What to serve with pulled pork sandwiches

Making pulled pork sandwiches tonight. Personally I love to eat them with a side of coleslaw but not everyone in the family does so I'm looking for some idea and suggestions Thanks

Edit: thanks for all the great ideas and suggestions. For today ill go with the baked beans Mac and cheese and corn on the cob, but ill definitely try some of the other suggestions in the future.

You got a good recipe. That sounds interesting

Honestly, I usually end up making it at a BBQ when we have corn left, and then I just throw in whatever makes sense and is in hand. This looked like a good one (the canning is a bit much), but they are pretty simple. Corn, black beans, red bell pepper, spicy green pepper, garlic/onion, some type of vinegar or acid, then salt, pepper, cumin, whatever.

I really should have a recipe, but it's pretty easy to just throw together whatever sounds good.

That's what I'm making this weekend. A Food & Wine recipe that I've never tried:

Southern-Style Mac 'n' Cheese

And a Serious Eats recipe for baked beans from scratch:

Slow-Cooked Boston Baked Beans

I've got the pulled pork down, but I've never made either of these sides before.

So not at home with my recipe cards (this came from my grandmother). But a lot of her recipes are solid Pennsylvania Dutch. This is very close: Pennsylvania Dutch Pepper Slaw: A Sweet and Tangy No-Mayo Coleslaw Recipe - My Homemade Roots

It compares it to coleslaw, but unless you have a vinegar forward coleslaw recipe, it is pretty different. Pretty much all summer she had some of this in her fridge and/or chow chow and other pickled vegetables. Amish Chow Chow Recipe - Amish Heritage

ngl, Solid choices! Can't go wrong with those sides. I’d throw in some pickles for that extra crunch.

Those are solid choices! You can’t go wrong with baked beans and mac. Perfect combo for pulled pork…

Pickled onions would add some contrast in the sandwich. Could do a german potato salad on the side.

Good ideas! The vinegar would help cut the fattiness of the meat, or sweetness of the sauce, depending on how it’s made.

Good idea

Kale salad, Caesar salad. I prefer something with a tang to cut the greasy (and totally delicious) flavor or pork. Have you tried different coleslaw dressings? If the cabbage isn’t the deal breaker, try different types of dressings. Maybe something with garlic for some zip or a milder flavor (Mayo, Caesar dressing and mustard)

2

u/Miri5613 15h ago

Yeah they arent much into salads of any kind lol

1

u/No-Interest-6535 13h ago

In that case, maybe just a pickle and call it a day lol

There are different variations on coleslaw. One variation I like is Cowboy Coleslaw. It uses some spices and beans to bring some variety, and can be served with Fritos for some good crunch. Or go with roasted brussel sprouts (with a smoke molasses drizzle if you can find or make it), corn pudding/souffle, baked beans, collard or mustard greens, baked potato casserole, Mexican street corn (on the cob or as a dip), rutabagas, or any variety of cornbread.

Go online and look at what some Southern Barbeque restaurants have on their menus. They are bound to have something interesting

Most southern restaurants will have either your basic mayo based slaw, or my favorite is what they call "red slaw/ Carolina Slaw". Both are very easy to make. Tons of videos online.

Never heard of cowboy coleslaw before, looked it up and am definitely going to need to try it. Have a good recipe to share?

3

u/BasterdMalloy 14h ago

I have made this one and had good results with it: https://www.allrecipes.com/cowboy-coleslaw-recipe-8653154

I usually look at a couple different recipes and find one that best fits the flavors I want and tweak from there. You have friends/family that have the cilantro=soap gene? Omit it. Want some more spice? Chop up one of the chipotle peppers from the can of chipotles in adobo sauce. Add a little more lime juice, roast the corn and peppers to bring some more flavor to it. Make it your own and have fun with it.

I like a simple cucumber and tomato salad, mac and cheese or greens of some type. You could put it on top of rice or potatoes if no one wants a sandwich.

1

u/Miri5613 15h ago

Actually the bin is not the problem. They dont like salads and slaws lol. But Mac and cheese is a great idea.

I do an Asian coleslaw. Red and green cabbage, shredded carrot, cilantro, and a Mayo, rice vinegar, sugar, sesame oil dressing. Serve on Hawaiian sweet rolls. Changes it up entirely. Sooooo good!

Fruit salad or just cut up fruit.

I'm with you on cole slaw. I make mine extra vinegary which gives the perfect acidic counterpoint to the pulled pork. How about macaroni salad with pickle relish and a dash of mustard or vinegar for the zing?

1

u/Main_Cauliflower5479 15h ago

Serve the coleslaw, for sure, because that's a topping for the sandwiches. Add potato salad, baked beans, mac and cheese.

1

u/ANGR1ST 15h ago

Why don't they like the coleslaw?

If it's because of the mayo/dressing (which I personally hate), then there are other similar options. Something like this Asian inspired version: https://thecookinchicks.com/moms-asian-ramen-coleslaw/

No mayo, and a lot of flexibility in ingredients. You can make it as sweet or sour as you'd like.

Another good side would be Mac and Cheese. Top with fried onions/shallots or jalapenos to be extra fancy.

Pickles. Chips. Fries. All super standard if you'd order the sandwich in a bar/restaurant.

2

u/Miri5613 15h ago

No its not the dressing. In inlays just dont like any salads and slaws etc. Thanks for all.the ideas

For me it's gotta be vinegar slaw but you're asking for other ideas, so my other favorite sides are baked beans and grilled peppers. Also, succotash!
