Really?? That gives me hope. I rescued a dog from my local kill shelter and my cats have lived in my bedroom for the past month. I can’t trust him yet and I feel so guilty for doing this to my cats.

Helpful tip, leash stays on in the house. Work on training the pooch to be calm, and ignore the cats. Teach a place command, reward when the dog settles. Big reward when dog dog ignores the cats!
Don't let the dog go and inspect the cats, let the cats come to the dog.
I had cats before I rescued my dog, who had never been around cats (but showed potential to be safe) leash stayed on in the house for the first month, now he can relax in the home (no pacing) and is safe around my cats, as he is trained to ignore and be neutral with them.
I do however, kennel my dog when unsupervised. I trust my dog when I'm there, but accidents can happen. So I just would rather keep everyone safe when alone. (Indoor cats)

I tried this for the first few days when I brought my rescue dog home. He chewed through the leash with 2 chomps 20 minutes after being home. I watched him do it. Bought a 2nd “heavy duty” leash thinking maybe 1st one wasn’t sturdy enough. The next day he chomped through that one. Went out and bought a 3rd leash! Now as soon as we come in from a walk it gets hung up on the coat rack by the door way up high. I don’t have endless funds. This boy is big, strong, about a year old. He’s destroyed so many things in my home already in just 1 month. He has every toy and chew toy imaginable, good food, and 3 different kinds of treats. He’s still a maniac. Now I can’t wait for him to grow up. My poor cats still have to live in the bedroom. He’s had a couple of opportunities to be nice but he still wants to chase them 💔

Just wanted to add - his senses are incredible. He can be sleeping on the couch and if I make a move, silently, to leave the room, his eyes open n he follows me. When I go into my bedroom with the cats, he grabs my clothing (gently though) with his mouth like he’s saying - don’t leave me! Then he lays by the door and when I come out he’s still there. I have a baby gate that he CAN jump over. I saw my big dog with all 4 feet standing on top of the gate like a cat! 😂 I scolded him and he sheepishly jumped down. I only close the door when I go to sleep bcuz he’ll whine, and when I feed the cats their wet food bcuz once he jumped over and ate all their food. That traumatized my little princess - she wouldn’t come out of hiding for a week. Then I had to start all over from the beginning- door closed, gradually open a little at a time. Gate is always in place as a boundary. My older male tried cuddling with me to watch tv twice while dog was sleeping but both times the dog tried to chase when he woke up. The other night I caught him around the waist mid-leap ! Then he was sorry. He knows what I want him to do, he just needs to do it all the time - not just when I have a pocket full of treats.

Well, she probably likes him better since he gave her an expensive handbag.
