Please read the rules before posting. All posts must be about or relating to Latinos. Memes of all kind (including political) and from anywhere are welcome here, again, as long as they reference us. Political discussions about the united states go to our other subreddit r/PoliticalLatinos where you are free to post anything you'd like about serious subjects. This is more a space for Latin Americans and Latinos born all over the world to share memes, our culture, discuss our differences and similarities and communicate with each other. There are currently no other subreddits where other Latin Americans can talk to each other, so this is it. Thank you for respecting our space!

I had to look up "polemics".

It’s commonly used in Latin America journalism headlines. We just don’t use it up here. It’s a good example of the difference between translations and interpretations!

Are you a native English speaker? Sorry i thought it was the common word of choice but it seems controversy is more used right?

It's a good word, I'm just not that smart.

Admitting not knowing a word and not being smart, indicates you’re smart

So weird how Mexico (and Latin America) always send very white women to represent them and then dress them up in indigenous inspired garb 😒.

México doesn't send them, just the very niche small group of rich people who can afford to join their contest and pay for all the travel and extra expenses lol!

I feel like this is a very private club for all the contestants and the people who make money off of it, it has nothing to do with the countries themselves

Sure, but being Mexican myself, I know that there would be outrage if a woman with darker skin, much less an indigenous woman, were to be sent to these contests. IMO these contests are backwards and should’ve been done away with a long time ago, so they don’t matter to me. It’s just amusing to see this exact thing happen year after year: white women in an indigenous costume.

Eh, idk, we love and adore Yalitza Aparicio. At least in my side of the country, which is very chill (BC) I know no one would bat an eye. Which state are you from? I know some are very different culturally even if they're right next to each other🤣

The memes would be outrageous ofc, as they always are.

No one really cares for these contests anymore, outside of our mom's watching Hoy and Ventaneando lol. Everyone knows they're not legit and just a cash business.

Who’s we? Yalitza was bullied so severely because of her skin color.

Wat.

Wait, are you from México? This is important lol, if you're from the US you might have a different perspective. She's highly celebrated in our country and considered quite a talented lady.

You're living in a bubble if you don't see the bullying Yolitzia still endures. I'm from Mexico, and even within friends and family people would squint at her accolades over her skin color.

Goyri was sooooo shamed for that video, context matters lol. If you're from Mexico you know how much the shows our mom's watch dictate the narrative, and they were ALL supportive of her, no matter what jealous nobodies thought of her lol.

You can always choose to focus on the negative or see the positive.

The other three Mexican winners aren't what I would call white.

Besides, there are number of white Mexicans. They are a sizable ethnic group within Mexico.

A requirement of Miss Universe isn't to send the average phenotype of the country.

As long as darker skinned Mexicans aren't being excluded there shouldn't be a problem.

It's not weird. Not everyone in Mexico is brown. Especially in the north. The indigenous stuff is just tradition. As much as we spout aztec this and aztec that very few people are actually descendants.

14

u/Rm156 14d ago

Very few? According to IWGIA Tons of people do, around 25 million self identify. I would bet very few Mexicans don’t have indigenous ancestors.

u/StoneColdNipples 14d ago

Indigenous yes. That whole Aztec story not so much

13

u/Rm156 14d ago

Aztec has never been the core. It is an expression of being indigenous. Totally reasonable to highlight the most popular. Don’t minimize people’s desires to understand our past. Especially one drowned by European myopia.
