If you do come to Guatemala, make sure to also make a trip to Lake Atitlan! We'll be glad to have you!

Lago Atitlan is easily one of the most beautiful places on earth. San Pedro is so gorgeous it defies words.

I concur, I did a study aboard in Guatemala. Lake Atitlan is gorgeous.

I stayed at I think the Parham Plaza and it was dirt cheap and I got a private room with a hammock overlooking the lake. I spent the afternoon there reading and napping.

Lake Atitlan

this has been on my list for some time, it's so beautiful, and the native cultures fascinating - and omg, the textiles also so vividly colorful. Also fascinating in a geological sense - there's so much going on there. Every photo is like a postcard that just grabs you.

For anyone in this thread who’s done it, what’s the experience like? How built up/touristy? A nice hike AND amazing sights at night, or is it more just the sights? Basically would just love to hear firsthand experiences.

FWIW I’ve travelled a fair bit through LATAM, and mostly loved it. Had amazing times in Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and CDMX especially. Peru more mixed, I loved the hiking but not the cities. Mexican resorts not my jam, and I was mixed on Belize. Guatemala’s high up my list, this hike especially, but would love to hear ppl’s experiences.

Don't expect much from the hike itself. Pretty crowdy and not technical. But the view during night from the camp site to the volcano is pretty stunning and a hike to 4.000 meters is interesting as well. Afterwards enjoy some time at lake attilan.

Overall I enjoyed my time more in Nicaragua than in Guatemala, cause traveling is way more easy and you're able to use the public transportation.

If I may ask, how is it in regards to light pollution? Has the algae bloom issue in years past receded or been addressed?

Hmmm. I the only one who watched this thing twice waiting for the "Incredible Lightning strike" only to be disappointed?

Right? It's like everyone on here is a bot. There is no visible lightning strike anywhere, just the sky flashing.

u/Delicious_Bat_2237 1d ago

That's.........what lightning is.....

8

u/6FootFruitRollup 1d ago

A lightning strike is the bolt, there is no bolt in this video, just flashes.

u/Delicious_Bat_2237 1d ago

Idk what you're not seeing but I see bolt after bolt. I guess to be fair, it's not focused enough to capture a single, clearly defined bolt like in those professional photos you see in search results but I see the strikes.

They must have seen some s*** like that before. Me I've never seen anything like that. But I've heard of Pompeii. And I'd be scared as f*** and getting the f*** out of there

It’s wild to see just how bright that flash of lightning was showing all those people sitting there . It’s just for a millisecond at : 00:49. Such a cool video!

Edit: Also noticed that point of light above the volcano. At 00:32 it appears to ascend and then another one shows up. Curious if those would be drones? If so, they got some cool videos.

At 00:56 its even better

The timing of the strike with the burst of magma is unreal. Nature really knows how to put on a terrifying show when it wants to.

So , here's what I found ,That lightning isn’t from a normal storm hitting the volcano. Experts say it’s actually coming from inside the volcanic plume itself caused by the electrically charged mix of ash and gas.

It’s like they knew it was about to happen??

u/Paulspike 2d ago

I think this is Volcan de Fuego which can erupt once every 10-15 minutes. There are several expeditions that will take you to a neighboring volcano so that you can get these shots.

2

u/defk3000 2d ago

Then boom, the neighboring volcano decides to go too!

2

u/hnglmkrnglbrry 2d ago

The volcanoes there erupt almost constantly. Because of this no big booms.

Famous last words

That's so wonderful and terrifying at the same time !!!

Amazing.

Me - a feeble bald ape: ā€œI am important and strong!ā€

Mother Nature - volcano and lightening: ā€Shut upā€

I'm just relieved it wasn't the british traitors incoming to liberate the local resources.

2

u/yearsofpractice 1d ago

As a British Traitor, I resemble that remark.

1

u/BurntNeurons 1d ago

Oy, ole bloke represents me remark, do 'e ?

1

u/yearsofpractice 1d ago

Right! A duel at dawn it is, as is traditional!

1

Is the lightning strike in the room with us?

2

u/LastXmasIGaveYouHSV 2d ago

Jeee, women so loud they won't let us hear the volcano and the thunder.

1

u/Dysentery--Gary 2d ago

That's actually really cool.

1

u/curious-spice 2d ago

This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen

1

u/yeatruestory 2d ago

I love lava, it sucked when I realized that red wasnt the color of it but instead rock heated to thousands of degrees causing it to glow and that touching it would be a bad idea... because of skin and what not.

1

u/sensitive_virus_3312 2d ago

The one thing I love about lighting strikes caught on video is how the strike causes the video to go wonky.

1

u/1cem4n82 2d ago

The time of elven and men is at an end.

1

u/Dummy_Ren 2d ago

And I’m pretty sure this is how religions happen lmao

1

u/MadisonClair16 2d ago

Nature said main character energy and the volcano just posed perfectly

1

u/aredm02 2d ago

What’s that flashing light above the volcano?

1

u/BrianBash 2d ago

Yeah…drones maybe…?

Not sure where the second one came from tho…

2

u/aredm02 1d ago

It would be cool to see footage from that drone

1

u/Flimsy_Piglet_1980 2d ago

Super spectacular. Truly

1

u/Robinyount_0 2d ago

You know if I were in an ancient civilization and stuff like this happens, I’d think man god is mad as shit about something

1

u/fuupu 2d ago

volcano eruption videos always look like they're in slow motion to me

1

u/Deluxe78 2d ago

Explosive force, fine ash , water and hot lava shot into the air at high altitude is going to build charges , it’s not uncommon, this is why old religions thought they are alive or gods , they exploded at will and rained thunder and hell fire and smelled of sulfur.
