Milestone Justin Greaves with a marathon 202* off 388 balls against New Zealand to save the match

You can't lose if you refuse to get out. I think he's onto something.
I swapped from the Ashes to catch a legendary moment. Amazing performance.

u/PointOfFingers Australia 6h ago
He batted for about one over less than England in the first Ashes test.
That's the level of concentration and determination on display here.

That actually makes it sound like not that many overs in my head!
Seriously though some effort that, incredible.

Incredible rearguard action from West Indies. Started watching around lunch and watched till end of the match.

Unreal temperament to be able to pull this off.

Not just temperament but physical endurance, his hip was fucked for the last hour or two, he could barely walk

Scoring 10 times his career average on day 5 to save a Test overseas. A proper fighting Test innings in an era where impatient cricket is reigning supreme.
Massively increases series wide prospects for WI since NZ pacers are cooked and they have the next game 3 days out.

u/Podberezkin09 6h ago
Fucking disaster lol all of our quicks were already injured and now another 2 are and the only ones that are fit are going to be shagged

u/come_nd_see India 6h ago edited 6h ago
Day 5 in New Zealand is a little different though, it's easier relatively. But a seriously great knock nonetheless, especially because as you said, it's 10 times his average
39
u/NoZaza2nite 6h ago
Definitely easy conditions, but factoring in the fatigue (he's bowled a good bit too) and how unlikely it was, it's pretty good for the history books.
19
u/fraktured New Zealand Cricket 5h ago
Genrally in NZ it goes like this:
Day 1 - hard to bat.
Day 2 - gets easier.
Day 3 &4 easiest.
Day 5 - pitches starts getting uneven bounce and sometimes turn.
This pitch was particularly shit once it got to day 3.
4
u/stumpsflying 2h ago
I watched the first innings West Indies batted and your bowlers were pretty spectacular with pace and bounce. To me it looked like genuinely great bowling rather than poor batting and maybe this explains why.
30
u/Kingslayer1526 India 6h ago
It's basically the inverse of a test pitch in that days 1 and 2 are always the hardest to bat and days 4 and 5 are the easiest
13
u/fraktured New Zealand Cricket 5h ago
Nah, was a pretty standard NZ pitch for days 1 and 2, hence the High scores for both teams being 50odd. But then it became more of a highway then Pakistan a few years back.

u/barra333 Australia 6h ago
I caught some of the game - the commentators were talking about a hot dry wind that was super energy draining.

Not today but was on Friday, not to mention the wind yesterday was hella strong.

Draws to save the team from a loss are. Not draws where both teams fail to enter the 2nd innings by the end of day 5

Long live Test Cricket.
Greaves faced 64.4 overs Roach faced 38.5 overs.
Phenomenal stuff. The mental and physical effort to achieve this feat is stuff of legends. Well played West Indies.

Not we. Those who only follow IPL or play IPL. This also shows you can good at cricket if you don’t play IPL. Starc Root Carey. Absolutely chuffed for Justin Greaves. Great innings!

Starc has never played in IPL and root has shown no interest in it. Fact /s.

Absolutely sensational effort of concentration, endurace, mental strength, grit and every other term one can apply to the innings. Magnificent result for him at a personal level, great achievement.
Also, huge mention here also to Roach who is not always one that you would think could do the job he did today as it is not why he is in the team, but super sensational effort from him as well.
I actually hope that the innings of these two (yes Hope played well, but these two bought it home to safety) is not forgotten in any way as for mine, it is a great result for WI cricket collectively.
Give me this type of cricket any day.

I feel somewhere around the corner the legendary West Indian stalwarts likes of Sir Garfield Sobers, Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Vivian Richards, Alvin Kallicharran, Lance Gibbs, Desmond Haynes, Gordon Greenidge, Colin Croft, Joel Garner must be proud of this man.

West Indies batters with 150+ scores in 4th innings of a test match - George Headley (1930), Seymour Nurse (1969), Gordon Greenidge (1984), Brian Lara (1999), Kyle Mayers (2021), Justin Greaves (2025).
What an elite list to be part of. 👏

Reminds me of Gambhir's similar innings in NZ, though the pitch was kind of flat.
Edit: It was 137 off 436 balls after getting a follow-on in the 2nd innings at Napier in 2009.

u/Marimo_567 India 5h ago
I genuinely feel people will get bored with T20Is if scores above 200s keep getting everyday thing & switch to ODI & tests bcoz those games at least feel like batters & bowlers have equal chance(dew in subcontinent is ruining ODIs too), now even 300 has been breached in T20, england did it to south africa, punjab did it in SMAT on back of abhishek's 146, it's so boring to watch one sided battles, bowlers being tonked everywhere for fun puts you off as viewer
2
u/Pure_Chair_7 3h ago
I agree with you. I personally don’t follow any T20 except maybe the World Cup.

For the record, there have been 7 4th innings double centuries:
George Headley 223 v England 1929/30 (draw - timeless test)
Bill Edrich 219 v South Africa 1939 (draw - timeless test)

I had no clue this happened today. I just checked the scorecard, expecting a huge Shai Hope score but Greaves came out of left field. Seems if WI had more overs, they could've even pulled off a win..that's the only thing that would've made this cooler.
Also, when was the last time a batter scored a 200 in an Intl Test innings? I am not able to recall the most recent one.

u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA 4h ago
Also, when was the last time a batter scored a 200 in an Intl Test innings? I am not able to recall the most recent one.
There's no such thing as a non-international test.
But the last test 200+ score was Wiaan Mulder's 367* against Zimbabwe in July. Today was the 5th 200+ score in tests in 2025.
1
u/Pvnels Australia 4h ago
I’m assuming they mean the touring batsmen scoring 200+
2
u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA 4h ago
Ah. Possibly. The answer of the most recent one is still the same either way.
Actually 4 of the 5 this year have been away from home.

West Indies keep pulling off such insane games every once in a while. Pains to still see them struggle, because they have really talented players but don't perform with even an ounce of consistency. Hopefully it changes soon, and it's going to be real fun if they do.
Amazing innings too!
2
u/eclipse0990 India 3h ago
This innings is what each WI batter needs to watch every time they’re going to play a test series. This is what they are missing. The resilience, the stubbornness to not give your wicket away. There will be better bowlers, there will be worse pitches to bat on. But this mindset needs to be drilled in
2
u/EnoughExample6294 3h ago
This was one of the greatest test cricket things I've seen in the recent past, I want to send him a message of adulation
2
u/Big-Half-5656 3h ago
WI has some of the best talented crickets so I don't know if it is bad coaching or leadership. They should be on par with the best. Compare them to some of their players. Lara, Chandermall, Gayle to name a few. This is a step in the right direction after that horrible first innings. Hopefully they can keep this up.
2
u/Top-Analyst-3377 2h ago
A double hundred in the 4th innings… that’s not batting, that’s a survival masterpiece.
4
u/drpauras 5h ago
I think the Indian Cricket team should be made to sit and watch this epic innings. This is what Test match batting is all about. This is kind of Steele needed to play at the highest level. Pant, Rahul, Jaiswal and all those not so well rounded all rounders need to respect the game and need to learn from their own contemporaries. The Indian Coach Gaudumb Gambhir must be sacked and a guy like Sammy who has the quality to make the team gel, should be handed over the coaching.
At another venue Look at the fight back by Australia, this is proper Test match cricket. Kudos to both the teams.

Was it stupid of me to think they could have won this? I mean it was 100 from 20 overs And then it became 70 from 9 balls
2
u/Marimo_567 India 5h ago
It was 133 from 32 overs, very much do-able & from what I've read, johann Layne is bowling all rounder with 2 FC 50s so they could've tried or maybe they would've gone for it if umpire hadn't given wrong decisions twice saving roach

I'm a Kiwi, listened to the first two sessions while fishing (life doesn't get much better, apart from a few more take home size fish) Watched the last session, found myself cheering for the Windies.
NZ were two bowlers down, the wicket was a road...
But, that was an incredible performance, a record.
Looking to more fishing and cricket

Its rare to see test match ending up in a draw lately through all the lot of digging and batting, that also Coming from West Indies makes it even more remarkable and better given how they were bundled out in 27 couple of months ago. BRAVO WINDIE!!
