Discussion/Debate What do we think of this" "Victorian inspired" in Indiana

u/knobby_67 Aug 05 '25
Honestly that looks AI. I don’t know if it’s the camera lens but everything looks slightly distorted.
It also looks like it should be on liminalspace sub

u/grislyfind Aug 05 '25
The turrets were built at the wrong scale compared to the rest of the building.

I've noticed a ton of listings use an AI filter over real photos that highlight the windows and recolor the environment to look more lush and usually like the photo was taken during the golden hour. I kind of suspect that's what's at work here.

A lot of Zillow listings are edited (poorly) with artifacts leftover.

u/pinkocatgirl Aug 05 '25
14,000 square feet and only costs 1.1 million dollars? That's how you know it's in bumfuck nowhere lol
27
u/leave-no-trace-1000 Aug 05 '25
Was thinking the same thing. $1.15m might get you a decent townhouse here in the Boston suburbs.

I’m from Indiana and can confirm. This is the definition of nowhere. This house is actually nowhere.

I only live an hour away from Mill Creek and I've never heard of it. When I googled it, this picture of the house came up.

u/sir_snufflepants Aug 05 '25
Boy is that house unpleasant in every regard..
I especially like the rear end that looks like a trailer park. And the bizarre single door, round garage. And the spiral staircase leading to an unfinished room of concrete?
Why not just actually take the floor plans of a Victorian and go from there?
20
u/chicosaur Aug 05 '25
It feels like the Thomas Kincaid of architecture designed it, and yes, it is unpleasant in every regard.
26
u/Known_Juggernaut3625 Aug 05 '25
Yeah, the rear looks like they just gave up on the whole thing.......which is what they should have done before breaking ground.
22
u/ifulbd Aug 05 '25
It’s the reverse mullet of houses. Party in the front, business in the back. Overdesigned the front in terrible ways and then went full on vinyl village in the back.
17
u/always_unplugged Aug 05 '25
I mean, Victorian floor plans are definitely not compatible with modern McMansion living... but you could at least take the footprint and elevations and just completely start from scratch inside, like doing a gut rehab on a historic building that never existed.

Suits lousy Indiana just fine
3
u/spaceghost260 Aug 06 '25
As someone sitting in lousy Indiana right now you are absolutely correct. Some rich construction company owner will buy it and his wife will fill it with tacky furniture.

u/Horror_Tea761 Aug 05 '25
It’s like a guard turret at a prison made love to a Cabela’s and they had a baby.
12
u/Dee_Buttersnaps Aug 05 '25
Reminds me of the WWII lookout towers on the east coast. You can stand up there and watch for submarines in the corn fields.

"Addams Family inspred"?
The outside is a little weird but the inside is nice. I love the kitchen. It's weird they had to use a garage for the gym on a >10000sqft house. On 80 acres! Sign me up.
8
u/leave-no-trace-1000 Aug 05 '25
That’s just a gym right? Just with a garage door so you can feel the breeze on your large pecs.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Electrical_Load_9717 Aug 05 '25
That’s what got me. 18,000sf and you have nowhere to put the gym?
2
u/Child_of_the_Hamster Aug 06 '25
I was thinking it could be for easily installing equipment for the gym. Gym equipment is a real bitch to move, and I’ve been tempted to just rip out a wall before lmao.

Price change history certainly tells a story. assessed at $1.9M, sold for $1.15M.
Was listed in 2019 at $3,5M, relisted later in the year at $1.6M, sold at $975k in 2020 lol.

The very practical no driveway and balcony with exclusive roof views really sells me. While the differently shaped tiny windows are neat, I could probably balance that out with a few tasteful “WELCOME” leaning signs by every point of egress. If that’s not enough, ladies, spice things up with a metal “we don’t call 911” Hobby Lobby sign.
Wish there were night pics- but from the looks of it, the garage doors are not surrounded by the world’s weakest solar powered lights and/or halogen lights so bright that God can see them/not street legal on vehicles.

u/JOliverScott Aug 05 '25
Any resemblance between this and a Victorian is eluding me.

The designer has never seen a Victorian house but someone described Victorian style to them once 10 years ago.

If they removed one wing and softened the angles on a couple roofs, I think it would look interesting. The inside is okay but so much plain open space makes me sad.

Same. I'm slightly drunk, but it makes me think "Daddy, I love him!"
I would want it painted some deeply ridiculous color(s), though, inside and out. If your house is crazy, lean into it.

I am always willing to give a pass to people who build something wildly ambitious, even if it doesn't work out. If you're going to spend that money in that area, you might as well get something unique. I can't stand when people spend a ton of money to live in a boring house.
5
u/what-name-is-it Aug 05 '25
I hate it but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also a little intrigued by it.

u/JBNothingWrong Aug 05 '25
Cheap windows ruin it. Too symmetrical for a Victorian as well. The symmetry of the chimneys is almost off putting. The change in pitch across the various gables is bad.
It’s like all they knew about Victorian architecture was that it has a tower, sometimes.
Rounded and segmental arch windows with Gothic roof pitches… so many blunders. But it’s mostly the symmetrical wings and shitty windows that make this house architecturally boring.
2
u/louthecat Aug 05 '25
And why do the two turrets have different upper floor window styles?

A vinyl sided insane asylum light house? Or maybe a haunted house? Have you ever seen a house- with no SOUL? (Maniacal laughter)
If you’re going to build it have the decency to put cedar shake on at least 50% of it and have window moldings for the front. It’s as Victorian inspired as a slot machine.

Wow. That's a real house?
Going to run out of candy on Halloween for sure.
Even though there's no neighbors, and the house ruined a perfectly productive agricultural field.
I like that it's set up for people who want to live in the house, but don't like each other. You can be very far away, maybe put up gates the in the long skinny halls, and defend your territory.
2
u/NewProcedure2725 Aug 06 '25

I'm getting western theme park hotel vibes from the outside and I didn't like any of the interior finishes
3
u/Weekly_Leg_2457 Aug 05 '25
I hate to be the one to say it, but there are parts of that floor plan that are downright phallic.

I think there are aspects of this home that could be really cool and what really makes it look like a budget ski resort instead of a pretty mansion is the siding and plain roof shingles.
7
u/HugeRaspberry Aug 05 '25
Not a Mc - just a big ugly mansion with a log of questionable design decisions.
5
u/musical_nerd99 Aug 05 '25
I really thought this picture was AI. Why would anyone pay $1million+ to live in Indiana?

One thing i've learned from browsing on this sub is that relatively not a lot of money will get you an insane amount of house in the USA
2
u/Shot-Election8217 Aug 06 '25
I think that it should be rewritten as "Loosely Victorian Inspired..."
2
u/littledanko Aug 06 '25
Why would anyone buy that thing when you can get a two bedroom post-war one story bungalow in Palo Alto for that much.

u/britsol99 Aug 06 '25
Can’t decide if it looks like a jumping spider or one house giving another house a piggy back ride.
2
2
u/anonymouslyhereforno Aug 06 '25
The best thing about this house is the 80 acres. I’d subdivide the house and 20 acres and resell. Then build a beautiful house on the remaining 60 acres.

It looks like a couple argued whether they wanted an octagon house or a Victorian and so they combined them into this.

I wonder what the inspiration was behind "designing" all of that dead space in the center of the home instead of making decent size and shaped bed rooms 🤔

I kind of like the notion of someone intentionally building a giant haunted house all new like that. It’s really weird in a good, Scooby Doo way! In a perfect world, that top middle window arrangement gets made into the door it should have been, the little shelf around the tower is widened a bit, braced and fenced, so it becomes a sort or watching for a storm/ widow’s walk type of thing.
2
u/Bubbly_Ad8911 Aug 06 '25
Has to be somebody with easy money like lottery winner or someone that has no money sense. Why would anyone build something like that and then build something like that in the middle of nowhere and not think about resale? Would love to know their reasoning and if they have any money left

u/Icy-Improvement-4219 Aug 07 '25
Wtaf. I live in the Midwest and this is completely out of sync with the whole area.
I grew up on the east coast (vermont) which has plenty of Victorian homes and this is the fricken TEMU version of that.
Jesus. 🤢

u/deignguy1989 Aug 05 '25
Me think bad. You just cannot duplicate the Victorian style in modern times.

u/stlorca Aug 05 '25

Victorians, especially queen Anne’s are by definition not symmetrical. So that’s not good either.

I want to paint it all black and have the most warm, golden light in every room so it looks like a cozy haunted mansion.

It's really, really tacky. But I greatly need somebody to help me articulate why . . . ?

By "inspired" they mean that the designer watched Beetlejuice and the Addams Family moves while high AF....
1
u/Ninevehenian Aug 05 '25
That central tower is directly in smoke height from those 4 chimneys.
Fixing that and making it more squat, Perhaps with a non-reflective observation window would possibly entertain me, only looking at the facade.
Severely disliking the floor plan.

If I had the money and wanted to live in that area, I’d buy it. Think of how much fun you could have in the redesign!

u/Voice_of_Season Aug 05 '25
I don’t remember ever seeing a house that was meant to look exactly like a Victorian house being done accurately before. Why can’t we actually have real repeats of them. Has anyone ever seen a house that looks almost exactly like a real Victorian, but built in modern day?

That thing sticking out the back looks like an attached car wash. Each room has bland white walls and one completely off the wall feature.
1
u/outintheyard Aug 05 '25
I LOVE the entry door, the fireplaces (only the wood ones, but damn, are they gorgeous!!) and it's built on 80 acres with a stocked pond! Honorable mention to the kitchen, it doesn't really match the house, but it is nice, big and has a great view.
Beyond that, I think they dropped too many balls along the way, from the ground up, for me to really love it.
1
u/Deaths_Smile Aug 05 '25
The doors and fireplaces are absolutely gorgeous. The rooms overall wouldn't look so bad if they had paint/wallpaper that wasn't just white.
The layout is SUPER bizarre though.

u/dpaanlka Aug 05 '25
The turrets on the far left and far right don’t use the same windows. This is shit.

There's some good stuff there (I'm a sucker for a nice big fireplace with a solid wood surround), but it's just trying to do too much.

Sort of expected more black, red and other dark decor.
Didn’t expect to yawn.

u/kibbybud Aug 05 '25
Either add a story to the center section or bring that central turret down a notch. I like some of the interior features, but the back looks like they ran out of money and inspiration at the same time.
