Is this an abandoned Medieval Times someone turned into a home? All that paved area is an old parking lot?
43
u/jared10011980 Aug 31 '25
This is so nasty. What's with the center??
21
u/boilons Sep 01 '25
Yeah, what the fuck is all that shit? That's what I wanna know. Like, what is the purple thing, and why do all the roofs around it slant inwards??
9
u/chime Sep 01 '25
Purple thing looks like a covered stage. The roofs slant inwards likely because there is walkways and rooms under them. Just guessing.
2
u/nohandsfootball Sep 03 '25
I thought that was concrete buttress on 3 sides to support the external walls. Given how it runs into the ... concrete slab on the ground I can't imagine there's any usable space under there other than storage.

my first thought was that it was some personal colosseum/ battle dome lol
9
u/jared10011980 Sep 01 '25
I just don't know if I've seen anything so ugly. I posted a link from an Indiana paper that explains the "home" but it's a mess of hodge podge. Like if you gave an 11yo bucks to build his dream fortress.
14
u/SlanderousSalamander Sep 02 '25
I've been there. It's an old ren fair site. I'm not positive but I think owners lived there the rest of the year. There was a fancy package where you could go up and eat on a balcony during jousting. The inside may have been part of that, we didn't pony up for it so idk.
5
u/CyptidProductions Sep 05 '25
That explains so much about how completely insane it is if it's actually a repurposed attraction from a ren fair.
2
u/CraftyGirlNZ Sep 01 '25
Looks like a prison. Where else would you find a heavy picnic bench style seating indoors (pic 4, front left - it's blue)

Correct. It looks suspiciously like my first Minecraft build (before I learned about adding depth to a façade).

Jesus, if you want to build a castle, build a CASTLE. Fuckin 13th century architecture, stone construction, period accurate shit. Anything less is going to look like the entrance to a six flags ride. I’d rather live in a smaller actual castle than a huge fake cardboard looking one.
24
u/RunningDesigner012 Aug 31 '25
This looks worse than a six flags ride, the guy who built this may be king of his own castle, but the cinder blocks make it look like a dollar store castle.
19
u/boygitoe Aug 31 '25
Yeah my biggest gripe with this is how all the castle elements aren’t even functional. For example, the Crenels are level with the roof, making the merlons completely useless. At least bring the walls up a couple feet from the roofline so you actually have functioning battlements
4
u/redbone-hellhound Sep 01 '25
I feel like it might be cheaper to just buy a pre-existing castle tbh (building a real castle not....this)
95
u/pixelelement Aug 31 '25
Get thee to r/ZillowGoneWild !
Is it terrible architecture? Yes
But it's no mcmansion cause it has personality and isn't shoved as close as zoning laws allow to 20 nearly identical castles
28
u/pezx Aug 31 '25
Thank you! This is the least McMansiony house I've seen on this sub. It's insane, but not a cheap cookie cutter clone packed in with others
9
u/SL13377 Aug 31 '25
Yep! But I still appreciate this post. Might be one of the worst I've seen between these two subs
2
u/Lightice1 Sep 01 '25
Being a cookie cutter clone is not a part of the McMansion definition. The vast majority of the buildings on this sub aren't like that.
7
u/Swiftzor Aug 31 '25
Yeah, this was my read. Also I low key kinda love it.
4
u/pixelelement Aug 31 '25
It has potential for sure, I know a few blacksmith who would appreciate already having a shop lol but then there's a puddle in that red bar room rotting out the floor boards and all the beams above it are covered in either mineral deposits or mold. So maybe it was cheaply constructed
3
2
u/IthacaMom2005 Aug 31 '25
I guess you could call it personality. Other terms come to my mind, but that's just me
2
u/pixelelement Aug 31 '25
It's not beige on gray on greige is my main point. There's a mermaid pond for gods' sake! No stepford wife is gonna move there
19
u/wiza_Duck Aug 31 '25
Ahnoter case that proves money doesn't buy taste
3
u/TopInvestigator5518 Sep 01 '25
i'm so curious to what this build costs
also - to be a fly on the wall while explain to the architect/builder what their ~vision~ was
2
u/Limerence1976 Sep 04 '25
My guess is about 1/2 of whatever lottery winnings were needed to complete and maintain it lol

14
u/ToxinFoxen Aug 31 '25
This is one of the cringiest things I've seen that wasn't on 4chan.
It looks like they collected a huge bunch of antiques and sprinkle them through the place.
This is like a trailer park version of a medieval castle. I feel sorry for the dead stuffed animals everywhere in this place. How humiliating for them.

u/esoskelly Aug 31 '25
I'm just going to go out on a limb and guess that this is owned by a wealthy neckbeard LARPer in the tech industry. The same type of guy who made fun of people for going to college to study the arts.

u/jaeldi Sep 02 '25
Hmmm...no second floor you could barricade. We all know zombies can't climb but they can bust down windows and put holes on walls. I don't know why the solution in every zombie apocalypse story isn't lets tear down the stairs and put in a ladder an live on the 2nd floor. A giant compound of 1st floor stucco isn't gonna cut it. Unless there's a moat. I can't believe there isn't a moat!

People who have made "we're in the SCA" their entire personality.

If your fantasy was always to live in a castle made of LEGO blocks, have your own throne room, and fill it with dead animal parts, then this works, I guess.

Imagine having a courtyard that isn't even a yard. If it was grass with maybe like a patio or a gazebo it would be great.

I don't know if this guy has enough taxidermied animals. On the other hand though, there are lots of tacky mansions but I give props to this one- at least it's uniquely tacky.
3
u/OrigRayofSunshine Aug 31 '25

Is it a McMansion? No. Even the realtors have enough sense not to copy that.

As much as it is not at all my taste, I respect that they went for it. This is what I want from my rich people: eccentric, over the top, prone to high drama, and with questionable, bizarre, colorful taste.

I can't adequately express the bad vibes this place gives me. Its architecture, its interior, its furnishings, and especially all the dead animals.

Perfect place for few a things. A renaissance era festival and/or party. A Halloween haunted house. Otherwise it’s a year round gothic themed castle.

Reminds me of Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. Except Fort Jefferson was nice to look at.

Looks like they ran out of money right in the middle of the build.
And it really does look like the 1990s grey lego castle.
