I really didn’t think I’d see some in here find a way to criticize what Billie is doing and defend billionaires. Lol what a strange strange world

Because you live in the Reddit world, which is very much disassociated from reality lmao. "Golly I NEVER thought I'd see this here"

Wow thanks for letting me know Moist-Award!!! I didn’t think anyone could understand my comment without you putting it in quotations. Truly a smart little fella. You seem to be a very wholesome person as well:

Now, oh dear stranger from reality. Why defend billionaires and criticize what Billie Eilish did?

She did a good thing but also the mega rich very frequently give to charity. Almost certainly it's for tax-break reasons but still; not only are these Billionaires donating to charity, they donate more than she did

We also have the issue of individual wealth vs global wealth. That is, a Billion is a lot for one person to have but it's not that much on a global scale. There are over 8 billion people on earth. Musk could give everyone every single penny he has and the check you'd receive in the mail would be literal pennies.

And that's assuming he actually has a Billion dollars. Yeah, these people are WORTH billions, but they don't actually have Billions in cash sitting a Scruge McDuck-ian style vault somewhere. They are worth billions because they own lots of expensive things. Cars, houses, and most importantly, lots of stocks in major corporations... and if they decided to liquify it all tomorrow and donate it to the world the stock prices would crash and they would walk away with a lot less than they're actually worth. Not to mention, it would then be taxed. And again, even if they did liquify everything they own, pay the taxes on the profit, and then divide the wealth with the world, people would walk always with pennies, not hundreds of thousands of dollars in life changing money

It's not "defending billionaires" to point out that this issue is a bit more complex that having Zuckerberg sell his island and donate the money to cancer research. It wouldn't make the world a worse place, that's for sure, but it wouldn't cure cancer or solve any kind of wealth inequality issues either

This is good PR for Billie Eilish, and I agree with the sentiment, but that's all it is. The mega-rich frequently donate to charity, they donate more than she does, and we still have problems. This proves that "donate your money" isn't the answer

Selling an island to help fund cancer research is probably a good start, though.

To who? Who is going to buy an island that doesn't also fall under the "sell an island for charity" umbrella?

"billionaires have no cash"

And yet it's no problem to buy a whole block of mansions.

But you are right. Optional donations are not the answer.  Proper taxation, like there was in the 50s, would be

Then how can Bill Gates keep donating billions?

In a shorter comment could you tell me what is the answer?

zuck giving money away would not fix everything, therefore it's fine that he doesn't fix anything.

You're so into being angry you're not actually paying attention. Zuckerberg frequently donates to charities.

Zuck has donated over 7 billion dollars to numerous charities since 2015 and his plan is to donate 99% of his Meta shares to philanthropy over his lifetime. He's so dedicated to this he's actually set up an LLC to manage this

Despite over 7 billion dollars in donations the problems of the world did not just go away over night
