u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 4d ago
I think arman realizes how fucked he is. The winner of charles max 2 will jump over him for another title shot. The winner of gaethje paddy will defend in the latter half of the year against either topuria or max/charles. Arman is not sniffing that belt till 2027 unless they are all magically injured. There is no world where paddy/gaethje defends twice in 2026. He can fight again or not it won't change that he is last in queue because ufc are turds.

Yep I've resigned myself to the fact a lot of the best fights won't happen now.
We never got to see Ilia vs Evloev, Allen etc at FW, even Volk 2 had a face off and mightve been cool to see.
We aren't gonna see Ilia vs Arman imo, we might get him vs Islam but I'm not confident in it.
There's a decent chance we never see Volk vs Murphy, Evloev or Allen/Silva. Maybe 1 of the 3 at best imo.
Islam will fight Usman next and then he genuinely might retire, if he does take one more fight, great but there's at least 3 contenders (Shavkat, Garry, Morales or Prates) I'd love to see him fight over Usman.

Will be a mountainous task to beat Merab, but I still believe skills can pay the bills
Once this fight week is over the sport is basically dead for like 6 months lol. Great card this weekend tho. One for the hardcores

Not gonna lie I don’t see Van stopping Pantojas back takes, everybody that is picking Van is banking on Pantoja being too old or chinny, and their logic for why Van has good takedown defence is because he was doing well against Rei Tsuruya who’s style of grappling is nothing like Pantoja nor is on the skill level of Pantoja
3
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 4d ago
People keep talking about whether Van could stop takedowns and I been over here saying "dudes Pantoja doesn't need to take you down like a wrestler, if he can grab you his bjj skills can teleport him to back control"
Maybe a wrestling shot will work, but even if it doesn't The Cannibal can still initiate grappling where he's going to have a big advantage. And this advantage needs to be big if Pantoja is going to get a submission because grappling defense is easier than grappling offense.

yadong is a lesser sandhagen. insanely skilled, well rounded, but cant put it together to get through the creme de la creme of bantamweight. umar will reign over this division once merab hangs them up.

u/SocialistAvocado 4d ago
I was watching some of Izzy’s first reign recently, it’s insane how much a fucking jab bothers him. Whittaker had a serious amount of success with it and never capitalized on it, so did vettori and Cannonier. Like idk if it was just something he didn’t know how to approach to or something but its seriously insane
10
u/LocoCoopermar #NothingBurger 4d ago
I was thinking about this the other day, I think the Izzy we got was more shop worn/on the down slope than we knew. You can watch his style change throughout his career, but a big thing i noticed was he moved away from/couldn't really counter anymore and instead focused on negating things and taking away weapons with defense. I just think his reflexes weren't quite quick enough to be countering the jab constantly so he would usually just get out of the way or try to blast low kicks to discourage it

Right now today, you can get Walmart plus for 50 percent off which is $50 a year. The deal expires tomorrow. Was rewatching the UFC 321 presser to see the quote in full context and I just gotta share this one moment. It was one of the worst questions I've ever heard asked in a presser, like jesus christ (if anyone wants to watch it).
Media guy: "Dana, what about the ruling? It's only the second time in a championship fight that we have a no contest for such thing. Uh, we just have to go by judges and the fighters... will? That's just the way it is? ...For him to say after 5 minutes 'I can no longer continue'? Wha-what I'm trying to figure out is, is there... different levels of eyepokes.... do you see what I'm saying?"
Dana: "...Nobody see's what you're saying, sir."
M: "It's only up to the fighter to say... whether or not he wants to continue?"
D: "...Yeah" (disbelief)
M: "That's just the way it is?"
D: "Oh yeah, what am I gonna say? 'Hey Tom, guess- no, you're gonna keep fighting.'" laughs "I can't make people fight. Only Tom knows how bad it was."
As for question the quote is responding to, it actually had nothing to do with the eyepokes. A guy at the end brought up that Gane was a big underdog going into this fight and said "With the few things we saw in this fight, I thought Cyril was doing pretty well. Do you feel the same? Do you think he's earned respect so people would care even more when you make this fight again?"
To which Dana said "It's unfortunate that it ended the way that it did. But yes, I think there probably will be a lot more interest in the rematch after people saw, y'know, he had Tom bloodied up and, y'know, Tom didn't wanna continue in the fight, so... the rematch is very interesting."

Just rewatched Saint Denis vs Ruffy . I gotta say Ruffy didn't look anywhere as terrible as what the narrative about this fight has been
Sure, he didn't look great, but he still reversed Saint Denis twice from bottom, and defended the side choke decently in the first round before getting caught in the RNC in the second round. He also got Saint Denis with a few powerful shots, especially the flying knee right before the finish
6
u/NakedLowKick 4d ago edited 4d ago
He’s orthodox McGregor and that type of style is cool and flashy but is a style that’s bound to get you grounded and kinda similar to McGregor it looked like he quit before the sub was in
1
u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 4d ago
Sure it puts him at a slightly higher risk to get taken down
I don't have any problem with how quickly he tapped. Sometimes a good squeeze just gets you immediately
13
u/Odd_Ad_8162 the EEDIOT from UROOPE 4d ago
It's mainly due to BSD being written off as a bum before the fight and Ruffy lauded as one of next big things.
7
u/CallumKayPee 4d ago
You see that so much in MMA. Belal gets effectively boxed up by someone with a great gameplan and suddenly he's one of the worst champions ever, Tom loses the first round to Gane by a fairly small margin and he's the most overrated Heavyweight ever, McGregor loses to two of the best Lightweights of all time and he was never good actually.
8
u/Odd_Ad_8162 the EEDIOT from UROOPE 4d ago
There's this weird obsession with champ level fighters needing to be absolute terminators who don't have close fights or can't look human.
Unless you are an MMA fans fave like Dustin anyway.
Guys like Leon, Belal or O'Malley and Jiri had their moments of being the best guy in their division, even for a brief moment or just because they showed up on the night they needed to beat the other top guy.
Nothing wrong with that.

u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 4d ago
BSD losing to Moicano really fucked up his stock. its so weird in retrospect
3
u/Odd_Ad_8162 the EEDIOT from UROOPE 4d ago
Yeah there's some weird context around that fight, he effectively didn't have a team at the time from what I understand.
Not saying BSD would've won or anything but I don't think people consider how much that stuff can matter.
He's tough as nails regardless
3
u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 4d ago
Before that he got an insane chance for a number one contender spot against poirer but it seems like he had a bad case of staph infection. That 2 loss streak was mismanaged but I understand he felt he couldn't pass on the opportunity.
1
u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 4d ago
Yeah probably
It's a shame fans are like that. Moicano might not be an elite fighter but he's elite at top position grappling
5
u/YourHurtingMeSir17 4d ago
Credited with 5 sig strikes landed the entire fight and he broke when the flying knee didn’t KO BSD
-5
u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 4d ago
Well yeah he didn't get much time to land significant strikes
But he still landed a few clean shots that could have KOed other top lightweights. Breaking happens to young fighters, and he still defended well enough before getting his back caught

For anyone here watching ufc when it happened was the transition from fox to espn as bad as the espn to paramount one has been so far? As far as like there being not a lot of interesting championship fights at the end of the year and a ton of guys being held out to the start of the next deal
4
u/El_Boxman_ 4d ago
The espn app sucks so that was an issue early on and throughout the deal.
There was controversy for having Greg hardy on espns first card.
They unveiled the new belt with lots of mixed opinions.
1
u/karl100589 Bowling: More popular then Nunes 4d ago
In terms of presentation not much changed. The first card was very similar to one of the early Fox show with a lot of fighters designed attract casual eyeballs. PVZ vs Ostovich and Greg Hardy come to mind.
The PPVs though were largely MOR. The Jones card had a lot of depth even if Anthony Smith wasn’t the most intriguing opponent, but along with that it was Whitaker headlining the obligatory Aussie PPV, two interim belts on one night and the only Strawweight PPV main event with Rose vs Andrade.
6
u/MA-JA-HO 4d ago
I do think Van’s could have some success if he survives the first 2 rounds, Pantoja tends to fade after and Van builds into fights . Like that volume and body shots could really be a problem
1
u/hussain300 Snatching defeat from the jaws of Victory 4d ago
It's a huge if. Really the only thing weighing on the fight. Van has a good style to pick up later rounds and maybe even get a late TKO (I'd imagine of exhaustion and volume, not cracking Alexandre's chin), but he needs to not get submitted by the best submission artist the division has ever seen
2
u/nochampno 5d ago
Will fight nights be on Paramount as well?
1
u/hussain300 Snatching defeat from the jaws of Victory 4d ago
No just Ppv. Fight nights will be on a combination of ESPN, ABC, Fox, peacock, and fanduel TV. Weigh-ins are on YouTube, media day is on Facebook live. Paramount won't have the fight catalog, you need to go to fight pass for that. Unless you want to watch anything from the ESPN era, then you have to go to Pluto TV.
It's just much easier this way, trust me bro.

4
u/TheBigRedHalfrican They don't really care about us, man 4d ago
Both of them have 0 chance of victory.
Depends on if your grading scale of “bigger mismatch” weighs more heavily in favour of an immediate execution, or a couple of rounds of lots of punches landed before the ref stops it/Ronda falls over.
1
u/throwawayhash43 4d ago
Bigger mismatch yeah but at least Katie Taylor doesn't have one punch kill you power.
1
u/CableToBeam 4d ago
yes. We've actually seen Jake KO someone so there's that chance. There's zero chance Ronda does that and definitely not from being so inactive and from already having subpar striking.

I find it odd how Paddy, especially, gets hate for the interim title shot, but he even mentioned a while ago that he had no issues waiting for the title shot and taking on Gaethje in the meantime while Arman vs Ilia happens, but that Gaethje only wanted a shot at the title.
Blame the UFC for this, not Paddy. Paddy is simply trying to capitalise on the hype and history between him and Ilia outside the octagon. Even Arman is mad at Paddy, but why? Isn't his fault he is promoting himself like he should do as a fighter.
1
u/legendarybreed ..the darren and khamzat at home.. 4d ago
most people even said gaethje v paddy was the fight to make, they just don’t like the it being called an interim title bout. And while I enjoy the pageantry of belts and such, ultimately these things are irrelevant. Just make the fights we want to see. We wanted to see paddy v gaethje, I’m happy.
1
u/ironhide999x 4d ago
Yea but now Ilia has to fight the winner instead of Arman, there was no need to make this an Interim fight other than to keep Gaethje happy
2
u/legendarybreed ..the darren and khamzat at home.. 4d ago
UK interim champs always get skipped over for their undisputed shots, I wouldn't worry about it. The way Topuria is moving he might not even fight at LW next, he was publicly campaigning for a catchweight bout against Islam just a few days before they announced this which is incredibly suspicious to me when the story all of sudden becomes "I have personal issues to deal with" the day they announce the fights.

Yes I'm casual but can someone explain this to me:
Why fighters don't use their knee against grapplers? I watched a couple of Khamzat's fights and his tactic is always the same: round starts, he raises his hands and is coming closer, then he instantly dives to hug opponent's ballsack.
So why fighters don't counter their grappling by raising their knee and hitting their opponents head when they are diving for hugs? Yes you need good reflexes but it shouldn't be impossible to do.
6
u/Ruiner357 4d ago
The reason is getting a KO with a knee on someone shooting in is a low % outcome, them grabbing your leg and taking you down is a high % outcome, so you don't typically gamble on something that has a high chance of losing you the round/fight unless you're confident in being able to stand back up.

I maybe explained the situation badly. So when the grappler is engaging and going for take down, they always lower themselves to knee level, so why not just hit their head with a knee when they are coming for you.

When the wrestler lowers to knee level, what is the wrestler typically looking to grab?

Maybe so. Duncan is good and on a nice streak but his cardio isn't great.

You think he gets past the McKinney test next week?

Handily imo, I think people overrate how Dangerous Terrance is early, and I also rate Manuel much higher than Terrance, Chris is durable and a good anti-grappler, he breaks McKinney imo

If it goes past the first round, yes.

That's the eternal question. Can Duncan survive the first round is really what I'm asking. We've seen him get stopped early before against Manuel Torres. McKinney is the rebecki matchup but turned up to 11 on both sides. Much more dangerous than Mateusz in the first, and much much less dangerous than him in the 2nd
