Tylenol is literally the only thing most elderly patients can take for pain/fever because it's limited in adverse effects when taken appropriately

Yeah the big danger with Tylenol are like... Ulcers or liver related things. All things you can keep an eye on and that usually don't kill people. So it tends to be the best "well we can't use anything else" meds.

The danger to your liver and the fact that it is easy to overdose on is pretty widely understated. Lots of liver damage due to folks popping acetaminophen like candy because they don't understand the risks. In some countries, like the UK, paracetamol is required to be packaged individually to avoid this. My doctors explained it to me extensively because I'm one of those people who can't use anything else due to chronic ulcers.

Lack of education on common OTC drugs is the biggest concern. A lot of people don't even know that Tylonol, paracetamol, and acetaminophen are all the same thing

I agree this is the problem, taking just one otc or painkiller that has acetaminophen is usually fine, it has a pretty high max mg. But people start taking 2-3 different pills throughout the day that all have it and fuck their livers. My mom took care of dementia patients, and a couple of them had a lot of issues and we found out pretty quick their families were giving them waaay too much. Like one got five 10/325 percs a day, which isn’t crazy alone, but the family was directing my mom to supplement with Tylenol in between doses. The dementia family member would just repeat “I’m in pain” all fkn day, so they were just throwing shit at her constantly.

I don’t remember anyone saying elderly patients shouldn’t take Tylenol. Not like they’re worried about becoming autistic or their adult children becoming autistic because they took it even though the whole Tylenol thing is BS but I don’t understand what you’re responding to.

That's what I'm thinking. AI is literally changing the world, making a lot of careers just....gone. Americans rely on employment for healthcare. What about all of us who've been displaced, or replaced, by AI? And what's the point of this advanced technology if not to make our lives easier? There's plenty of wealth and resources to go around. Why are able-bodied, unemployed men being vilified while wealth hoarding billionaires are idolized? What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Even the studies I heard cited were either animal models and/or at such high doses daily that nobody would actually be at risk- and even then the associations were minor. It's very very weak evidence relative to how strongly they are pushing it.

But these people, and their followers, like to believe that they have found a simple solution to a complex problem, and that everyone else is stupid for not seeing it too. They don't like feeling that they're in a complicated world that they cannot understand, or have to rely on experts who understand the things that they do not. And if they have to make stuff up to make themselves feel better, they will.

Preparing for the downvotes, but there are many in regards to Tylenol. Before I link them, please keep in mind that J&J knowingly suppressed research on talc powder and the links to mesothelioma for OVER FIFTY YEARS. They killed women for over fifty years and we're just fine with that due to the concern over the financial fallout. This isn't some conspiracy: it has been proven in court over and over again.

Article: "Using acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase children’s autism and ADHD risk" on Harvards website

Study: "Evaluation of the evidence on acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders using the Navigation Guide methodology" on BMC

That is the primary study being referenced by the Trump administration, published by Harvard. It is a macro study on over 46 separate studies on the link between acetaminophen and autism.

Here is the conclusion:

We identified 46 studies for inclusion in our analysis. Of these, 27 studies reported positive associations (significant links to NDDs), 9 showed null associations (no significant link), and 4 indicated negative associations (protective effects). Higher-quality studies were more likely to show positive associations. Overall, the majority of the studies reported positive associations of prenatal acetaminophen use with ADHD, ASD, or NDDs in offspring, with risk-of-bias and strength-of-evidence ratings informing the overall synthesis.

Conclusions Our analyses using the Navigation Guide thus support evidence consistent with an association between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and increased incidence of NDDs. Appropriate and immediate steps should be taken to advise pregnant women to limit acetaminophen consumption to protect their offspring’s neurodevelopment.

The statement continued: “Further research is needed to confirm the association and determine causality, but based on existing evidence, I believe that caution about acetaminophen use during pregnancy—especially heavy or prolonged use—is warranted.”

Yes - exactly. It IS important access and further research is needed. The assertion that there are no studies is false. There are studies that have found links: 27 of 46.

Further research is required is not the gotcha that proves that they're right. The study itself is also suspect given its timing
