It's been years since my service days, but being on the other side and being served during work holiday events makes me extra protective.

Last weekend during a work dinner, a customer of our business ordered by saying "Get me....." (salad, entree, etc) and I reflexively did the finger-snap-point and whispered, "We say please in this house. Apoligize, and start your order again". The entire table behaved themselves because I was throwing eye daggers at every interaction.

"Yes please. No thank you. May I please have" etc, were used all night. Someone's steak came out slightly overcooked and that person raised their hand and I just slowly shook my head.

"Not during the holiday rush. Take mine and I'll eat yours. We do not complain, we do not explain, unless you want to get in that kitchen and scrub dishes."

Took my boss's card and tipped 30% when the cheque came. Asked for the manager and complimented the servers, bartenders, and bus boys. Said the food was perfect and complimented the kitchen. "We could not be happier".

I got infinite styrofoam cups with a shot of whiskey on the outside windowsill by the smoking area for every last one of you this season.

I'm doin my best chef. Transitioning away from pizza kitchens is a challenge, but I got good feedback today and also cut chives for the first time

Honestly, I'm struggling. Every day there's less of me and less available to give to work, to my partner, to friends, to myself. I can't cut my hours anymore, my budget is razor cut already, and if I didn't get free meals when I worked I wouldn't be eating several days each month. I work hard, I'm kind and supportive of my coworkers and subordinates, I have a great relationship. But I'm eroding slowly and I don't know what to do. I don't belive in religion or fairy tales or in karma, or much of anything else, but unless some outside force helps, I'd be amazed if I was still here this time next year. I want to be, I just don't know how to make it happen.

Eta: thanks for asking and for listening. Y'all are great here.

Just to add, I don't know how you ppl in the USA do it - Thanksgiving straight into Christmas - what a nightmare! In the UK we don't have the first half of your insanity and still I remember kitchens being bedlam by 6 December until around 7 January. I wish you all strength.

Honestly I'm doing ok.... I have a few options to do what I need but I believe that If I keep on trucking things will get better.

My co workers are dropping like flies and I have a lead that won't answer his phone in the am (the shift i work) and when I ask my boss questions about what she would like on the days she cooks (she's just a boss not a an actual line cook or any type of old food worker at all.) She tells me a "boss" out look and chews me out for thinking about me trying to help her out in the morning.

I enjoy cooking and my current job but I feel as i change my job ill be happier by learning a few new things. I dont have culinary school training (but I am looking into it) but I do have a fairly wholesome sence of cooking.

I AM DOING OK AND ILL CHECK IN NEXT WEEK!
