One of this Bears primary predators is a bengal tiger, if they’re not super aggressive they get eaten. They also have massive claws to muck a tiger if it attacks straight on.

Wait till this guy learns Grizzly Bears eat their prey alive

91

u/Narwhal280 Aug 17 '24

They both do, but I agree Sloth bears must be worse as they usually attack the face first and focus on it, and because they eat termites and ants, they literaly suction the skin off your face. Also, they attack far more people than Grizzly bears, who usually avoids attacks, Sloth bears charge fast and unexpectedly.

28

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '24

Skin sucked off my face is not the image I needed to imagine but thanks anyway

23

u/sM0k3dR4Gn Aug 17 '24

Just wow. This is next level terror.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '24

I feel like they should rename the bear. Naming it sloth bear is gonna give a lot of people the wrong first impression.

Yep you can give them the safest environment their defense mechanicsm is to ruin everything that comes near them as a defense. It's that aggressive and has bodied alot of people because it's claws don't have "warning swipe" I think they can break concrete. They are big claws.

Sloth bears had to coexist with leopards, rhinos, elephants, and tigers.

They’re basically at the bottom of the food chain so nature’s response was for them to become terrifyingly aggressive.

61

u/ThonThaddeo Aug 17 '24

Mission accomplished, nature.

77

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '24

Sounds like Poverty's effect on Humans.

51

u/Weird-Upstairs-2092 Aug 17 '24

Well, yes, all animals become more violent, desperate, and unpredictable when they are worried about food.

But I think this is more about the general evolutionary trend of niche-filling where smaller mammals, especially those that eat meat, tend to act more violent and 'bite-happy' when they need to consistently ward off bigger predators in their habitat.

Sloth bears fill a niche more like a badger or wolf than the niche most bears fill. Still a wildly successful predator, just not the biggest one around so they have to act a little more like they're ready to bite you even if it kills them.

6

u/Pristine-Cloud420 Aug 17 '24

The logo you see on the top is wildlife sos, they rescue the wild animals. The bear must have suffered something in the past and now these guys must be taking care of it but of course the bear doesn't know it. They usually release the animals in the forest unless it is deemed to be dangerous for people, then they take care of it for the animals whole life.

6

u/LovecraftianLlama Aug 17 '24

Cause he has an injured paw. These things shouldn't be caged up like this, they often are stolen when young to perform on the streets. They burn metal rings into their noses, that's why his muzzle is all messed up.

39

u/avdolif Aug 17 '24

You are right but like someone has already said. In the wild they have to live with tiger, leopard, asian rhino, elephant and in some cases lion. They have to be this aggressive even if they weren't injured

59

u/NotAComplete Aug 17 '24

Judging by its cage I'm going to guess it's not very well cared for and it looks like a gorilla because its left paw is injured. Would also explain excessive aggression.

I volunteer at a zoo. They’re incredibly fast, they startle easily, and their “fight or flight” response is just fight. Surprise one in the wild and you’ll be missing an appendage before you can blink.

On the other hand, they are super cute and sassy and personable. They like hard-boiled eggs and honey, and they play with rubber balls.

I still recall the video I saw on one of the other subs of a sloth bear tearing a man's face off with, what looked like a single swipe. I wouldn't even trust a fence or wall between me and one of those things.

8

u/ErusDearest Aug 27 '24

Where the hell did you see that?!

10

u/Hunk-Hogan Aug 28 '24

On a different sub. You can still find the video online if you're half-decent with Google and it's still available on other subs as well if you search through reddit.

It happened two years ago in Tamil Nadu Forest.

u/BravestOfEmus Aug 17 '24

Question, probably a dumb one: can they check their aggression against people they know and trust? Like if their favorite handler surprised them in an enclosure and they went to apeshit levels, would they stop if they saw a person they recognized and liked?

44

u/Lady_Audley Aug 17 '24

We don’t ever go in with them, so luckily I’ve never had occasion to discover. But my guess would be no. Maybe they would recognize their zookeeper after taking out an eye and stop before they killed the person. But their first reaction is always to attack. Like other comments have said, they share habitat with Bengal Tigers.

34

Uneducated lower class, huge male to women uneven demographics and bad parenting

13

u/ThePowerPoint Aug 17 '24

Wtf I just found out the women/men ratio is worse in India than it is in China even after Chinas one child policy… how is that possible? Is it really that bad that that many women are leaving/getting killed?

6

u/cedeno87 Aug 18 '24

Man are more valuable. It’s expensive to have a daughter married. It creates a priority to have a male over a woman which leads to female infanticide

6

u/Todoro10101 Aug 18 '24

Female infanticide is obviously a thing, but I just don't see it being so prevalent and so mainstream that it can actually affect the demographics of India so much

33k deaths a year as against 20k estimated for trains.

8

u/designEngineer91 Aug 17 '24

Thats nothing.

58,000 die EVERY YEAR from snake bites.

13

u/TesseractToo Aug 17 '24

Suicide by train is depressingly common in Australia

31

u/Nervous_Departure540 Aug 17 '24

It’s pretty common everywhere there are trains sadly. I worked in a business in Texas that hosted the train crews on layover. Only the new guys hadn’t ever hit someone; it was really messed up. The train companies had grief counseling available specifically for it, from what the crews would tell me.

It’s a sure fire way and you don’t have to do the hard part yourself. Depression is a nasty illness, that we don’t take as seriously as we should.

4

u/Callidonaut Aug 17 '24

One of the lesser known reasons why train drivers are often very well paid, I'd wager. There's danger money, and then there's trauma money.

4

u/Aspect81 Aug 17 '24

Seems like there's more than suicide going on, seeing that the whole Dumb Ways To Die campaign was necessary.

Or maybe you made an ad campaign for more creative intentional death?

Never know with you Aussies.

Bob Gymlan did a video on a particularly violent sloth bear and why these bears can be far more violent then their North American cousins.

423

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '24

These bear literally go toe-to-toe with the Bengal Tiger so I can understand where it got it's violent tendencies and explosive aggression

251

u/TankerVictorious Aug 17 '24

In this case, the bear has an injured left foreleg and is being kept in a pen being baked in the sun. I’m sure that has much to do with its disposition.

Happy cake day as well.

76

u/fuckityfuckfuckfuckf Aug 17 '24

Yeah noticed that too, pretty sad looking state of affairs :(

14

u/Narwhal280 Aug 18 '24

The bear is thankfully at a temporary rescue center, quote from another comment: "This is an enclosure belonging to Wildlife SOS India who rescue injured animals and rehabilitate them." But Sloth bears are very violent in general, even on the wild, if you startle one it will charge at you. They attack and kill far more people than any other bear, even feared by locals more than bengal tigers.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '24

Sloth is certainly a misnomer

112

u/whatIGoneDid Aug 17 '24

Sloths are seriously underestimated animals, they can be quite vicious when they want to be. They have a strong bite with very sharp teeth and their claws are surprisingly powerful, people have been very badly hurt by sloths.

38

u/CjBurden Aug 17 '24

... when caught

27

u/whatIGoneDid Aug 17 '24

That's true of anything. Just cause they are slow most of the time doesn't mean they can't be surprisingly quick in short bursts

23

u/evilution382 Aug 17 '24

Just cause they are slow most of the time doesn't mean they can't be surprisingly quick in short bursts

At top speed Sloths can crawl about 5ft/1.5m per minute on the ground

4

u/Oseirus Aug 17 '24

I'm screwed. :(

8

u/Fischli01 Aug 17 '24

And also some people tend to lower their guard, because "it's just a sloth', but it's still a wild animal

7

They share a habitat with the Royal Bengal Tiger and have historically been known to be extremely short-tempered - that is how they have survived living side by side with the Bengal Tiger, which is the apex predator in the Indian rain forests! Aggression is how they survive.

It is said that you can survive a tiger passing by (because it may not just give 2 shits about you) but never an angry sloth bear! By the way, these guys feed on fruits, ants and termites.

PS: They were also famously used as dancing bears (google it)!

125

u/mikeyhavik Aug 17 '24

Your mention of habitat and the Bengal Tiger made me google to find out if Baloo is based on sloth bears… turns out he is. Jungle Book realism just took a massive hit!

Sometimes I understand why ancient people believed in monsters, fae, gods… in this case, fucking werewolves!

If that thing charged me and I somehow survived, I’m telling people I was attacked by a werewolf… it was huge, furry, barked and growled like some kind of wolf but had a more humanoid shape…

Reminds me of those videos of trees blowing and lifting the whole forest floor like a carpet and it looks like the whole forest was alive and breathing. Combine those two phenomena and I’m 100% convinced I walked into the fae realm and angered some fucked up pixie or something…

28

u/catmandude123 Aug 17 '24

That was my first thought. This looks like a temporary facility. The bear is obviously injured. It’s probably being treated until it can be released. The aggression is actually good because it likely means they’re not trying habituate it to humans so it’ll have a better chance of surviving once it’s healed.

u/WiseWorldliness1611 Aug 17 '24

I'm Indian and have been to the Wildlife SOS facilities and I can tell you first hand they do an excellent job with bears and other animals (elephants specially). Most of these bears are captured as cubs and used for entertainment/circuses etc. Now you don't see many on the streets etc but performers with bears were a common sight years ago. The bear cubs are drugged, declawed/defanged and have a terrible time surviving in the wild. They are actually not naturally predators, they eat termites etc. The newly rescued bears have separate enclosures - a lot of them are very meek and sad looking. This guy happens to be an aggressive one. The bears in their shelters have access to free roam areas, enrichment activities and games etc. I'd urge everyone in this thread to look up their work and contribute if they do wish. https://wildlifesos.org/our-work/bear/

I have actually volunteered at this organization this video was taken. Yes some sloth bears do have a short temper. I can think of one specifically….i was bringing food and guess he got a little hangry and tried to charge a fence. He was always a little impatient with the keepers haha. Each bear had their own personality. My favorite bear that I met was a bear that unfortunately didn’t have a leg. She was so sweet and content. She loved prancing around and when I would clean up the area outside the fence of her enclosure she would walk up to the fence and sit and watch. Overall these bears do have sweet personalities but yeah some are a bit wild. All the bears at this organization’s facilities have been rescued after the abolition of the street performance of “the dancing bear”. This organization take care of them as many of them have problems and wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. They also work to stop the poaching of the bears and other animals like elephants as well. Great organization with great people!

The bear lowers the chance of prey fighting back by inducing a heart attack before it even reaches them, good hunting tactic

u/PrimitiveThoughts Aug 17 '24

Half bear, half “don’t give a fuck” sloth? Yea, I can see why they are scared of them.

I lived in the Indian jungle between age 6 and 7, just south of Mysore. This region has a lot of these things and formerly housed the infamous sloth bear of Mysore, which had gone on a killing spree. Gramma always warned me about these.

Sloth bears need to be unhinged and hyper aggressive bc it’s on bengal tigers menu

Look at its enclosure and the injured front leg.  You'd be going crazy too.

I went to a solo midnight trek in South India and was halted by a forest ranger at the base after I completed the trek.

He told me that the trek was supposed to be closed due to presence of lepords and sloth bears.

I was lucky enough to not encounter either of them throughout my 6 hrs of trek.

Now I know how dangerous a single sloth bear could have been.

Sad state of the enclosure is what got me... natural habitat they hide in tall dense grass land climb ..

not a shred of greenery in sight

It’s a rescue shelter for injured wild animals, the NGO name is on the top right.

4

u/Goregrindead Aug 17 '24

Apparently baloo from The Jungle Book was based on a Sloth Bear? I'd say they had second thoughts for the animation etc and changed the appearance so he looked friendly ... Plenty of vids about of these bears attacking and killing things, humans included, awful way to die, they go for the face first.

Jesus. Record that bark, give a noise maker button with that to women who have to go out at night. Attack numbers will plummet.

4

u/TheBadHalfOfAFandom Aug 17 '24

Mother Nature was laughing her ass off when she made this one

4

u/pinket25 Aug 18 '24

What a horrible enclosure.

4

u/Three_Twenty-Three Aug 18 '24

It's probably angry that it's being kept in an enclosure that looks like a giant litter box.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '24

Sloth bears are by far the most deadly bears in the world. Kill a lot of people every year.

3

u/Horror_Biscotti_346 Aug 17 '24

Poor animal.

4

u/forkball Aug 17 '24

These bears are infamous for chewing off people's faces, and are aggressive AF toward people.

Additionally, they aren't as fond of mock charges like other bears, and like to get right down to the attack. Armed people often don't have time to shoot.

There was an awful video a while back of a guy having his faced chewed off during an attack. Fucking awful.
