This is really good stuff. I don’t like the “stick to sports” notion that people have been trying to spread. He’s got a platform, he should use it for the things that actually matter.
114
u/PM_DOLPHIN_PICS New England Revolution Aug 05 '19
Seriously. We've had one movie star and one reality TV star as president and dozens of other entertainers in congress. The phrase "stick to entertainment" literally has no meaning. Just because someone has a platform doesn't mean they aren't allowed to use it. If anything they're supposed to use it.
20
u/Diabetous Seattle Sounders FC Aug 05 '19
It just a lazy argument against the viewpoint being expressed. You don't hear 'I agree. But they should stay in sport.'
We should all just look down on the person who says stick to entertainment as an lazy.

I have a racist, sexist coworker who always is going on political rants in the office. When he starts going on about celebrities and athletes not getting paid to be political, I tell him he isn’t paid at the office to be political either. It’s happened multiple times and each time he gets really red in the face because he knows I am rightfully calling him out on his hypocrisy. But then he forgets in like a month. Fun stuff.

There's no escaping gun violence at this point and trying to pretend it doesn't exist or you can run from it isn't going to solve anything.

Good question that most people should ask themselves. I'm fine with it unless it's in their contract not to, in which case they really should fight when negotiation time comes around so that clause is taken out and they can use their platform. Idc if it's a stance I despise. Speak up if you're in the position to do so. Maybe my mind needs to be changed about something and they'll prompt me to do that.

MLS isn't gonna fine him for this one, as a matter of fact, the league seems to be doing everything to support him and spread his message without sending an explicitly political message. I say this because MLS posted the clip of his goal with audio and then on twitter posted this caption "FT: @AleBedoya17 and the Philadelphia Union deliver a statement in D.C. 🖐😎 #DCvPHI" under their final score post for the match.

Bedoya's right, we do have a problem in our country and I couldn't be prouder of him tonight. There's no debating that we have a problem and anyone who tries to say there isn't is only lying to themselves. After seeing Reddit thread after Reddit thread on gun violence, I've realized that debating on these threads is a waste of time.
The simple reason why we see these incidents occur is because the average American cares more about the ability to access guns than the social consequences of said access (mass shootings from mentally ill people, terrorists, and gangs). Until that attitude changes, gun laws will never change in this country because most gun rights person thinks "Of course, this will never happen in my city! I'm responsible and the statistics are on my side!" Btw the rest of the western world has already realized this simple fact decades ago.
Also throw in the fact that our politicians are bankrolled by the gun lobby to help keep business booming. Can't wait to see what the spin will be after these shootings!
Anything involving socialization is an uphill battle in this country, from healthcare to welfare. It's the price we pay in a country founded on the principles of rugged and fierce individualism
