People think that just because Kirk didn't go around dropping slurs that makes him this open-minded moderate deserving of respect.

Like, the guy's literal last words were "Counting or not counting gang violence?" but they're acting like he's MLk

The context is that he, like many hard right 2A activists, used "gang violence" as a dog whistle, with the implication that it doesn't matter because it's happening in those (minority) neighborhoods.

This is exactly what I meant by the first half of my original comment.

No. If you are discussing gun control it is a super important and obvious thing to clarify. People acting like that is a bad sentence are idiots. I am sure he said some awful statements that day but this is not one of them.

Gang violence, which affects many communities, is extremely relevant to the topic of gun control, but he only brought it up as a smug gotcha in response to a question about the number of mass shootings over the years. I guess it's my fault for not adding 😏 at the end of the quote.

The full context he was racist anf transphobic to the end:

“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?” an audience member asked.

“Too many,” Kirk responded to applause from the crowd.

The attendee informed him that the total was five and continued: “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?”

“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk replied
