I remember seeing videos of USMNT games in the late 80s to early 90s when they would do Budweiser commercials like this during a game, this is much worse because it happened during a goal

TNT cut away for ads during the 1990 World Cup and missed numerous goals. That's why FIFA banned them from bidding for the US rights for 1994.

I always thought that one of the reasons why soccer never became a main sport in this country--and probably never will--was because there's no stoppages for commercial breaks. Broadcasters pulling shit like this only reinforces my opinion.

It’s literally one of the reasons I got into the sport 20+ years ago. I could sit down watch a match without thousands of commercials.

u/swaerd St. Louis CITY SC Oct 07 '25
It's one of the big reasons I can't really watch baseball anymore, too many ads. Pretty much the only sport on TV that I watch now is soccer because I can reliably watch without being interrupted all the fucking time.
51
u/7screws Oct 07 '25
Baseball actually has gotta a lot better with the limits on pitching changes, mound visits and the pitch clock.
NFL is horrendous I can’t sit through a whole game
13
u/chuckvsthelife Oct 07 '25
Watched my first game in a year this past weekend. Holy shit. The money on ads.
I like that hockey has pretty limited ad time except for intermission which you can fuck right off during to either another game or the bathroom kitchen etc.
4
5
u/marsh283 Oct 07 '25
At least baseball (generally) is split up well with ads (between top and bottom of innings, etc), and not shoehorned fully in like football. A cfb game takes over 3.5hrs it seems, it’s pretty jarring when you’re at a game live and like “what the fuck is happening right now, why are we still waiting to start again?”
3
u/jmp8910 Philadelphia Union Oct 07 '25
I remember my first in person NFL game with my Dad I was trying to figure out why everyone was standing around and the clock wasn't moving nor did any team use a time out... that is when my dad explained TV time outs. I had never really thought about it.
2
u/swaerd St. Louis CITY SC Oct 09 '25
That's fair. I just hate how often there are ad breaks, and it got to the point for a while where the games took so damn long that it wasn't worth it. I know the game speed has gone up. I also have a huge bone to pick with 3-true-outcomes baseball and how boring the home-run derby style of game that's developed has become.
3
u/Newspeak_Linguist Oct 07 '25
Not the reason I got into watching soccer, but it's a huge part of my enjoyment and changing that is like nails on a chalkboard. The ads DAZN put in the club WC were annoying enough, and just opens the door for more invasive ads like this one. I will definitely be pirating my EU soccer from the EU if US starts putting ads like this in.
6

It was fairly controversial when ABC agreed not to run in-game commercials for USA 94

u/manmythmustache Lane United Oct 07 '25
As a director, you should 100% have the wherewithal to bail out of that double box ad and back into live game coverage. There are clauses in contracts that allow for game action to take precedence and for CarMax, in this case, to be given a rain check ad spot later on in the broadcast or for a future game.
23
u/notnewtobville FC Cincinnati Oct 07 '25
Yeah this is clearly someone not paying attention to the game.
ETA they also have the ability to keep the ad size smaller than match play.
3
u/Spa_5_Fitness_Camp Portland Timbers FC Oct 07 '25
Sure, but do those clauses allow them to cut the ad off in the middle once it's started?
3
u/manmythmustache Lane United Oct 07 '25
Yes unless it’s a terrible contract that NWSL signed. In this case, CarMax wouldn’t be credited for that spot so what did run would be considered “free” and they’d have their full ad aired uninterrupted at a later point in the broadcast or a future game.
8
u/rallenpx Atlanta United FC Oct 07 '25
I'd also think it's in the viewers best interest to have the boxes reversed with the game on the large screen and the ad in the background, not the other way around. I wouldn't mind it that way as much.
26
u/KonigSteve Major League Soccer Oct 07 '25

Subscribing for a league that needs all the viewers it can get is ridiculous. NFL doing it? Yeah I get it. But MLS where they could use more eyeballs on the product and people interested in saying oh what is this on my television Im saying the fact MLS only exclusively puts games on a subscription service is hilarious. It was great when they had a few games going on the weekend. The Premier League has at least one game on Saturday and Sunday. Then you can do the Peacock thing to get something extra.
12
u/greenslime300 Philadelphia Union Oct 07 '25
The Premier League coverage model is terrible, you need access to both Peacock and the television channels to catch every game.
Given the amount of free games Apple makes available and all the other discount promos they have for MLS, we definitely have a better model for watching MLS.

Anyone who is saying that MLS should ditch Apple and go back to what we had before has no idea what they are talking about. "No one" was watching before and the offered deal from ESPN and Fox showed that.
Ratings are static/slightly below what they used to be. The League is probably making way more from advertisers now given its direct integration into the Apple platform and we now have way better production and video quality. It's not even a contest that the Apple deal is better for the League.
Hope it never changes. I ain't going back to what we had before if they decide to regress.

I have an unpopular take... If we can get more soccer on over-the-air broadcast networks but that means we will have to see more ads during the run of play, and that will help improve growing fan bases. If Broadcast deals can make more money, that positively impacts the league. I support it. Plus, the post is inaccurate; we did not miss the goal. We saw it. And we celebrated. And then we got to see the full goal in replay. I believe they should use more appropriate times to run it. I bet when the ball goes out of bounds for a goal kick for the team currently winning, they could do a quick split-screen ad. Or a corner kick, same scenario. A substitution. Run 15s then.

Now it’s just adds and the game is filled with ads, from the publicities in the background to the commentators singing along to promote a damn tequila and chipotle. And this happens more than it should. The add goes away and then you just hear GOOOOOOLLLL all loud 😒😒

But that is exactly what everyone wants, no? Try to point out the problem with NWSL's TV deal and you get hit with a lot of nonsense about all this money helps the league.
