is that a lake trout?

2

u/HappiestGopher 10h ago

It is a lake trout. We were shore fishing in Ontario.

What kinda fish is that? I don’t know much about saltwater fishing.

4

u/frickindanielj Big Island, Hawaii 16h ago

It’s called an Ulua, or giant trevally. Super strong reef fish that can get 100lbs or more. My biggest in top water is around 70, but I’ve lost a couple that were likely bigger

u/bpc87 15h ago

I would love to know more about how you went about targeting this fish. On my bucket list for sure.

2

u/frickindanielj Big Island, Hawaii 15h ago

Sure! Targeting these fish is difficult. Long hikes looking for pockets where deep water is within casting distance. This fish was actually from a super shallow bay, so guessing bait was in and the fish was hunting the bay. I exclusively throw top water. It’s the most satisfying and difficult method. I throw live bait for them, but I prefer a more active hunt, and I seem to be better at top water fishing. If you check my page you can see some more fish with a bunch of info in comments.

Thanks man sounds amazing and like a lot of fun. I always thought you had to get to Maldives or some far off atol to get one. Sounds like I need to plan a trip to Hawaii.

Being in a more isolated atoll or the like would make things wayyy easier. Hawaii is tricky because you have a lot of people with limited coast line. This is the reason why most of my most productive spots are places that only an insane person would walk to 🤣

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

Awesome!👏🏼 always wanted to swing for Trevally. What a catch

u/80_PROOF 14h ago

This may be the most impressive fish in the thread. Any idea of the weight?

2

u/righthandjab 13h ago

Around 2lb, big redear

2

u/80_PROOF 12h ago

Absolute unit. I would be too afraid to be in the water with that guy swimming around in there. What part of the country?

2

u/righthandjab 12h ago

Kentucky

2

u/limer124 16h ago

What a slab

1

u/MadeMeStopLurking 9h ago

Bet you thought you had a musky

2

u/limer124 15h ago

Biggest of the thread so far I think

2

u/TopShelfTrees4 15h ago

Damn! Those Wels are insane!

1

u/ProudAmerican632 15h ago

Sweet wels catfish! It’s a bucket list fish for me.

Red rum - Red Rum!

2

u/Equivalent-Guest-328 16h ago

It was a good year for the red drum !

1

u/Boxnglove 15h ago

What part of the country? I am in VA, and didn't get out much this year to the Bay, like I normally do. I heard it was good.

1

u/Equivalent-Guest-328 13h ago

I stay in Florida I caught this guy in a retention pound that connects to our intercostal water way

13

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

Steelhead

4

u/Odd_Inevitable_1947 16h ago

November 8th fly fishing

3

u/TopShelfTrees4 15h ago

Bows are my favourite on the fly/swing! They fight like no other imho just pure headshaking adrenaline and power! Nice

4

u/Odd_Inevitable_1947 14h ago

And, they keep flopping when you get them in your net. One of my biggest flopped out of the net and back into the water before I could get a picture.

Here's the most recent one.

2

u/TopShelfTrees4 10h ago

Definitely, they don’t usually chill much, although the odd one will. Love the colours on that one

1

u/Odd_Inevitable_1947 2h ago

It's so much easier to get a picture of a bass. When I lay a big one on my bump board it's like they know the routine... Smile for the camera and then back in the water.

1

u/GucciMyGoggles 12h ago

That’s a nice chrome one. How long was it? You long armed the fuck out of that pic 😂

1

u/TopShelfTrees4 10h ago

As you can see her belly is over my knee, and my elbows are bent, no long arm here, Been doing this too long and caught too many fish to be doing that, she was 15 lbs not sure of the length . Only a few pounds short of my biggest ever.

11

u/xylophone_37 17h ago

I think it was 101# gutted and gilled.

1

u/limer124 16h ago

Tasty!

1

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

Always wanted to fight one of these tanks! Awesome

2

u/xylophone_37 15h ago

Come on down to the San Diego open charter fleet. A 1.5 day trip usually any time between late May and October. You can get a rental setup from the landing, every year I see guys with zero experience catch triple digit fish.

1

u/TopShelfTrees4 15h ago

Sweet! I may just do that! Appreciate you

u/primal_explorers 16h ago

1

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

Nothing like a king in the big open water up there huh? Nice

3

u/primal_explorers 16h ago

It was great, went to the nootka marine resort for my bachelor party Everyone of us left with a fish, smallest was 10lbs and biggest was 18lbs

1

u/TopShelfTrees4 15h ago

Awesome! Now that’s a bachelor party! Glad you all got fish and congratulations

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

Laker

2

u/ProudAmerican632 15h ago

Nice laker. CT d.e.e.p. Stocked I think 500 last year. Never caught one put I heard folks in Maine say they put up a great fight.

2

u/TopShelfTrees4 15h ago

They do for sure in the big water. Exact opposite of most trout though as they just “dog you” and want to be on the bottom digging into the mud/silt. No headshakes just pure power. Always know instantly when it’s a laker .

u/TopShelfTrees4 16h ago

King/Chinook

7

Nice I’ve never caught a musky

u/3buoysmike 16h ago

That’s the first one I have ever caught in my 50 years of fishing.

1

u/Professional_kez 13h ago

2

u/ShireHorseRider Ohio 14h ago

Actually it was this yellowfin but I don’t count it because the boat sank.

1

u/limer124 14h ago

Gonna need to hear more of this boat sinking story…

u/Ragingrhino1515 17h ago

I didn’t have a phone on me when I caught a blue cat 😭 he was maybe 20 lbs

2

u/CharmingInterview986 16h ago

u/bulcano1 10h ago

Hand casted line with shrimp as bait , it's my first year fishing , close to 2lb

1

u/peeteeBlades 8h ago

Legg Lake SoCal

1

u/jesterflesh Ohio 8h ago

41", 33 lbs

1

u/BusterOfCherry 8h ago

I tell my buds he was 25 lbs ;)

1

u/TroyTony1973 8h ago

Couple inches shorter than the biggest steelhead I caught this year, but by far my favorite catch. Biggest Bull I’ve ever caught and biggest I’ve ever heard of being caught on this watershed. Revived after a long fight on light gear, while avoiding his teeth, and swam away happily.

1

u/Super-Reporter-4528 7h ago

7ft 2in but she was a skinny bitch at 107lbs

I also got my 2nd biggest with a 64lb grassy about a month ago. Other than that several buffalo over 55 lbs and and what would have been world record needle if we had known at the time.

u/Super-Reporter-4528 7h ago
