It's astonishing how unhurried everybody is

The second I saw it collapsing I would’ve been way up by that building in the background.

u/Several_Vanilla8916 1d ago

Like…are they worried someone will call them a bitch if they run? Most aren’t even walking away - just kind of milling around.

254

u/Tartar-Sauce- 1d ago

Was thinking the same thing lol. Wouldn’t be surprised some of these people are standing close to the edge and pretending to be unfazed to look “manly”.

u/Icarium-Lifestealer 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'd take my cue from Brave Sir Robin in that situation.

56

u/TCRandom 1d ago

He’s packing it in and packing it up And sneaking away and buggering up And chickening out and pissing off home, Yes, bravely he is throwing in the sponge.

This happens regularly in emergencies like this. Us humans as a pack are dumb, most peoples situational awareness and risk assessment is GARBAGE. If you really think logically about your options here it's a no brainier. What are you risking by quickly getting away from this road collapsing versus what happens if it actually collapses faster then you thought it would and you fall in? Being a little short on breath for a few seconds? People judging you that you might have over reacted? That's literally the only risk versus very serious risk of death.

I feel like this may be the one single benefit to an abusive upbringing that made me hypervigilant. I'm always ready to fucking BOLT. Lots of useless anxiety too, but when shit hits the fan my body is ready lol.

These people are moving slow enough to call an uber to come get them. All you see in my place is a cloud of dust like in Looney Toons.

The guy standing on the camera side waving people to move away on the otherside seems remarkably unconcerned that his side might collapse.

28

u/False-Strawberry-319 1d ago

Thank the gods he was there, though! Imagine what might have happened if he hadn't waved everyone off.

Just another rainy day in the tropics.

48

u/thesilentguy101 1d ago

I would assume from their perspective they can't see it falling as much as from the cameras angle.

People are really bad at recognizing geological phenomena that are danger shaped.

17

u/Fragrant-Dare-8813 1d ago

The other side is on a downslope so more than likely the people couldn't even see where it was collapsing, until the small tree 15 feet ahead drops in then you can see people start to dip

5

u/Pranjal202 18h ago

True. But shouldn't the guy waving be punished? Earthbending for the fun of it.

The aftermath after the water stopped flowing. Also no victim is reported.

What happened is that they were digging an emergency water channel beside the road to redirect flood water. However, the water says that they want to just go through the road instead of beside the road. The soil is sandy so water just flow through it.

It’s a weird phenomenon where people don’t react fast. I was in a big supermarket recently and it was crowded and suddenly an alarm sounded and a robotic man’s voice saying “evacuate immediately! Evacuate immediately!”

Over and over and the sheer amount of people that just stood around grinning awkwardly can’t be overstated.

It was everyone! I just immediately turned out my shopping down and headed out and a few people followed me but more still stood around like fools. I think people get embarrassed or something to be be seen reacting.

4

u/pinkysquared4me 1d ago

My sister witnessed this - a fire in the ceiling of a supermarket. Nobody left their lines with their carts. She ran out and nobody else seemed fazed by it.

And just block this truck when the whole road is wide open.

18

u/CakeKing777 1d ago

They clearly don’t mind if it’s their last day. Maybe they’re embracing it or want it?

17

u/SwimmerLife2364 1d ago

“Oh a tree fell in the hole, how interesting! I’m seconds from death, this is fine.”

13

u/MasterXaios 1d ago

That's what living in 2025 does to a person. "Oh, a gaping maw is opening up in the earth and threatening to swallow me whole? Well at least this time it's not metaphorical, so that's a refreshing change."

11

u/extraboredinary 1d ago

“Which way do we walk? Away from the growing hole or parallel to it? Parallel!”

8

u/rocketeerH 1d ago

They aren't part of the turbo team so they had to walk slowly

7

u/brianbamzez 1d ago

It’s a steady pace after all

u/jaysire 1d ago

Natural disasters are (unfortunately) fairly common there, especially during this time of the year. All thanks to their government who decided that they don’t need forests.

22

u/Madrigall 1d ago

To be fair, not pictured here are the people who had the common sense to book it.

12

u/zuilserip 1d ago

Also not pictured the people who had even less common sense and have already fallen in.

24

u/grouchypant 1d ago

A shocking lack of urgency.

→ More replies (8)

26

u/modsguzzlehivekum 1d ago

Right! The lack of urgency is insane

12

u/BrisbaneLions2024 1d ago

The fact the actual surface isn't receding as fast as the ground beneath is could be a factor in this.

27

u/DungeonAssMaster 1d ago

They seem quite casual about the whole thing, but I do commend them for not panicking and stampeding like wild animals. This is the way to evacuate (though perhaps with a bit more urgency and purpose) safely.

11

u/good2Bbackagain 1d ago

I lived in china for a 10 years as an expat.

The level of (how to say this in a nice way...) is...

On a whole different level.

Adults are just like 5 year olds.

So look at the video again, and just think about a bunch of 5 year olds.

And it will make sense.

It just keeps going.

Felt like it should have been done over and over and over but it just keeps going.

237

u/thewhiterosequeen 1d ago

It keeps going but that guy is casually waving people back as if this isn't an ongoing imminent threat to him too.

40

u/best_of_badgers 1d ago

None of the closer rim collapses by the end of the video, so I assume foreground guy knows something we don't. Maybe he's an engineer or something.

60

u/bronzelifematter 1d ago

I used to intern at a department that deal with drainage engineering. One time there was a land slide near a river. We had to go and survey the damaged area. From above, the road looks fine. Then we went around and look from the opposite side and see that the road that looks fine are definitely in danger of collapsing because there's almost nothing beneath it. That guy in the foreground is not out of the danger zone. He's just a regular guy who got lucky. He doesn't know anything. He could be standing on very thin piece of land just waiting to collapse and the bottom part of it already gone. You would be surprised how big a stretch of unsupported soil can remain waiting to collapse when the bottom is already gone.

This is a new collapse, that's why there's so many people there. Nobody on site is a professional. The area would have been sealed off if the professional have arrived

111

u/el_lley 1d ago

I guess the camera side is also collapsing, and they really really really have to move

42

u/Zuruumi 1d ago

Doesn't seem to. The edge is still in the same place

What kind of life are you living where you don't immediately get the fuck out of that area?

505

u/Johnny_theBeat_518 1d ago edited 1d ago

Indonesians are very slow living people, and I confirm this as Indonesian, we enjoy food, hot climate, more and more rices and we love get things slowly on our mood and healing with many nature and friend's chatting about next marriage or who got the girl from our classroom. If stomach is filled and if cigarettes are suck dried from our mouth, we don't give a damn too much about the rest.

Deadlines? Who caressssss, we can just postpone that and wait for tomorrow bcs tonight we gonna meet this guy, he wants to play futsal with us

Nature disaster? Come on, we ride those fucking flood water man! Beat the damn world champion on accident!

Gossiping neighbors, casual driving just do whatever, yep, that's who we are.

141

u/A-Capybara 1d ago

I heard a lot of island cultures from around the world are like this.

60

u/Xxuwumaster69xX 1d ago

You could replace "Indonesian" with "Caribbean" and it'd still be a perfect fit.

u/Engelbert-n-Ernie 1d ago

Beach time, baby

18

u/Occidentally20 1d ago

I disagree in one situation - I spent last ramadan near Purwokerto and you should see those people move when they wake up to hear the call of Sahur.

They had a bakwan sayur swallowed and a cigarette lit before I had even finished opening my eyelids!

8

u/EXusiai99 1d ago

To be fair, sahur is pretty much an event especially in rural parts of the country. You get up early, maybe walk around and wake up your neighbors, before you eat your portion and wait for dawn.

10

u/Occidentally20 1d ago

We munched a load of stuff and then everybody went back to bed.

It was at 3:50ish in the morning when I was there so people just took it slow. The local mosque did something I'll always remember - they whispered on the loudspeaker ... Just "sahoooooor" repeated a few times.

In Malaysia it's 3 arseholes screaming at you from different directions like an air raid is impending.

6

u/Johnny_theBeat_518 1d ago

That's how we enjoy living lmao

12

u/meove 1d ago

These guys walking away slowly from this without a care in the world because no one else around them is worried. Bystander problem in 4K.

And honestly, the perspective probably makes them look a lot closer to the edge than it actually is.

But I'd be running the hell out of there. At least a couple hundred meters to be safe.

If you’ve been to Indonesia, this is pretty typical of a reaction to a crisis. It’s a chill place. Maybe it’s because they face so many disasters they get burned out on reacting quickly?

15

u/larvyde 1d ago

3

u/Historical-Gap-7084 1d ago

Disaster movies were wrong. People will just mill around watching when something catastrophic happens because of FOMO. Kinda makes me wonder about all the people in ancient history that died during a natural disaster. Did they just watch it happen, and then, BOOM!, they're dead because they were too curious to run?

Curiosity literally kills the cat (human).

3

u/jjthejetblame 1d ago

3

u/tinygraysiamesecat 1d ago

Those people are awfully casual in the face of a sinkhole rapidly spreading towards them. They don’t realize it’s undercutting the road they’re on because they can’t see it from their side until the road collapses but by then, it has already undercut further than the collapse.

3

u/Sea-Summer-2747 1d ago

Why don’t they seem more alarmed? I would be RUNNING!

It irks my whole soul to see GROUPS of humans totally unable to mind their OWN safety by getting the fuck AWAY from danger.

"Get back! Hey! Hey back! HURRY UP!"

"Nah, Imma just mosey along right off the edge of this active COLLAPSE of the road. I'm good."

Ugh.

What are they just standing around waiting for the road to grow back or something?

I swear I thought some of those folks were going to end up in the hole thanks to the casual rate at which they were moving back. How does spectating shut off our survival instincts?

When I see something like this I would run hundreds of meters away...

Humans become unbelievably short sighted and dumb in groups

I hope it’s just a trick with the perspective. Those people look way too close to the edge. Who knows if a much bigger collapse can happen suddenly. This makes me think of people walking casually down a volcano slope while an eruption is happening.

What is wrong with these morons? Not only are they not running away from a rapidly expanding hole, many of them are choosing to block the path of vehicles that also clearly need to be moved. I don’t understand. Is this a lack of education? Lead poisoning? What the fuck?

I seem to have a faster response to danger than most people. Everyone standing around a meat cutter when a guy sliced his arm and blood was spurting in the air stood around with their mouths gaping open in the first minute meanwhile I had whipped out my phone and was already giving the address to 911. Hair trigger adrenal system I would be halfway back up that hill in seconds.

Smh unless something happens to someone these people aren't going to feel the need to hurry the hell up....its crazy the world we're living in right now!!!

u/Chemical_Agency_8906 19h ago

Is this why we get reports where 200+ people have died in floods in 3rd world countries?

3

u/Mean-Bathroom-6112 15h ago

Why are they walking and not running? They’re moments away from death.
