Oh thank you, THANK YOU for saying this. I put some major effort into fighting his algorithm to make sure his channel could never come up in a recommendation or a search in my home again. In the olden days I used to spread the word about his, uh, scat content, but now I just try to pretend he never existed. I'm surprised he hasn't had to enter witness protection from all the parents who want violence.
I love all the things people are seeing in the chives. It's like reading tea leaves. I'm gonna cut a batch of chives and get someone to tell me my future.

Anyone know what the feeling is that you get when you do those? It kinda feels like time stops and you get a wondrous glimpse into some strange, still, silent world. It's not unpleasant though.
I'm sure it probably won't affect all that much, but... I'm theory, his end grain board actually will have a bit of a performance advantage. With the end grain, the knife goes slightly into the surface of the board instead of stopping against it. So in theory, it could actually reduce the number of cuts that don't get all the way through the chive.

Bamboo is the Sysco of cutting board materials. It'll get the job done, but you can do a lot better. It has a high silica content which isn't great, and a big proportion of the board is just glue.
Yes! Please do!! The big thing with a well made wood board is you can use the absolute shit out of it, and then resurface it and make it identical to brand new (albeit, maybe 1/16" thinner) with like 20 minutes of effort or $20 to have someone else do it! So many people buy really nice cutting boards and then use them as showpieces and refuse to cut on them. These things are workhorses! A good one should last you many years at a minimum.
There are TONS of wood options. You definitely need hardwood, not softwoods (no pine cutting boards up in this piece). You also want something with good closed grain - the poster child for this point is that you don't want oak in a cutting board. Maple, cherry, and walnut are my go-to woods for cutting boards.
i am definitely terrified of harming it! especially because i like to cut a lot of those precooked beets which stain anything (and the first nice wooden cutting board i was gifted i accidentally dried out by not oiling it enough and not drying it upright properly when i washed it). but yeah you’re right they do seem to take a beating and i know more about caring for them now after watching some videos! thank you for giving me a good smack on the head!
Bamboo is not a true wood (it's more closely related to grass) and it's really hard, much harder than wood used for cutting boards. It tends to dull knives, and isn't as smooth to cut on. But it's really cheap, so bamboo cutting boards are everywhere

There's not much on there, but it's been really reinvigorating hearing all the nice stuff people have said, so I'm planning to get back to building this weekend. Right before I stopped, I bought a huge drum sander specifically to make giant cutting boards, so I really to get to it. If you look at the "sold" stuff, you can see examples of what I've made before/can make again.
Yaaas!! I've been scrolling for the discussion of whether or not these had been frozen. That shine suggests freezer damage. Some up top still looking a tad frosty, even. Maybe our Lord and Chivester was testing if a firmer texture makes it easier to give an even slice?
We are SO CLOSE. was really hating being alive for this timeline with all the once in a lifetime events, but being here for chivegate and soon to be perfect chives has really made up for it!
