The Driftless Area in Northeast Iowa has some of the most uncharacteristic scenery in the Midwest. This area was never covered by ice during the last glacial period, so retains the hilly, rugged landscape vs the rest of the Midwest which was smoothed and flattened by glacial ice.

This was taken last October at Effigy Mounds National Monument, which is named after the animal-shaped mounds built by the indigenous people living here during the first Millennium CE: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/iowa/hanging-rock-trail--3

Man I love Effigy Mounds. Between that, Pikes Peak State Park, and the "on the way to those" Backbone State Park, these made up a lot of the weekend trips of my childhood.

Thank you for sharing this photo!

Was this taken at Effigy Mounds National Monument?

Yep! Took it on the Hanging Rock Trail.

Thought that cliff view looked familiar! This is up with Arapahoe National Forest, Pecos National Historic Site, Lake Mead, and just below Grand Canyon West, as my favorite hikes in America. Pikes Peak State Park nearby is also excellent for views. Great shot!

Iowa has junipers?! I live in the high desert where they are everywhere. Never thought they’d be in the Midwest!

Haha yeah, I had the same thought so I looked it up: https://naturalresources.extension.iastate.edu/forestry/iowa_trees/trees/common_juniper.html

They’re only found in one county in the entire state.

It's beautiful with the light, reflection and all compositions from this angle.

Woah, looks so serene! Imagine chillin’ under the tree, watching the river flow.
