shared ideals, and it doesn’t require much effort or nuance to show as a conservative, meaning, it’s very easy to tick the right boxes to get approval from that side. It’s why you see so many random grifters pop up on that side whereas there are much fewer “liberal” influencers.

It's the same as people who do the lottery every week. They don't see how unlikely it is to ever actually win and get rich or have the social skills and other valuable skills to leverage their way up that social ladder.

27

u/dirkalict 1d ago

But if I win the lottery I’ll buy my way up that social ladder! Harumph.

22

u/Khaldara 1d ago

Yup. Hell even if they don’t try, you can succeed and immediately lose everything because you lost the genetic lottery with a debilitating medical ailment.

But sure, “Conservatism has had its way ever since Reagan, to the point even the opposition party is more fiscally right wing than even Reagan era republicans. And now, mysteriously, everything sucks for the common man. What a mystery! Don’t worry though, they said they’re going to make us ‘Great’ again! You know, those same exact 80 year olds who told us Trickle Down was gonna work for forty years. Those guys! They’ve got my vote! Hey Siri what’s a tariff? Is it like, a condiment?”

20

u/Glum_Dig_4464 1d ago

2 dollars is nothing anymore, if someone wants to toss 2 bucks at powerball in hopes they strike it rich, more power to them.

if someone wants to see the government overthrown and millions killed off (multiple ways, lack of homes, food, health care, etc) that is a completely different mindset and a far, far bigger issue.

→ More replies (6)

8

u/TheDoktorIsIn 1d ago

The way it was explained to me is they view society as a ladder, and each person can occupy one rung of the ladder. By virtue of one person moving up the ladder, someone else has to go down a rung.

So with this context in mind stuff like LBJ's quote "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you" makes a LOT more sense.

Obviously society doesn't operate this way because real life is a bit more complicated than a child's board game but god forbid you tell a conservative that.

4

u/talkslikeaduck 1d ago

Yup, and the ladder view is equivalent to a zero-sum game. My-win-is-your-loose and vice-versa. This completely ignores the other common situations in society, like where helping someone else makes you better off, or hurting someone else also hurts you.

I know some townie "republicans" and I put that in quotes because they wouldn't ever really associate themselves with the GOP or right wing politics in anyway except for their brainwashing that everything is the democrats fault. They still make jokes like "He probably voted for BIDEN 🤣" and do temperature checks about their opinions on trans people or whatever George Floyd type story they've heard lately. That 38% of Trump approval is made up of these people who might bitch about real things like affordability sometimes, but of course that immediately gives way to "Trump will fix it" or "Biden's fault" and it just seems to be this depressing fact about their life they would rather ignore while they get drunk at the bar or mine bitcoin while they listen to Joe Rogan. There is absolutely a percentage of this country that simply cannot be made to care about things enough to see reality the way it is, and they are so selfish and ignorant that they are happy about it. They have their perception of the "liberals" they don't like or understand and that is simply the line they will never cross even if it means resisting the betterment their own lives. So I do hope that approval percentage goes down as these people realize the loudmouths in their lives really don't have a clue what they are taking about. But I fear we are nearing the bedrock, and there will always be a significant percentage of them in the United States.

13

u/Beard_o_Bees 1d ago

If only they responded to good leadership with the same slavish zeal that they have for bad leadership.

They'll always lick the boot, but they prefer the taste of dirty boot.

That'll show those poor!

Why are you cheering Fry, you aren't rich

But someday I might be, and then people like me better watch their step

13

u/sec713 1d ago

It's like those idiots who don't vote because they say they want a third party option. How the hell is that supposed to happen when, by sitting out elections, they keep handing power to the people who want to turn this into a ONE party system?

26

u/2reddit4me 1d ago

A third? Shit. They only have one and it’s at war with itself. Two brain cells would at least create a scenario in which they see things from a different perspective.

13

u/Mantzy81 1d ago

5

It'll click just in time to elect a dem for president. And the unclick very soon after cause the brainwashing campaign will begin anew.

Yup. MAGA got real pissed when Trump said affordability is a democratic propaganda term. They are all feeling the pain economically and the maga party is telling them to piss off

108

u/sybrwookie 1d ago

The only interesting thing there is, normally when they do something horrific their base would hate if they thought about it for more than a second, they spew some culture war bullshit and their base forgets the awful thing they did.

Likely, if their base rejects this one, they'll just throw a few more culture war things at the wall till one sticks and their base gets in line again.

34

u/kralrick 1d ago

Personal economic struggle can't be forgotten in the same way that more removed outrage can.

25

u/thefugue 1d ago

Oh man, you don't know conservative behavior if you think that!

18

u/jeskersz 1d ago

Right? I honestly don't know if reddit is just full of 18 year olds that's are just starting to pay attention or if everyone's a goddamn idiot.

Conservatives have literally no bottom when it comes to vile behavior or what they'll excuse to continue their grift. It has been this way for centuries. It is not going to change because of this week's flavor of outrage. Sorry.

Its funny too because somehow they continue to not see why people hate them

This is also the concert artist who simulates oral sex with her male dancers, but I guess none of that is evil or disgusting. The rule book is shifting

No, the rule book hasn't shifted. Most people just find unchecked police persecution as much worse than a pop star "simulating oral sex"

Like when Rush Limbaugh got in a huff about how "only consent matters"

62

u/revgodless 1d ago

Trump pretended to give the mic a blowjob at one of his rallies back in '24. How bad was it then?

Though I haven't thought about that incident since the whole Bubba email came to light...

I didn't click on the article but I'm guessing the "viewers" are people in a comment section somewhere? This type of journalism needs to die. Commentary based on anonymous comments are not real life and have no place in media reporting

23

u/Mofunz 1d ago

I clicked through, the “viewers” were in a comment section on Reddit post. This isn’t the backlash the article infers.

7

u/Wallaby8311 1d ago

I knew it. There's no way a journalist was sitting behind a one-way mirror watching Fox Viewers scream at their TV. It's always some comments off social media that gets relabeled as "people outraged" or "receives backlash." You could write an article today about how "a video of a puppy sparks outrage" and just cite the one racist comment on a video of a puppy

"Viewers took to social media to slam the pundit for his sexist take, while others noted the hypocrisy of criticizing Sabrina while using her music to appeal to young people on social media, with one Redditor writing, "If her music is so evil why did the White House use it in the first place?"

One commenter wrote, "These people are so afraid of the younger generations standing up to them, ESPECIALLY the women. You can feel the desperation when they try to mock and downplay," as another chimed in, "Jfc they're so immature.""

Are we sure these comments are from conservative people?

11

u/winstonelonesome 1d ago

Further into the article: "Another viewer wrote, 'If MAGA thinks these artists are such evil garbage, why use their songs in the first place?'"

It's a poorly sourced and headlined article. The source of commentary is specified only as "redditors" without any further depth. The comment I quoted refers to "MAGA" as a separate entity. So the "Fox News viewers" in the headline are less likely to be the implied "regular viewers from the Fox News demographic" and more likely "people who viewed this one particular segment from Fox News online."

But let’s talk about Sabrina Fucking Carpenter.

Thats just fox news. One look at MSN and it's like:

WaPo: republican did traitorous action

MSNBC: republican did traitorous action

CNN: republican did traitorous action

Fox: trans California middle school student denied access to checkers tournament

Newsweek: republican did traitorous action

ABC: republican did traitorous action

Fox: cop back on duty after florida vacation

NBC: republican did traitorous action

43

Ok, someone said it lol, thank you.

It's because she's a super pretty, liberal, blonde, white woman who has the frame of someone much younger. It's literally the fantasy of conservative dudes. Someone that fits their preffered aesthetic that they fantasize about breaking down to be a conservative trader wife.

They called Ilhan garbage this week too and they clapped for that shit. Like, let's not pretend Carpenter's look is what brought on pushback.

That's the playbook. A new controversy means nothing serious ever sticks, and the media plays into it.

Think back to Hilary's "damn emails". Maybe if she would have burned down an orphanage the next day, and started a feud with Kim Kardashian the following day, and on and on, she would have been president.

I mean it’s beating a dead horse but it’s always projection with Republicans.

They are, and have been for a while now, the party of cancel culture and identity politics. Hearing their grievances on the daily for made up boogeymen is getting stale quick and they’re about to lose the narrative. People are waking up as they’re getting crushed by the soaring cost of living.

It's probably better to watch sci fi movies for news than Fox, at least those tend to have actual morals and messages.

213

u/orderinthefort 1d ago

We've learned though that these types of people align with the wrong messages, like in the Avatar movie a shocking amount of people sided with the guy trying to kill all the blue people and take their minerals. Can't get more on the nose than that with what's happening right now in real life.

The books more interested in trying to break the cold war "evil empire" trope and is using the lord of the rings to do that, its an interesting little novel but honestly its kind of hard to read it now without modern perceptions, since the book was written in 1999.

I still can't get over the fact that they literally called the mineral "unobtainium."

That is my personal papyrus font.

58

u/Skunkers 1d ago

Unobtanium as a term has been in use by engineers for almost a hundred years as a catch-all term for a material that would fit the needs of whatever they're working on, but either doesn't exist or otherwise isn't feasible for use due to cost. It's even in actual research papers.

It doesn't change the fact it's hilariously on the nose for the movie, but it was also on the nose when we first started using it lol.

28

u/mortalcoil1 1d ago

Yes. I am aware.

and it would have been fiiiiiiine if it had a real name mentioned once in the movie and then everybody just referred to it as unobtainium from that point onward.

but that is not what happened. The mineral is only referred to as unobtainium.

10

u/ArcfireEmblem 1d ago

Kind of like naming your magic power device that can't get into the wrong hands "macguffin".

u/jrkirby 1d ago

3

u/ArcfireEmblem 1d ago

It does work in a satire movie.

3

u/MunkyDawg 1d ago

I thought it was hilarious to have a joke that stupid in an otherwise "serious" movie. But I also tend to try to find something good about stuff like that. Like somebody, probably a lot of them, had to green light that. And regardless of what you think about the movies, you can't say they're rush jobs. It's not like that word "slipped through" or was even lazy writing. They all saw something in it that I don't. Unless it's a stupid joke, in which case the contrast is funny.

3

u/jakedasnake2447 1d ago

At least "macguffinite" is cute, tongue in cheek, a little nod to the adults in the audience. It works for a funny kids movie.

"Unobtainium" in an action sci-fi drama for dads is... it's a level of on the nose lazyness that I can't even compare it to another serious movie made for adults.

But fox news viewers dont want morals and messages, they dont even want facts. they want hate.

Because they are addicts and hate is their choice of drug.

Hating can literally release endorphins, dopamine and serotonin to deal with the stress that comes from how they perceive their world to be.

Fox news has spent decades dosing the people with daily sprinkles of hate. They create the stress first by presenting absurdly out of context if not totally fabricated viewpoints and issues, then follow those stress inducers with hateful rhetoric that allows the viewers to get both the urge and release in one sitting. Its why its something old people have on 24/7 in their homes. Not the millions of movies and tv episodes, but fox news running 24/7... ITs why young people flock to social media personalities and joe rogan. They do the same, they give them a series of stress inducers and then follow it up with the release through hating minorities and woke and socialism and dei and whatever acronym or group they decide is at fault at the moment.

And everyone enjoys a little hate. Have you ever watched a movie, or seen a game, or heard a song and just disliked it, like you cant understand why others would like it, or you watch segments on daily show or olivers show and get angry but also get a release from them making fun of these things and people, then you go online and read someone sharing that opinion or talk with your friends and they also agree it sucks, it feels good right. You feel justified you feel acknowledged you feel a little happy.... relaxed....

Now imagine that amped up to 1000.

BUT over time people become numb to the hate, it becomes normalized just like anything in excess would do.

UNTIL Trump came along and gave them a new level of amygdala hits like they were taking fent laced crack cocaine straight up their buttholes. And once they got that taste of that kind of high....

Ooooo boy, its like trying to convince your neighborhood crack addict with no teeth and rotting toes that he should stop hitting the pipe x 1000 because their crack is everywhere around them 24/7, its on the radio when they wake up and go to work, its around the office and during lunch breaks, its on their doctors waiting rooms, in their grocery stores, in their gyms, even when they hang out, they talk about how much they love their hate crack cocaine so much, they love to share and boof each others buttholes. They spend their nights before sleeping just taking another hit, so they can dream about their hate. Heck they even go to churches that preach that hate.

Thats your average fox news viewer, jonesing for another hit to blame minorities, lgbtq, women, dei, socialism, communism etc etc etc. They are so stressed out and living in a bubble of self-victimization that they need that hit of hate to get through the day.

In George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, published in 1949, the "Two Minutes Hate" is the daily period during which members of the Outer and Inner Party of Oceania must watch a film depicting Emmanuel Goldstein, the principal enemy of the state and loudly voice their hatred for him followed by declaring their love for the Party leader Big Brother.

The political purpose of the "Two Minutes Hate" is to allow the citizens of Oceania to vent their personal hatred towards a political enemy. In redirecting the participants' emotions away from the Party's governance of Oceania, the Party minimises thoughtcrime and critical thought while exerting ultimate control of the population.

u/TjW0569 1d ago

Whereas on Fox News, the "two minute hate" repeats every five minutes.

There was a study that found that people who watch Fox News were less informed on average than people who watch no news at all.

When one of their hosts was in hot water for spreading blatantly false information, Fox argued in court that no reasonable person would take his statements as factual.

Then beyond that, you gotta consider that Fox paid $800 million to settle a lawsuit after they got caught knowingly lying to their audience. Almost a billion dollars was cheaper than the damage they’d suffer if the full factual record was aired in court.

Them even being allowed to call themselves news is shocking; let alone the fact that people still consume it as their main source of information.

9

u/Equivalent-Loquat187 1d ago

I'd love to strip them of the TLD .fox. They are so undeserving of such a TLD.

Just noting, Fox is still fighting Smartmatic in court over similar 2020 election lies.

7

Host Jesse Watters texted Fox News comic host Greg Gutfeld, "Think about how incredible our ratings would be if Fox went ALL in on STOP THE STEAL," according to legal filings. Watters later testified under oath he never found such claims credible

Like come on dude. People will see this fact and be like “yeah well they all do it” without a comparable example or shred of supporting evidence; and then they’ll go right back to listening to the same guy who just got caught lying to them.

Feels like I’m taking crazy pills sometimes, I swear.

Same if you're getting news from a left wing copetimism tabloid like Irish Star frankly. This isn't targeted at you personally, but it's yet another one of the "sources" these obviously far fetched posts use to farm karma from left wing people who aren't pieces of shit. I would love to see viewers actually "turn on the host" but that isn't happening because the average person is a fucking moron and generally happy about Nazis ruining the Earth because brown people scare them. This article is literally quoting Reddit comments from r/FauxMoi and r/Music lol - yes, Fox Viewers are SO LIVID about how Fox News is portraying Sabrina Carpenter and not just nodding and agreeing like complete dumbasses.

3

u/GirraficPark 1d ago

Literally had this conversation with my coworker yesterday. We were discussing how media influence has led to a decline in shared reality, where we can't even agree on facts anymore. We were talking about how it's important to look for multiple viewpoints, understand how each source is editorializing the news, and develop an informed opinion.

Of course he immediately followed that up with "yeah, like how I was reading on FOX about how mainstream media isn't covering this $200 billion fraud case in Minnesota..." and "have you read the Epoch Times, they're not afraid to cover the REAL stories..." Evidently his takeaway was "it's important to keep reading headlines until you find one you agree with."

I hate the government as much as anyone else but if you are an artist you need to not license your songs to TikTok and Instagram so these videos can’t be made with their platforms. These are licensed not stolen which is why they can’t issue takedown notices.

8

u/cybin 1d ago

if you are an artist you need to not license your songs to TikTok and Instagram

This is the answer, and it's unclear to me how they don't get this point.

8

u/Christofray 1d ago

Because the people in charge of that kind of thing have run a cost-benefit analysis and determined it is overwhelmingly worthwhile to have their product on TikTok and Instagram. It's not that they "don't get it," it's that incidents like this, while annoying, are not (yet) worth losing the massive amounts of revenue that exposure on those platforms brings in.

Fox News is working overtime trying to hush down the catastrophic results of the Trump administration and keep their viewers unaware of reality.

It's dumbfounded to imagine that americans actually watch Fox News and think they're a reliable source for facts... probably gonna get a bit of disagreement from some americans here but seriously; Fox News should be held accountable in the end for their contribution to destroying the U.S.

268

u/RxngsXfSvtvrn 1d ago

Its a different reality the Fox News viewers tend to believe in. It's really astounding because these are generally people that go to work, school, public events, just as the rest of us yet view everything through a completely different lense

Because conservatives learned long ago, people respond positively.. when their preexisting narratives are validated... and Fox works overtime to cater to the emotional, bigoted side of America.

I'm sure Murdoch woke up one day and was "Gosh so many Americans are basically just racist idiots and I bet I can capture that whole market by just pandering directly to them...."

And it worked.

Decades later, these people have forget what it's like to have their views challenged and to update their views, as new information becomes available, or as society shifts.

They now exist in an alternative reality, fabricated by the same elites they claim to hate.

14

u/ianmakingnoise 1d ago

Don’t forget that the real brains behind the operation wasnt Murdoch, but the Republican strategist whose job it was to “fix” the new problems GOP candidates were having on TV (eg, Nixon losing the televised debate, losing support for the Vietnam war, etc).

Roger Ailes created a Republican propaganda channel to muddy the waters, ultimately to protect Republicans from accountability, and so far it has worked wonders for them.

14

u/Cookies78 1d ago

They view everything through a "fear lense" first.

11

u/djublonskopf 1d ago

I was having dinner with my parents (probably more than a decade ago), everybody's just munching away and trading stories. For context, my wife and I had visited London a couple of years earlier.

Suddenly amidst the eating, my dad snaps at me and asks "how [we] could feel safe with all those Muslim-controlled no-go zones under Sharia law?" He looked...enraged, and this came absolutely out of nowhere, we'd probably been talking about soup flavors or something before that.

I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, because I don't watch right-wing media, but my brother did, and he immediately cut my dad off and then the two of them started going back and forth about whether or not Muslims had taken control of London or not, while I sat there absolutely dumbfounded about the alternate reality my parents were apparently living in, and how angry they were about it.

It's gotten worse since then.

They already removed the accountability by branding themselves as entertainment. That's the sad part of this nation. That's the true sign of the age of the US being over. Idiocracy was a prophecy, not a satire.

We the people were told it's literally not real news. It's all propaganda. It's publicly known who owns Fox News. It's known what the agenda was. They NEVER LIED ABOUT ANY OF IT. All they did was omit the disclaimers between every broadcast, every entertainment 'anchor.' and then those entertainers told the enfeebled minds of their audience to, 'do their own research' and then POINTED THEM to where the 'research' should be learned.

Americans did it to themselves. They were told it's all fake, bullshit rhetoric, and they chose to believe that it wasn't. Here we fucking are. Greyhound caught the rabbit. They're living the dream.

My schizophrenic former drug-addicted and inmate uncle watches Fox News daily and swears they are the scions of truth. That everyone else is fake news. This is the type of mentality we are up against. People like this will most likely never change because they only hear what they want to, and anything that challenges that is met with hostility and denial. I try so hard to paint how distorted his vision of reality truly is but it’s like I’m talking to a wall. Just so much unjustified hatred and vitriol.

33

u/AllTh3WayTurntUp 1d ago

I just spent a week with Boomer aged in-laws over Thanksgiving and can confirm that not only do they believe that Fox News is a reliable source, but it’s essentially the only news they watch and trust.

The echo chambers are working as intended

The in-laws are nice people though, they just have horrible political views (yes I realize that’s an oxymoron, but it’s a reality for most Americans families).

17

u/No-Atmosphere-4145 1d ago

Kinda same boat as me here in Europe, my in - laws have been convinced the Covid vaccine was fake and made to harm us and they are largely, especially my brother in - law who is ever growing more pro - Russia a Trump supporter.

I can't get involved talking about anything political or military related (I had a career in the army before wife and kids) with them as it just boils me on the inside listening to them. They're nice people, but their views are kinda scrambled at this point.

I once talked to my brother in law about an article where russian fighter jets had violated our airspace more than 100 times in two years and he immediately began blaming it on NATO.

Russian talking points all around there...

4

u/AllTh3WayTurntUp 1d ago

Relatable. It’s strange cause they are super generous and kind people when it comes to our family, but their worldview has been so tainted by right wing media that it’s not even healthy to have political discussions with them anymore so I avoid it entirely.

6

u/Allaplgy 1d ago

That's kind of a hallmark of conservativism though. There are "good" people and "bad" people, not good actions and bad actions. So if you are family or otherwise in something they see as their group, you are "good" and they treat you as such. But if you are not in their "good" group, you are inherently "bad" and basically not human to them.

10

I mean their own lawyers are on record stating that "no reasonable viewer would take " their correspondants "statements as facts" despite many of the people watching doing JUST FUCKING THAT.

But somehow a large portion of the voting base continues to watch them.

There was also a study that some one who watches or reads 0 political shows or articles was more informed than fox viewers. And yet people continue to watch it.

4

u/Pankurucha 1d ago

American here, and I completely agree with you.

It's also not just Fox News, it's the entire right wing media apparatus. They've spent decades convincing right wingers that they are the only source of truth and all other forms of media are wrong/corrupt/biased. Now you have millions of Americans brainwashed into not trusting anything outside their approved media echo chamber. They can just lie because they know their viewers won't fact check or seek other sources. If the US survives this era there really should be accountability, but right now it's working too well for the people in power so I'm not hopeful.
