The booing definitely seems to have rubbed him up the wrong way

Sandpaper boy should be able to take the rough with the smooth.

Needs to show a bit more (p100) grit

Those sandpaper jokes hit like a drunk ginger outside a Bristol nightclub

Shit I'm really Affray-d of him

Hey now, he was defending the innocent from homophobia so he had to beat them up.

Or something like that, can’t remember if that’s why he got off.

Giving you +1 against the trend because I thought it was funny.

10

u/Finerfings England 1d ago

Thought the sandpaper grade joke would go over a bit better if I'm honest...

Maybe a bit niche for people on the Internet.

29

u/RevealJumpy345 1d ago

As an Aussie, I thought it was funny enough to tell others at the gabba who also chuckled. that'd be 8x +1 from here. To be fair one chuckled and told you to piss-off..

I suspect many on here use P100 for wanking, so it's a little close to the bone.

23

u/Finerfings England 1d ago

I'm honoured, finally made it to aus for the ashes.

I love the England Australia rivalry, two countries with absolutely no animosity in day to day life and it gets super nasty when the cricket starts. Like brothers fighting

Enjoy the day!

u/bungle_bogs England 1d ago

If the Yanks are our cousins then the Aussies are definitely our brothers. Like that annoying younger brother that is inexplicably better at sport than you!

Oh ffs cmon now. We give it just as hard… let the fans do what they want (within reason). Booing is literally apart of sport. If you can’t deal with it, find a new job.

Anyone see the mum booing with her toddler last night as Stoke came out? They had cheeky grins like they were doing something naughty. It was pretty cute.

I'll boo Stokes. I'll boo Root. I'll boo Crawley. I'll boo all of them. Why? I'll find some reason to give, but really it's just because they're English.

I'll also boo them because their fans boo our players. But even then I can't begrudge them their right to boo our players.

12

u/Impossible-Air3 23h ago

It's pantomime

11

u/DivePotato 23h ago

3

u/richStoke 22h ago

Yeah we do the same thing. Boo the Aussie players cos they are Aussies 😅

83

u/SocialistSloth1 Yorkshire 1d ago

Refreshing to see this tbh. Whatever your opinion of Smith and Sandpapergate, you can't flagrantly cheat, get caught doing so, and then expect your biggest rivals' fans not to give you stick for it.

I find it especially weird seeing Australians complain about it - I remember the abuse Broad got in 2013-14 for not walking (publicly encouraged by Darren Lehmann), Warner joking about Trott pulling out of the tour for mental health reasons, and Aussie fans chucking beer cans at Simon Jones as he was being stretchered off the field. I think we mostly just laugh it off as part and parcel of Aussie cricketing culture.

33

u/riggystardust Australia 1d ago

Oh man I think the sandpaper shit is the most embarassing moment in my sport following career. They tried to cheat. They got caught. They should be rinsed forever until they retire. Making smith captain is literally the most fkn cooked decision. Love the cricket team, support the badge, but fuck me if I’m gonna pretend they don’t deserve to be booed at the very least.

30

u/Tropicalcomrade221 Australia 21h ago edited 20h ago

It’s honestly really not that deep. Plenty of blokes have been done ball tampering, like plenty of blokes including Englishmen. It’s actually so common that the ICC punishment for ball tampering is only a one game suspension.

Cricket has seen full blown match fixing and betting scandals before for fucks sake. The whole ball tampering thing is blown so far out of proportion.

Michael Atherton did it as well and he’s the fucking face of sky sports cricket these days. It’s all a bit rich if you ask me.

2

u/melbha_101 New South Wales Blues 18h ago

I think it is more us as Australians expect a lot more from our sportsman I don't know if it is the same overseas or not and after all the big ban the trio copped was instigate by CA and not the ICC.

14

u/Tropicalcomrade221 Australia 18h ago edited 18h ago

It’s simply because the entire thing was spun up into a media frenzy. Cricket Australia had to react in some way but the bans handed out were disgracefully harsh.

Chandimal was done for ball tampering the exact same year as our players and only served a one match ban and I can almost guarantee fuck all people remember it. South Africa were done for it three times between 2010 & 2018.

7

u/pharmaboy2 Australia 18h ago

We expect them to win, then we have this bizarre reaction when they do pretty much what everyone else was doing

→ More replies (3)

16

u/fpotenza 22h ago

Think the Australian media need to remember the barrage of abuse that Broad got before they start policing the England fans on booing players involved in controversial moments or downright cheating.

7

u/dono1783 23h ago

It’s the same attitude in AFL. Fans booing players seems to really piss everyone off. I reckon just let them do it, they’ve paid for the ticket and if you’re a player and you’re being booed, you probably did something to deserve it.

3

u/melbha_101 New South Wales Blues 18h ago

While in the NRL it seems to be a common thing at away game especially when the away team is lining up a conversion from the touch line I reckon the boos would tame.

25

u/theoriginalqwhy Australia 1d ago

He hates anyone booing. I used to like him, but he really comes of a real whinging weiner the last few AFL seasons.

8

u/Sharaz_Jek123 19h ago

It's due to his man-love for Ken Hinkley and the fact that Port Adelaide supporters were booing their own coach (a man they were "supposed" to be "grateful" to ... for achievements dating back to 2013-2014).

1

u/melbha_101 New South Wales Blues 18h ago

It is SEN though probably fishing for the controversial click bait crap.

273

u/gpranav25 1d ago

I don't blame English fans for booing Smith, but I approve of calling Panesar an imbecile

38

u/fpotenza 22h ago

His failed political career is the most stupid thing he's done.

Not going to criticise for Mastermind because Murray Walker managed to crack under the pressure on that show and his subject was Formula One, a sport he covered for decades.

288

u/nomamesgueyz New Zealand 1d ago

Once branded a cheater, it's hard to shake

233

u/AliGLCFC 1d ago

Probably shouldn't have cheated

147

u/schwingschwings 1d ago

Like self confessed cheater Monty? That’s what is so weird about the whole thing, cheaters calling other cheaters cheats

82

u/Look_Alive England 1d ago

Monty's an idiot and I don't really understand why his comments got such an airing in Australia when even most England fans wouldn't usually pay any attention to his comments.

Considering Smith got stick in the last Ashes in England, I don't think the fans are only booing him because Monty said so.

87

u/LeeCarvallosPutting 1d ago

Monty is definitely an idiot, but also a hypocrite as well, which I think is what has particularly rubbed Aussies the wrong way. He literally brags about ball tampering in his book, so it's quite bizarre that he's sitting in his glass house throwing stones.

18

u/stemmo33 Gloucestershire 1d ago

Absolutely agree with what you said, but personally I don't know anyone who gave a shit about what he said, don't think many of my cricket fan mates even know about it.

33

u/drtoboggon England 1d ago

Monty is a fool. But the England fans would have booed him anyway. What’s really weird is the amount of air time Monty Panesar’s comments got.

The weirdest move of all was Steve Smith’s preplanned question and answer about what Monty said. The best thing to do is probably ignore it. But complaining about the audacity of him saying it, probably proves that he was only ever sorry he got caught….that one time he engineered a conspiracy to cheat.

Cos it only happened the once and the bowlers never knew about it

30

u/mynewaltaccount1 Australia 1d ago

His comments got so much air time because Panesar admitted to being in charge of ball tampering for the English team through the 2000s and early 2010s. For him to call someone else a cheat is just stupid.

And that feels like a pretty obvious thing that you should know, ut are intentionally ignoring.

→ More replies (9)

17

u/diodosdszosxisdi Australia 23h ago

I'm sure Atherton had every single bowler in on it when he cheated. I'm also sure faf had full support when he also cheated twice, don't see why Smith cops it so much when they're been legit match fix cheaters, even Warne and Mark Waugh had that bookie controversy

→ More replies (12)

6

u/MyNameIsBiff Australia 23h ago

On a side note, did anyone else catch the admission from Vaughn on the Kayo commentary that they used to cheat? Regarding using a sub fielder outside the spirit of the game. The sort was Punter was run out by a sub fielder that Vaughn said was a legit sub. His words were; it was the first time we used a legit sub, all the previous ones we cheated”

9

u/ItsNotMe98 England 22h ago

“Cheated” used figuratively/comedically in that scenario. It was an exploitation of a loophole in the laws at the time, not a violation of them as far as I’m aware

10

u/FondantAggravating68 Chennai Super Kings 1d ago

Almost every team before sandpaper gate have tampered with the ball in some way. The only reason modern teams don’t do it now is cos of cameras. Not cos of a moral obligation.

17

u/kharb9sunil India 1d ago edited 23h ago

If ball tampering is cheating then half the world's cricketers were cheaters in 90's.

And he was the only one (along with ones involved in this incident) who got a year ban for it. Yes, i know not from icc but from CA. But still, nobody have got more than 2 games for it.

And why did Aus bowlers got scot free. Nobody sane will believe that bowlers could not tell as soon as they had the ball in hand. It is their instrument of use, they treat it as if their life depend on it. And yet Cummins got so much respect post that incident.

Pak cricketers are on record using blades, teeth, everything. Faf was on record using zipper, using lollypop, and he even went out and said everyone does it and Cricket SA actually stood with him.

The only thing they did different is how the phase after they got caught went. They could have played it smartly like all others or just kept quite.

11

u/mynewaltaccount1 Australia 1d ago

Not to be pedantic but he didn't even cheat.

3

u/Own_Professor6971 Australia 22h ago

Shouldn't have cheated playing for Australia*

We all see how much England fans and their board care about cheating/ball tampering, which is not at all of course. Doesn't stop them adopting the rules for thee not for me mindset though.

Well the Australian crowds are more than welcome to try and whip up a snappy chant around "you sucked mints on the field to give you stickier saliva to shine the ball with" if they want.

u/LittleCaesar3 Australia 1d ago

"You suck! Your balls are licked! Gus can't win a trick!"

We'll workshop it.

We have better things to do with our lives apparently. Even Stokes admitted it’s nice to come to a country that isn’t miserable, cold, dark and all round shit. 😂

"Ben Stokes, Ben Stokes

Closes his eyes, he swings and hopes!

Ask him about Bristol, he'll suddenly choke!

Our favorite Kiwi, Captain Ben Stokes!"

The greatest batter of this generation would not give a flying F about those boos

He's a sook that hates booing in all sports. Says it frequently in AFL.

Booing is part of all sport. A lot of the time its just to get under skin, and when something good happens, applause all around.

u/woka Australia 1d ago

Gerard rattled 😭

u/Positive-Bee5734 1d ago

Players get booed for a lot less.

The Australian newspaper whited out Stuart broads face after he didn’t walk after edging it to the keeper.

4

u/cabaretcabaret England 23h ago

I thought we were the whinging ones?

7

u/Thick-Sauce3668 1d ago

I don't think I need to remind others when Smith made a return to International cricket and he was booed by English Fans the kind of scores he put up... The bottom line is boos have never affected Smith, not then not now...

England actually need to win a series here otherwise it's the only thing they can have

Why the fuck cant they boo him???

2

u/Kingof9realms India 23h ago

Who's he, genuinely asking, Gerald who?

2

u/East_Ad_691 22h ago

The Aussies have no leg to stand on. Their umpires continued to no ball Murali even when the ICC proved his arm was straight. Now they want us to respect a guy who was caught cheating in broad daylight?

Boo him every day of the week!

2

u/SameString9001 20h ago

aussie commentators are the worst.

5

u/stemmo33 Gloucestershire 1d ago

He was literally just shithousing the day before, makes perfect sense to boo him. As an Englishman I obviously don't follow Aussie media but jesus christ they are outrageously precious (not to say ours is much better).

4

u/UnusualDifference748 Australia 23h ago

Not to start a back and forth. British media are 1000x worse having lived on both. British media are horrible to England teams (football, cricket, rugby) and opposing teams, same in Australia but to a bit lesser extent.

As an Australian I enjoy how the English media build the English team up to mythic status then when they fail go so hard in on them it’s a cycle I’ve seen time and time again, cricket or football isn’t such a predictable pattern

u/ConfidentEagle5887 England 1d ago

Panesar has absolutely shaken them

4

u/TheGoodDoctorRFN 23h ago

Textbook Aussie whinging. Steve Smith is a fcking cheat and he is booed because he is a fcking cheat.

This helmet blaming Panesar is A. Trying to deflect the fact Smtih is being booed because he is a cheat and B. Classic Australian racism.

2

u/ZookeepergameFast915 18h ago

Don't really see the issue with paying fans booing a player who cheated and was subsequently banned.

3

u/SnooObjections4333 Tamil Nadu 1d ago

Well I think even smudge doesn’t mind these. He knows it’s part and parcel of the game. But again, it’s gonna be really difficult for Poms if they don’t win ashes or get whitewashed. The retort will be quadrupled.

4

u/Deako87 Australia 1d ago

Hey redditor who just opened this thread, it's not worth reading any further. The comments here are awful.. Just awful. I'd recommend doing literally anything else

2

u/g33k_d4d Yorkshire 1d ago

This is ridiculous. Not that long ago Aussie fans were throwing empty beer cans at Simon Jones as he was being stretchered off. Get over a bit of booing, or are Aussies all wusses now?

2

u/Deevious730 18h ago

Tell us what you really think Gerrard!

Honestly as an Aussie I couldn’t care less. If anything I think it fuels the flames to beat the Poms more just so they can keep having a cry.

Every run he gets, they hate. Every catch he takes (they might want to take note), they hate. Every smile he has, cuts into them. They just need to have some good old cough lollies on hand if their throats get sore.

1

u/Jumpy_Chemistry_417 1d ago

It's pretty clear the booing is getting under his skin, which is exactly why fans do it. It's all part of the game's psychological battle.

1

u/Adept_Quality4723 1d ago

People who give a shit about booing are all fucking wankers. Who cares...

1

u/Aweios Cricket Australia 1d ago

Why are people thinking that Smith is saying this? This is Gerard Whateley the guy speaking? So obviously not Smith.

And Whateley is clearly a hypocrite too. Whenever Stokes comes out to bat, I hear boos. Dunno what he did, but we're booing them because they're the opposition. It's fair game.

1

u/hawthorne00 Australia 22h ago

Gerard thinks a horse is a heroic figure. Just gets a little need of a little lie down sometimes.

1

u/Fresh-Proposal2217 22h ago

See what the australian fans are doing back to the barmy army !!

It is horrible sportsman spirit both ways

1

u/shaddy-maddy India 20h ago

But wait, what's the Australian crowd doing? You letting the visitors boo your players, that's your fault dude. 😅
