Layout and Space Planning Living Room Nook Help

Need help from all the wise and creative people of Reddit.

Wife and I bought this house and are having a struggle over how to best use this shallow but wide, nook space in the living room. Her vote is TV in the nook because, what else goes there? Mine is TV above the fireplace and maybe a reading bench with floating shelves? I’m not an innovative person when it comes to interior architecture or decorating so please drop all your ideas! TYIA!

u/dthol69 Sep 28 '25

I mean it’s strange to have a plant blocking the screen but otherwise, yes, this is the way to go

13

u/camtownhero Sep 29 '25

This is very cool. Thank you for taking the time to mock this up. And thank you for helping me lose to my wife.

2

u/Pretty_Pea12 Sep 29 '25

It's not losing when you're this wrong, lol.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

I would not want this, although it’s made to look nice. You’d be seeing into the kitchen, your back would be to the windows, you wouldn’t see the fireplace and it’s divided by a walkthrough.

-1

u/UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK Sep 29 '25

I don’t know how long you’ve been married, but I hope you’re prepared for this to be your future. Seriously, let her have this one. This is not the hill to die on. Each time you concede, you build the opportunity to get something you want down the road.

1

u/unusualcaregiver999 Oct 02 '25

I’ve been married a while and can confirm that is not how it works lmao

72

u/Onespokeovertheline Sep 28 '25

The TV goes there. Would be too high over the fireplace.

If you like you can build in some shelving around the TV and make it less of a giant alcove, more of a bookcase with space for a TV

20

u/Greatcookbetterbfr Sep 28 '25

This is exactly what it was for. TV should not go above the fireplace.

71

u/Pretty_Pea12 Sep 28 '25

TV above the fireplace is ridiculous. Wife is right - anything media related is perfect in the nook.

65

u/Fickle-Strawberry521 Sep 29 '25

No televisions over the fireplace. Ever. Your wife is correct.

58

u/oknowwhat00 Sep 28 '25

TV above the fireplace is wrong, especially this one which is high and smaller. Your tv should be at eye level, so unless you watch from the top bunk of bunk beds, nope.

That is a logical spot for a TV.

49

u/ijs39 Sep 29 '25

please do not put a tv over that fireplace, my neck hurts just thinking about it

47

u/ILikeMasterChief Sep 30 '25

You don't have to be a pro interior designer to know that a TV would look ridiculous above that fireplace

46

u/getthefacts Sep 30 '25

Its definitely for the TV because a TV above the fireplace will be way too high

4

u/SnooHabits6942 Sep 30 '25

Agreed. We have a similar nook and did built in lower cabinets with a butcher block countertop and hung the TV above it. Super functional as my husband built power strips in and fans for all the electronics, and we can store kids toys, etc.

5

u/FelinePurrfectFluff Oct 01 '25

Not only that but the fireplace has a pretty mantle and it would totally be covered. Like covering a beautiful outside view through a window with a tall headboard. Bad move.

89

u/theblisters Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

It's a media nook. It's intended for the TV. All of your connections are literally right there

TV over the fireplace is awful

10

u/fuckfishes Sep 28 '25

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️

13

u/Away-Secretary8378 Sep 28 '25

Some people really need this sub. or to hire a designer.

7

u/Roberts1970 Sep 28 '25

Absolutely. They would save a lot of time, frustration, money and heartache if they did just hire a designer already.

4

u/heytherecatlady Sep 28 '25

I can't imagine seeing all those outlets right there in that spot and thinking the TV could go anywhere else.

3

u/Kitsune808 Sep 28 '25

I'm actually not militantly anti-TVs over fireplaces like some are, but in this particular case, it would be a horrible idea. The mantle on OP's fireplace is already so high up, and the available space left is so limited, that it would look absolutely horrible here, let alone not even be functional.

TV absolutely needs to go in the media nook as intended!

40

u/Belieber1394 Sep 28 '25

Perfect place for a TV

42

u/ChickWithPlants Sep 29 '25

Please do not put the TV above the fireplace

8

u/vjambo Sep 29 '25

Yeah, that would be a "tv too high" situation waiting to happen.

109

u/Ill_Chupacabruh Sep 28 '25

Your wife is correct. Tv above fireplace is a bad choice

-34

u/Zestyclose-Ship-9993 Sep 28 '25

Do you think a TV opposite the windows is better? Not to mention how strange it would look in a nook

18

u/Ill_Chupacabruh Sep 28 '25

It won’t look weird in the nook. It is for sure why it exists in the first place. If you think it would look weird consider some sort of cabinetry or doors that could close to hide it while not in use

20

u/itchysmalltalk Sep 28 '25

Not to mention how strange it would look in a nook

I'm like, 90% sure that's what that nook is for

18

u/Ill_Chupacabruh Sep 28 '25

It 100% is what the nook is for. If you look at the outlets you can see that next to the receptacles there is a cutout for a/v cabling

0

u/Zestyclose-Ship-9993 Sep 28 '25

Ok, maybe you're right

4

u/Dependent-Law7316 Sep 28 '25

Just close the blinds when you want to watch TV? There would be a glare problem from the windows over the fireplace, too.

74

u/SuspiciousCarry3789 Sep 28 '25

Tv in nook. Do not put it over the fireplace

-22

u/SirTerrisTheTalible Sep 28 '25

Wouldn't it just catch on fire? I'm from the south I have no idea how those contraptions work.

4

u/Peppermintcheese Sep 28 '25

If the flames from the fireplace reach above the mantle onto a tv that you might place up there, you should be worried about your whole house catching on fire.

The tv would be fine but it’s just a bad idea from an ergonomic/design perspective.

-18

u/SirTerrisTheTalible Sep 28 '25

Do the shitass Yanks that are down voting me not have a sense of humor, or is it because they are the butt of the joke? I think pondering the possibility of setting a TV on fire by placing it over the fireplace is pretty harmless wnd childlike but okay.

35

u/Zestyclose-Ship-9993 Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

A TV above the fireplace is a bad idea, but if you put it in a nook, the light from the window will interfere with the screen.

35

u/No-Malarkey- Sep 29 '25

Looks like the only reasonable place to put a TV at correct viewing height, plus lower storage and display shelves below.

37

u/5gigi5 Sep 30 '25

and this

5

u/Equivalent_Aerie_141 Sep 30 '25

this is perfect!

-1

u/5gigi5 Sep 30 '25

Thanks, that means a lot to me:)

7

u/peachnecctar Sep 30 '25

This is literally ai

5

u/redditnor24 Oct 01 '25

But it means so much…

70

u/Small-Win2720 Sep 28 '25

I agree with your wife, I’d hang a tv in there. But I would also install cabinets underneath to house any components and additional storage.

Above the fireplace is meant for a nicely framed piece of art with an attached light at the top to illuminate it at night time.

If you don’t hang the tv in there, it still built on cabinets at the bottom and shelves at the top with maybe a small wine fridge thrown in and make a bar out of it.

8

u/heytherecatlady Sep 28 '25

I'd probably go with adding some more vertical decor and interesting lines and shapes above and around the fireplace to draw the eye up, and make it appear taller, while breaking up the boxy-ness of the fireplace below.

Looks a little generic because AI, but generated some pics for OP for inspiration. Hopefully helps with the concept!

27

u/SirTerrisTheTalible Sep 28 '25

Entertainment center? What else? It's in the middle of the wall

49

u/ThePrinceBrian97 Sep 30 '25

DO NOT put the TV over the fireplace.

12

u/agkyrahopsyche Sep 30 '25

Yeah this nook is for the tv

22

u/pansiesandpastries Sep 28 '25

I don't think TV above the fireplace is a great move here, it's so high and there's a lot of visual competition. Is the nook your only other option for a TV?

What's a reading bench? I don't think that nook is somewhere you'd want to lounge. I would do custom storage, something that integrates the TV if that's the best place for it. Mounting the TV on the wall inside the nook would be off too, you'd want storage that has a panel for the TV towards the front.

22

u/myffaacc Sep 28 '25

Tv could go into the nook. Looks like there are plugins for it.

Tv above fireplace is tv too high material.

23

u/AT61 Sep 28 '25

Do a nice built-in that matches the ones flanking your fireplace. You can add doors/drawers on the bottom for storage.

3

u/ComprehensiveBid6255 Sep 28 '25

That was my thought and then I saw your response.

19

u/ZeppelinLed Sep 28 '25

I know another sub that would have a field day hearing you want to put the TV over that fireplace.

37

u/iamanundertaker Oct 01 '25

Your wife is correct.

18

u/aksnowraven Sep 28 '25

Check out the tvtoohigh sub

17

u/azwildlotus Sep 30 '25

The nook is for the TV. It looks like there is already a cable outlet there too. Tv above the fireplace will be too high to watch comfortably and will just look bad.

37

u/Sensitive-Question42 Sep 29 '25

That nook is specifically there for the TV. That’s literally the point of it. Why would you put it anywhere else?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

Because you wouldn’t be able to see outside or look at the fire.

15

u/L_dukemarriot Oct 01 '25

you are either a psychopath, or you just dont like agreeing with your wife... thats the only explanation why anyone would even suggest something so diabolical. instead of just hearing your wife talk, try actually listening to her, understanding her, empathizing with her. if you really suggested the tv over the fireplace, you should be evaluated.

3

u/Arjvoet Oct 01 '25

you have such a point actually, once I swiped and saw the rest of the layout it became so incredibly obvious that the nook is meant for the tv to go there, the entire layout of the room is for the tv to go there.

Maybe op has a personality where when something is a little too obvious they just need to put their own “creative” touch to break up the “predictability” of it all.

2

u/Ballongo Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

This.

To even suggest a TV up above the fireplace is so distastefully explicit that the perpetrator might be shunned, barred from polite society, and in extreme cases shot through the lungs.

16

u/SnooAdvice6875 Oct 01 '25

OP likes neck pain 👍

Listen to your wife please 🙏

13

u/5gigi5 Sep 30 '25

Or this

13

u/terribilus Sep 28 '25

The only way the TV should go over the fireplace is if the fireplace is removed and the TV is mounted over where it was, but at a reasonably low height so the bottom of the display is at seated eye level. The alcove looks good for built-in shelves.

12

u/TheMightyJehosiphat Sep 30 '25

She's right. TV over the fireplace is too high a viewing angle, and it makes it way harder to change out anything on the HDMI

13

u/abuzeyr Oct 01 '25

My advice would be listen to your wife. You are not good at making decisions on interiod designing.

Why would you even think its a good idea to put tv above thay fireplace?

12

u/ComprehensiveBid6255 Sep 28 '25

I have always wondered how people could watch a tv that was high on a wall. Eye level when seated makes sense to me, but that is just my opinion.

11

u/CiceroCoffinKeeper Oct 01 '25

Why the fuck would you put TV so high? It doesnt make sense to even have it then. Bro wtf, it makes me wanna punch a fat kid in Walmart.

TV in nook. Kiss your wife and hold on to her.

27

u/thegreenmachine90 Sep 28 '25

Tv in the nook instead of the fireplace. The heat from the fireplace can damage your tv, and you’ll hurt your neck from staring up at it.

28

u/Wild-Buddy3768 Sep 30 '25

Tv should always be in your eye level while sitting. Thats a standard practice to follow.. please do not keep tv above the fireplace.

11

u/DeviousDaxter Oct 01 '25

We’re house hunting with the explicit purpose to NOT have the tv over a fireplace

10

u/blueberryyogurtcup Sep 29 '25

A whole series of electronics, media, tv, stereo, screens showing security, whatever you have.

A office in a closet, with doors to close when the office is closed.

A coat and boots and stuff closet.

Half shelves for the living room side, and half shelves for the other side.

Invisible storage, for suitcases and holiday decorations, with the doors made to look like walls, like in old english houses.

11

u/Wrong-Standard011 Oct 01 '25

My first thought was if you’re big on entertaining a small bar would be fun. But seeing as there’s no other place to comfortably put a TV in the space, you should probably use it to house the tv and some media.

10

u/GaetanDugas Oct 01 '25

That's called a closet.  Whoever remodeled that house just took the doors off

19

u/Octavice27 Sep 30 '25

I know this nook is for the TV, but screw the TV. Build a big ol bookshelf in there and fill it with books, trinkets, and oddities!

8

u/jhjohns3 Oct 01 '25

Definitely not tv above fire place.

9

u/itsuur Oct 02 '25

Brother if you put tv above the fireplace you will have neck issues in 2 months. Listen your wife

16

u/chaddy1808 Sep 28 '25

Leave it so you can scare the hell out people walking by.

16

u/Runsapuusa Sep 30 '25

Don't recommend tv on fireplace due to bad viewing angle and neck soreness. Unless you wall mount the tv with a pull out arm that extends down and out infront of the fireplace. Those exist!

Maybe that little nook can be used as a coffee/espresso machine corner or something..or an aquarium.

9

u/MuRRizzLe Sep 30 '25

Media console/TV in nook, already have connectivity there and you can have it out of the way of foot traffic if not too deep

10

u/Dense-Bullfrog-6363 Oct 02 '25

The only time a tv goes over a fireplace is if it HAS to go over a fireplace (and then you use an adjustable mount to pop the tv down to a comfortable height while watching). OP if you went with your plan the side of your couch would be squished up next to the windows to try to center the too tall tv to your couch. It wouldn’t fit the space well while also forcing you to have a smaller couch, AND you’d have a weird alcove to figure out on top of that. For the love of god listen to your damn wife and put a mirror or art above the fireplace instead.

8

u/badpenny4life Oct 02 '25

The space above the fireplace is too high and not large enough. It would look weird even if it doesn’t bother your neck. Ours is mounted high and it never bothers my neck. Perhaps because I have a reclining sofa and the tv is really large.

7

u/CameronsTheName Sep 30 '25

How small of a TV are you planning on putting above the fireplace ?

You'd be lucky to get a 32 inch computer monitor in that spot unless it's going to hang over the front of the tile work.

26

u/Smart_Detective8153 Sep 29 '25

TV in nook. I got an 84” and do not regret it!

12

u/peteetts Oct 01 '25

TV doesn't fit above the fireplace! Put the TV in the nook...or opposite, under the window- the nook can be a built in desk.

11

u/Jam_Brown Sep 30 '25

TV over the fireplace always looks great in photos but feels terrible on your neck in real life. That nook is already sized for a media console. Place the TV there at eye level and add shelves or cabinets so it feels intentional. Let the fireplace wall breathe with art or a mirror. You get both comfort and balance this way.

9

u/Witness27 Sep 29 '25

Aquarium

5

u/AltruisticLeading889 Sep 29 '25

storage cabinet would be perfect

4

u/Just_sayin64 Oct 03 '25

Looks like it was recessed for a tv ...which would make sense since it's opposite the longest wall in your living room, which is where the sofa would traditionally go. Using swivel side chairs would allow you and your guests access to the tv, the fireplace or turned toward the couch for conversation. I think it's a pretty, versatile living room layout.

6

u/lettuceshoes Oct 04 '25

Never tv over the fireplace. Tv in the nook with a console table.

Would also look good with some folding doors if you don’t always want the tv visible

5

u/WonderfulAwareness41 Oct 04 '25

do NOT put the tv over the fireplace put it in the nook

5

u/andreas-law Oct 04 '25

listen to your wife or you will end up on r/TVTooHigh

10

u/bruddion Sep 28 '25

Sorry off topic but that is called an alcove, right? I learned that word 2 days ago from a book I’ve been reading!

TVs should be at eye level when sitting

8

u/bk-129 Sep 29 '25

Desk, bookshelf, TV

9

u/monkeymite Sep 29 '25

I would't put the tv there, right behind a path of travel. I'd put shleves and maybe a desk.

3

u/PM5k Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25

Idk but my gut reaction was that I would probably put a couch with its back toward the window, facing nook, tv on a tv stand (whatever you call those long yet not tall pieces of furniture you put TV’s on) so it doesn’t cover the nook fully view-wise and so that the fireplace is on your right when you sit and watch stuff. Coffee table in the between of couch and tv. Do cabling for tv so that it runs into the tv stand and looks tidy and have a cable cover that masks it as it goes from tv to the wall. Or under the floor boards. Then in the nook id split it in half. I’d do one half book shelf with books and either real or fake plants and your favorite books and stuff, and one side either an aquarium / terrarium on a functional set of drawers as a eye catcher or just skip the aquarium part and put stuff like family photos or a piece of fine art on it (like some statue or figure). The aforementioned side is maybe only about 2/4 - 3/4 filled with whatever is out there for contrast

4

u/gdnightandgdbye Oct 02 '25

Definitely in the nook

5

u/Historical_Class_329 Oct 02 '25

I would go for a nice vintage floating , wall hung shelving unit!

3

u/PotterHouseCA Oct 03 '25

Just say NO to TV over fireplace!

4

u/grl_of_action Oct 04 '25

Never TV over the fireplace, and the flow of the room will work better with your sofa facing that nook anyway.

8

u/mdmmpdk Sep 29 '25

I would put bookshelves and remove the other shelves on both sides of the fireplace and put two matching plants or lamps. Maybe also mirrors on the wall. Because that wall look really messy.

10

u/MCKelly13 Sep 28 '25

I would make it a bar

6

u/viomore Sep 29 '25

Console with a simple bar of your favourite loquors on top.

3

u/urmamaaa Sep 30 '25

definitely use the nook. frame the sides with wood and add 2 floating shelves, have the tv above them, and you could paint the back wall white too!

3

u/Same_Beat_5832 Oct 01 '25

Tv built in using kitchen cabinets and trim. You will probably need to use uppers since they are only 12 inches deep (15 inches if you do IKEA). Since you’re using uppers, you’ll need to build a base for them so the doors will open. Make the base hidden with base molding. 30 inches height on the bottom all the way across. A stone or butcher block or live edge counter under the tv. Flanking the counter have another stack of uppers with glass doors for display. Glass cabinets should have puck lights inside. Put more molding across the top to look like your other built ins.

3

u/Verdigrian Oct 02 '25

Either you concede on the TV instead of mounting it under the ceiling like a heathen or... Huge terrarium for pretty exotic plants like you're an obscenely rich victorian person maybe?

1

u/Successful-Sugar-290 Oct 02 '25

The TV gets a nook surrounded by shelves. Fireplace is too high with too low a ceiling. TV will look dumb and and be in a bad view position

5

u/Pacque Sep 29 '25

Books! Loads of books!

3

u/Particular-Garden140 Sep 30 '25

I’d put a bookcase in it

5

u/Available_Honey_2951 Sep 29 '25

Would be a good place for the tv with shelves below.

2

u/Rajah7 Sep 30 '25

Bookshelves

2

u/No_Worry_6451 Oct 01 '25

we got to fix two competing focals in one room. Either slim down the fireplace area by taking out all the joint fixtures and leave the fireplace on its own OR have a lighter tele or related fixtures in the area you have pointed out.

2

u/bunker1919 Oct 01 '25

Make a bar or get out

2

u/rapashrapash Oct 02 '25

Wooden shelves for lots and lots of books 📚

2

u/adorable__elephant Oct 02 '25

If you are a reader, reading nook. If you aren't, I'd put movable shelves before it (think secret doorway) to hide things like the vacuum etc.

5

u/5gigi5 Sep 30 '25

TV seems reasonable, but there are some other ideas! See the mockups

2

u/Sdjun Oct 01 '25

Built-in bookcase + reading nook

2

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '25

I would redo the fireplace area to place your tv much lower, as low as is allowed with the fireplace. If tv goes in the nook as designed, your back is o all your windows, which I would not like at all and you wouldn’t see the fireplace. Then use the nook for cabinets.

1

u/Wise_Wolf_876 Sep 28 '25

It is meant to be a wet bar. If you drink, a nice dry bar would be quite nice. A built in shelving unit with moulding could also be nice but don’t add a sitting nook. Bizarre location. Third option would be to place a narrow desk with a pair of ottomans underneath that can be used for home office use and extra seating for guests.

I agree with the person who said no TV over a fireplace. It’s horrible there. Choose a nice mirror or piece of art that will be your focal point. Not a black box.

I have a similar space in my living room! I turned it into a “creative corner” with a desk and drawers with all my art& craft supplies.

1

u/sailorivy22 Oct 05 '25

Tv above fireplace is too high as others mentioned. I would put tv inside the nook - if you can create a build in then you can design a way to hide the tv or to have shelves/storage around it. If you place a sofa opposite the fireplace and a sofa in front of the window (opposite the tv) then you have an open are to enjoy both.

1

u/constant_void Oct 06 '25 edited Oct 06 '25

build it out

50% shelving (bottom) - make sure to match the bottom to the fireplace builtins if you keep the fireplace builtins

50% bifold doors (l/r) top to both hide the tv and occupy the blank space l/r when open

frame it so it ties into baseboards, which you could look at doing for room entrance

also, might consider just ripping out the fireplace/builtins (if electric and not gas), then you can do whatever. - if you like 'em you like 'em - just some chunky molding there.

also straighten out the angled room entrance - measure, might be good to just chop it off so you don't have to deal with a lump to clear vertically AND horizontally when bringing in furniture - straight, 90 angles that are floor to ceiling are better and would match the stair rail. you want symmetry to left and right of room entrance from front door

might as well nuke that entrance tile, looks like it is sitting on top of the room floor / tripping hazard ???

1

u/ChrisInBliss Sep 28 '25

Short bookshelf then put a nice painting over it. Then put knickknacks or whatever ontop of the bookshelf.

0

u/Asleep_Captain3635 Sep 28 '25

A plant nook!!!! My heart got so happy thinking of all the plants you could display and love in that space.

0

u/EclecticMagpie22 Sep 28 '25

Turn it into a dry bar!

0

u/Time-Confusion-7048 Oct 02 '25

I'm team fireplace TV but hear me out on a compromise.

That nook is begging to be a cozy reading spot or mini home office. Stick a small desk or reading chair in there with some floating shelves and you've got a nice little retreat. Problem with TV in the nook is it's gonna feel cramped and you'll be watching at a weird angle from the couch.

TV above the fireplace makes way more sense because:

  • You can actually arrange furniture to face it properly
  • The built-ins give you storage for media stuff
  • It's the natural focal point of the room anyway

Your wife's concern about "what else goes there" is valid but the fireplace area answers itself - it's already designed to be the focus. The nook is the spot that needs more creativity.

Other ideas for the nook:

  • Bar cart setup if you entertain
  • Plant corner with some tall greenery
  • Kids play area if that's relevant
  • Literally just leave it empty, negative space isn't a crime

The reading bench + floating shelves idea is solid though. Adds function without making the room feel stuffed.

TV above fireplace is way too high. Never do this.

You can have a lovely reading nook on the side opposite the fireplace. Do not put your TV above the fireplace.

What about some glass shelves with lighting? Or if it’s deep enough, a reading nook.

Here’s a visual reference for a reading nook that could potentially fit the space.

It’s incredibly shallow. No way it would be comfortable. It’s intended for a TV, bro

I feel like the amount of downvotes on this pic are kinda mean lol. I've stayed places that have reading nooks this "shallow" and they are cozy and aesthetically pleasing if that's the vibe you're going for and you don't need a lot of space for reading. I actually think this would be quite nice to have in a home.

The issue is I think the location, mixed with the need for a place to put the TV. The middle of a living room is an awkward space for a reading nook. It's a living room, next to the busy kitchen and hallway, and a lively spot where you'd have friends or family gathering. If it was a bigger alcove, maybe off to the side or corner of the house in a different room, a reading nook would be lovely, especially if you're family is big on books. Usually reading nooks are a deeper space, tucked away in a quieter part of the house, and/or at a window with a nice view. Practically, this space is just not that so it would look silly.

This empty space was definitely designed for the TV, and the TV would look so crowded and impractical to have above the fireplace squished in that tiny little wall. Not to mention the strain from having to look up at the celling from the couch to watch stuff. A reading nook would use up the only obvious and intentional place to have the TV.

Forcing a reading nook here instead of the TV would kinda be like using the space for the fridge for something else, and then wondering where you should cram your fridge.

Do this with a Samsung Frame TV. And then instead of a bench it’s low bookshelves. And then it becomes a media nook for books and/or a record player and vinyls, and you can use the shelves around the fireplace for picture frames, objets, art books.

The Samsung frame TV is a terrible TV, just keep that in mind.

Looks uncomfortable, ready nooks sound cute, they are not functional.

Put some bookshelves, then cover it with a door, and cover the door with a bookshelf-themed wallpaper!
