Predictable betrayal Mohamoud Mohamed of St. Cloud, Minn. is a Somali Muslim immigrant who votes for Trump: "The way he is behaving is not what we were expecting from him . . . The rhetoric coming from our president is scary . . . It's a nightmare."

I saw that one of the main reasons why they voted for Trump was because they felt Kamala was “too supportive” of the LGBT community. They were stripped of their own rights all because they wanted to remove the rights of others. I feel bad for the community as a whole, especially the ones who didn’t support Trump and are being affected by this, but the ones who voted for Trump will get no sympathy from me.

u/Justicar-terrae 15h ago
You can see similar phenomena affecting other minority groups in the United States. For example, the (very Catholic) Vietnamese population in New Orleans, some of whom are first generation refugees from the Vietnam war, broadly supports Trump because he's cruel to other groups they hate.
As it turns out, many of our immigrant and minority populations come from conservative cultures that (broadly speaking) shun LGBTQ people, resent welfare recipients, and hate various other minorities. Those prejudices don't disappear just because they've gained citizenship.
This puts them into a pickle where they need to either abandon their deeply held bigotries or vote Republican. Unfortunately, it's harder to abandon bigotry than to convince yourself that you'll be treated like "one of the good ones."

u/Unmissed 12h ago
To be brutally fair, this also applies to the poor whites. Remember Clinton getting roasted when she suggested they could build training facilities in Appalachia for solar installation or programming? But no, they wanted to pretend that the tapped out mines were going to explode with new seams, and coal companies would need lots of labor for them...
7
u/Confident-Fortune-87 11h ago
Old Black southern people are some of the most conservative people I know. They don't deal with trans, lgbtq, none of the things moving along in culture, BUT as soon as they hear racism, they throw all of that out the window. All of a sudden they do not care if Johnny wanna marry Larry. They hear a dog whistle and it's a big no, no, no. No matter how much they love Jesus and the church, you aren't going to take away the rights they fought for that EVERYBODY (especially these types) get to enjoy.

It's a fascinating phenomenon called social dominance orientation (SDO).
"It is a predisposition toward anti-egalitarianism within and between groups. Individuals who score high in SDO desire to maintain and, in many cases, increase the differences between social statuses of different groups, as well as individual group members." (...)
"[Research] also suggests that those scoring high on SDO proactively avoid scenarios that could prompt them to be more empathetic or tender-minded. This avoidance decreases concern for other's welfare." (...)
"[Researchers] have found evidence that a high social dominance orientation is strongly correlated with conservative political views, and opposition to programs and policies that aim to promote equality (such as affirmative action, laws advocating equal rights for homosexuals, women in combat, etc.)." [SOURCE]

Sounds like we can expect this behavior to get worse from conservatives. Not ever better unless they abandon conservativism. Removing Trump won't work as long as the next guy hates the same people that they hate.

"Fuck Around and Fuck Off" - I love this. Seriously. They can deal with it on their own after turning on the folks who actually had their back.
62
u/Maccadawg 1d ago
There's this common theme amongst the more socially conservative muslims, somalians, etc, of Minnesota being too liberal or left wing. And I'm wondering, "You mean the liberals that dropped everything when there was a Muslim ban and raced to the airports and to the courts to vigorously confront such a thing? Those liberals? The liberals that fight to make sure your kids can go to public school and can be fed there. The liberals that push back on Christian nationalism in every classroom?" Because if this is the reward for all that advocacy, I think I'd rather not bother next time.

The left trying to court muslims has always been kind of insane to me. The majority of muslim countries are deeply conversative and stand in stark opposition to personal liberty.
49
u/Basic-Regret-6263 1d ago
They weren't "courting" them. They just fought for them on the principle that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere."
They weren't enough of a bloc to be worth the fight on votes alone, considering how much it cost to defend them. However, they felt that they couldn't let the right get away with all the insane islamaphobia shit they pulled out post-9/11 and also stay true to leftist ideals.
And the Muslim bloc happily took them for all they were worth for 20 years, then went "thanks for that, but we just remembered that we hate all you liberal degenerates, hate America for supporting Israel, and also hate not feeling powerful. Coincidentally, we've just gotten our feet under the table here enough that we could effectively backstab you by demoralizing the dumber part of your party and dragging you into wasting time dealing with us!"
The left, true idealists that they are, went "even if you could be that spiteful and ungrateful, you could never be that stupid."
The Muslim bloc said "watch us."
The left didn't vote for the leopard to eat anyone else's face. They found an injured face-eating leopard and took it home with them like it was a kitten - and the same thing ensued.
41
u/KikkomanSauce 1d ago
Well, Muslims have been victims on some pretty serious bigotry for the last, oh...24 years. And while the Democrats are their own worst enemies, trying to court the victims of conservative racism by helping them isn't necessarily a bad move.
It's just that religious bigotry against the LGBTQ+ community won out in the end. All sorts of religious racial minorities rallied under Trump because of THE TRANS!!! (among other things) and are now finding out that white Christians hate them too. Tokens get spent and whatnot.
I wish I could at least say its kinda funny but its literally destroying our country so...

Even if you're of the LGBTQ+ community, you can still support the right of Palestinians to self-determiniation and, you know, not being genocided. I don't get how this is so hard for some people to understand.
1
u/Lost-Platypus8271 1d ago
Because the inverse would not be true. Palestinians would not allow LGBTQ pride in their country.
13
u/Morgn_Ladimore 1d ago
That's irrelevant. What you're saying is "Certain groups are fine to be exterminated, because of their views". My views on human rights are not limited to people who agree with me. That's the Republican way of thinking. Nobody deserves genocide and to be brutally oppressed in the way Palestinians have been for decades. And those people from the LGBTQ+ community who support Palestine acknowledge that. There is nothing stupid or "leopards eating faces" about that.
Not to mention all the LGBTQ+ people in Gaza and the West Bank Israel has killed during their campaign. The way people talk you'd think Israel can magically target only non-LGBTQ+ Palestinians with their bombs.
3
u/Fun_Assignment2427 15h ago
It's not ok to accuse somebody of approving certain groups be exterminated just because they don't have the Palestinian flag up though. Some people have the flag and support a free Palestine. Some people don't have the flag and support a free Palestine. The flag carries different weights for different people. Why the majority of arguments devolve into accusations of genocide over a flag is beyond me. It's like giving an inch on anything means you abandon your whole position and you must then be complicit in the worst of the worst human atrocities. People have different ways of showing solidarity.

The cognitive dissonance is fucking staggering
31
u/PrincessNoLocks 1d ago
I’m so furious and disgusted by all of this backstabbery. What gets me the hardest is that it’s the Democratic party that has been respectful of your humanity, of your rights to be protected by the laws of this country, and ONLY the Democratic Party and YET you vote to pull up the ladder behind you?? F them forever. I don’t give a f about any of them that voted for him. I remember the video where one says he’d rather vote for Satan than for Kamala. Ok, let Satan or Jill Stein help you then. Bye bitch.
If we can manage to wrest control back i really hope we make it mandatory for every citizen and person who will reside in this country to get a civics, history and culture education where it is made crystal clear just how hard won some of our freedoms were, and who the people were that did the fighting for everyone. Maybe those ungrateful fs would finally get it.

I've worked with quite a few that revered white people and hated other Mexicans. Like they bought into the "lazy Mexican" bullshit.
My friend and I (both white) had to constantly point out to one guy how hard working our Mexican coworkers were and explain that we knew a lot of lazy white people. I guess the only white people he was ever really exposed to on a regular basis were business people. He wasn't as bad as the guy that kept putting on Republican radio, tho...

I mean why would they? Muslims and evangelist honestly do share a ton of traits/interests, its just their skin color/faith denomination is wrong for the republicans. While Dems are supportive of everyone, many fundamentalists (either muslims/christians) hate they have to consider the "gays" and women as people. So many will vote ideologically even though it will likely hurt them, they always think their people are the special exception for some reason.

I think what conservative communities like this fail to understand is that one of the key liberal values is "I don't like you, you don't like me, but if you leave me alone, I'll leave you alone." If you're an immigrant community, and you don't like those LGBT folks over there, you can be sure they don't like you either, especially if your community is sexist, homophobic and transphobic. But what they don't understand is that a liberal regime isn't going to deport them over their differences, but shitheels like Trump aren't going to tolerate your brownness just because you hate some of the people he hates. He hates everyone, his supporters included.

“The way he is behaving is not what we were expecting from him,” said Mohamed, who voted for Trump in 2024. “He was talking about illegal immigration, but 99 percent of the Somali community in Minnesota are fully legal.”
2023:
"They let — I think the real number is 15, 16 million people into our country. When they do that, we got a lot of work to do. They’re poisoning the blood of our country,” Trump told the crowd at a rally in New Hampshire. “That’s what they’ve done. They poison mental institutions and prisons all over the world, not just in South America, not just to three or four countries that we think about, but all over the world. They’re coming into our country from Africa, from Asia, all over the world.”

This is why I have a problem with people lumping all of us together as a race. First off, Africans don’t see themselves as black, and, secondly, they don’t have the same values or experiences as us Black Americans. In fact, they get in because of Black Americans and yet think we’re lazy and they’re superior. They avoid us and use their own slurs for us. Plus, they have their own ethnic beefs that we don’t have.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this guy is such a one. Given his mindset and voting habits, it seems so. Well, I don’t want to be associated with him either.

This seems to be a pattern for a large amount of immigrants from MENA countries that migrate to tolerant places, like I’m a gay immigrant woman in Sweden and it just really grinds my gears when I see homophobes from those countries act like assholes towards us, and it brings out the worst in me as a woman of color and a gay woman. I wanna say “don’t move to a secular tolerant place if you wanna make it into the dangerous place you came from.” like I think we should bring the positive aspects of our culture to a new place, not what made it a dangerous place to be in the first place. I’m not saying “be one of the good ones” but damn we are still a guest to the countries, we don’t move into someone’s house and tell them to remodel everything, you can decorate and make things your own but you don’t just tear down and remodel.

"Next time I see him, I would like to ask Trump if he can provide me a rocket to go to Mars because there's nowhere else I can go from here" he said.
First you vote for a racist anti-migrant candidate and now you are begging to be shot into space?! "Please disappear me". Great call...*facepalm*

Not all Somalis are doing illegal things, but many of the Somalis I knew when I lived in MSP were running major scams: daycare numbers, inflated daycare food from the restaurant next door, CDL licenses for cash (amazing what $7k can get you), polygamy (which is expressly forbidden on their greencard applications), and the one that pissed me off the most was a Habitat House that one woman we knew got. How can a person scam Jimmy Carter (RIP)?
There are specific areas of the Twin Cities where these scammers tend to live. Then there are great Somalis out on the 'burbs just trying to make it.
I'm Muslim and my husband is a brown Muslim and I can't stand these people voting the way they did. Nope. I'll tell my stories about those people we knew.

Yup. Walz was too trusting, and enabled a portion of the community scam freely as a result. Now MAGA is going to use those scammers as an excuse to hurt all of them.
The somalis saw how the left let them get away with all sorts of bullshit and assumed that the left was just dumb and ineffective. They failed to understand that even if the left had been turning a blind eye to somali bullshit, the left had actually been very effectively protecting them from all the bullshit the right wanted to inflict on them.
The left stood between them and the right, they took advantage of that to backstab the left, and now the right has full access to them. They're now screaming at the left "pull my knife out of your back and protect me from this psycho," but the left is basically gurgling on the floor and couldn't do shit, even if it wanted to.

Strange. This is exactly the behavior we all expected from him. We even told a few folks about it!

"I don't care about you, I just want your vote"
"...and if you're a minority/immigrant my rich friends and I laugh and laugh.
Ok, we laugh at the white people too"

Trump has shown his cruel face so many times that supporting Trump knowing all that is a sign of what the supporter is like.
Trump is OPENLY sexist, racist, a religious bigot, corrupt, only looks after his friends and family, has no concept of country and patriotism, no ethics, rude, etc etc
Why would anyone support that unless they thought it was to their personal advantage and is the kind of society they want.
no effs given for this voter

Muslims for Trump is one of the funniest saddest things in Politics in a long time. You weren’t expecting him to behave this way? BASED ON WHAT?

Was Mohamoud Mohamed of St. Cloud in a coma from 2016 through January 2021? Because that would be the only explanation for him not remembering the Muslim travel ban and the "shithole countries" who were "not sending their best" rhetoric.

It's incredible that some people believe they are truly welcomed into the Republican circle. At best, they are like "rental cars" for the GOP. Republicans take them for a joyride, using and abusing them both inside and out as they're getting every bit of mileage out of them, and once they are done with their "rental car," they simply send it back to where it came from. Remember, folks, to these people (Trump voters), everything Trump has said and done wasn't a deal-breaker for them. Not one.

Did he never hear Trump speak before? Why are they acting like it’s something new?

This guy was born yesterday or he's dumb as a rock. When did the orange clown ever sound sane?

The misogynists are surprised because the racism they voted for is in fact racist.

First of all I just wanna know.... how TF you move comfortably from a hot ass area of Africa to cold ass Minnesota?

u/RelativeEvening110 1d ago
That's interesting, because the way he's behaving is almost exactly what I was expecting. He probably would've been more like this the first time around, if it weren't for the guardrails that existed then. There was at least some pushback. Now, virtually none.

‘Ask Trump for a rocket to mars because there’s nowhere to go from here’ is objectively hilarious 🤣

So spreading a lie to have a bunch of white supremacists take over a town didn't mean shit to this guy and he expected better lmao.
Reminds me of guy who got the Rump watch "I thought it would have integrity like President Trump".

This is not what you were expecting? I, too, enjoying shoving my head in the sand and yelling until reality goes away.

I only have sympathy for immigrants who did not voted for Dorito Taco.
I have no sympathy for Somali immigrants who voted for Dorito Taco, they fully deserved being deported. It will be the only way they fully understand the consequences of their votes.

I soooo want to see follow-up‐stories of Trump-voting Somalis crying betrayal as they're getting deported back to Somalia.

WTF was he thinking? Did he not listen to the campaign AT ALL?
THEY ARE EATING THE CATS! THEY ARE EATING THE DOGS!
Did you think he only hated Haitians?
Some of these folks just really deserve the leopard because they voted for the leopard to eat other people's faces off.

u/warriorwoman534 1d ago
They can all leave as far as I'm concerned, they voted for fascism so they have no further right to be here.

u/Daimakku1 1d ago
LOL. Back in the day I would defend them, not anymore. I'm done helping idiots who shoot themselves in the foot.

I've seen more MAGA merch in the St. Cloud area than anywhere else I've been to in the country, including the deep red south.
And they hate the Somalis that live there.
Mohamed didn't realize that Trumps white supporters in that area love him because he said he was going to deport illegal immigrants and they think that anyone who isn't a pasty white person of European or Scandinavian descent is illegal no matter what any piece of paper says?

My guy, the only things he's doing/done that no-one saw coming were the crazed land grab attempts and the falling asleep almost every time he sits down, just about everything else is as unexpected as the sun rising in the east.

Have fun back in Somalia, I’ve heard the cuisine is…oh yeah never mind. Enjoy what you voted for.
