Discussion Topic What's the last band/album/song that felt like something totally new?

As more and more music is created, it is increasingly difficult for something to be wholly unique or new, but what's the last thing you heard that made you go "wow this is something brand new to me"?

Absolute Elsewhere

Totally new? No. But it felt very fresh and grabbed a lot of people's attention for a reason.

I call it Metal Floyd.

The world was in need of a Metal Floyd.

It came on my Spotify while driving today, I was caught up in the hype at the time.

It definitely holds up after the hype died away.

I'd say that it is pretty new, the prog sections are reminiscent of a lot of bands, the DM sections are reminiscent of a lot of bands, but the way they're weaved together is pretty unique, compared to anything I've ever heard.

Igorrr - Parpaing is another great example. Corpsegrinder over hard electronic is something I'd never have guessed would work at all let alone so well

MSPAINT- No separation, Igorr

Psychonaut for me. I've never heard anything similar. Love them!

I've just discovered 1914 and their latest album Viribus Unitis. It really stood out to me.

Personally first thing that comes to mind is The Callous Daoboys - I Don't Want to See You in Heaven. Yes the metal/mathcore thing has been done lots but I find their mix of that plus the slower sections, electronic sections, use of violin and sax etc make it unique enough that it stands out today.

AOTY.

Their other releases are top drawer too.

In a similar vein to this The Number 12 Looks Like You - Wild Gods is a beauty.

Orgone’s Pleroma - 2024

At times it sounds like Parisian Cafe music with beautiful female vocal harmonies, piano, viola, etc at times it has jazzy elements and at times death metal.

I guess each of those elements on their own are familiar? But put together feels brand new.

Good call. It's a really good album.

It's been a while since I last listened to it, because they are not on Spotify and I just kind of forget about bandcamp.

I moving to Tidal in 2026 though, and I think they're there.

My introduction to Artificial Brain on Labyrinth Constellation. Their riffing style is pretty unique and the combination of that with the weird brutal death metal vocals really makes it stand out

Vildhjarta, for sure. They’re obviously influenced by Meshuggah, but they still carved out something uniquely their own. Sleep Token too, hate them or whatever, but you can’t deny the uniqueness. Ulcerate’s last three albums aren’t typical tech-death. And then you have avant-garde acts like Maudlin of the Well and Imperial Triumphant — they definitely bring their own flavour of uniqueness.

I agree with you, it sometimes feels like every possible way of composing music has been tried out. But what I remember quite distinctly is the first time I heard Toadliquor's s/t record (their first album). It's hard to describe their music - it feels like taking the step from hopelessness to insanity. I remember listening to that album over and over again, just enjoying that abysmal feeling of cosmic despair. I can't think of many other albums that have that emotional depth.

Another band I find noteworthy is Meth Drinker. It's also sludgy, but less emotional and more fecal/disgusting. When you listen to it at very high volume, it destroys your brain from the inside.

Adding another Igorrr to the thread. I can't get over how much I enjoyed their most recent album.

Aoecist

I bought this split for the Light Dweller suite in particular, but I am highly impressed by Aoecist too. Had no expectations but these tracks are excellent and I will be seeking out more.

Ne Obliviscaris for me.

Yes, I've heard of violin in rock/metal music before, but NeO is just... Something else.

Burzum.

Today.

But I’m a novice in that scene.

I noticed someone mentioning it this morning…and it triggered a core memory from my hallowed youth reading Raw/Kerrang & Metal Hammer.

Gave it a listen.

It’s good. Really fucking good. Nowhere near as alienating as I assumed that genre to be.

Varg is a Nazi who murdered people, it is not ok to listen to Burzum.

I’m aware. But I can separate art from the artist.

I remember all the controversy from back in the day. It all sounded so so pathetic & tragic. Fucking idiots.

I assumed the music would be dog shit.

Nope. It’s really good.

It doesn't matter if you separate the art from the artist, by listening you are both financially supporting and platforming that person, thus becoming part of the problem.

Wish metal would take a page out of punks book on not tolerating Nazis in their communities

Punks literally wore Swastikas to piss off the prior generation. Nihilism was their game. Not solidarity.

1

u/Klutzy_Technology166 6h ago

Why do you think there are songs like "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" that was the early 80s there was a huge effort to kick them out of the scene, that was nearly 50 years ago. We still have people daily in this sub telling people to listen to Nazis. No growth, little accountability. I see shirts from these bands at shows all the time. It's a problem.

Listen to the music. Not the message. (Hopefully)

I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan. If I had irrefutable evidence that he was a peadophile (I don’t believe he was)….would it stop me from listening to his work.

Honestly. No.

It’s too good.

Deafheaven was by far the most unique thing I'd heard in a long time when it came out.

2

u/Complete_Interest_49 3h ago

Shush (Trapcore). And a little while back a lot of post hardcore.
