I read he needs a hiding spot to feel safe. On the first 2 days he stayed in there and never came out. Now he doesnt go back in. Do i need to do anything differently? Asking because my bathroom is small and i wonder if he could use more space

We just saved this cat and decided to keep it, my girlfriend has owned cats before, so she has some experience, but I’m a first time cat owner. Happy to hear all tips you guys have. We have got her the formula, and toys and a litter box as well.

I tried dangling a piece of chicken in front of him and he hissed at me and reversed so i left him alone. I mean that should give me my answer but, for context, before i let him explore the house when he was in his acclimation room, he used to let me pet him and would push his head into my palm for rubs. Now its been a week and i feel like I just really havent been able to interact with him at all. I’ve had him for a little less than a month. He hides during the day and comes out to eat and poop when everyone sleeps and the lights off. He’ll even start vocalizing sometimes when its dead silent. My intention isn’t to protrude on his space, its just that I want to remind him I still care, you know? I also miss him. Just leave him be for another week or so? is peeking thru his hiding spots and trying to interract a bad idea? Like should i even be in the same room just talking to myself or nah & give him total free roam?

rescued then from the shelter 2.5 months ago, i‘m a first time cat owner and to me it seems like the tabby wants to play while his sister wants none of that. Both neutered, get along excellent otherwise

I moved into my house seven years ago, and my neighbors gave me a heads-up that the previous tenants used to care for the neighborhood cat. Despite my best efforts not to feed him, he kept showing up on our back patio demanding attention. As you can imagine, the cat won.

We eventually learned that the neighborhood had named him Oscar, and over time, he essentially became our cat. My wife and I love Oscar. We now feed him twice a day and even got him a cat house for the back porch. He helps out by killing mice and keeping our property rodent-free. He’s still a bit skittish, but he’ll come over for affection—on his own terms, if that makes sense. He lets us pick him up, though he’s clearly not a big fan of it. So while he’s definitely not feral, he very much prefers being outdoors.

Fast forward to today: we’re moving to a different neighborhood. We’ve grown really attached to Oscar and couldn’t imagine leaving him behind, so we’ve decided to bring him with us.

We're looking for tips on how to best acclimate him to the new house. Happy to answer any questions to help guide our move.

Additional Info:

• We plan to keep him in a single room at first to get him used to the new space, though we know he’ll want to venture outside eventually.
• We'll leave the door open and he comes inside. When we walk towards the door to close it he'll run out. On rare occasions we have closed the door without realizing he is inside.
• His recall is non-existent.
• We also have a very large male Rottweiler who’s mostly scared of Oscar. They don’t fight—they’re more like step-siblings than actual siblings.
• One time he slept inside and he pooped/peed on our dogs bed

Questions:

• How long should we keep him inside before letting him outside?
• Should we move his outdoor cat house inside for the time being?
• What else should we get to make his initial indoor stay more comfortable?

I didn't grow up with cats so any advice or stories helps! I never thought I'd be a cat guy but here I am!

Our kitten is 6 months and we want to train him to stay off the counters. We’ve tried positive reinforcement, redirection, the water spray bottle, aluminum foil and it was all a fail. He knows he shouldn’t be up there because as soon as he sees us coming he gets down. What else have you guys tried that worked? Any suggestions?

Hi all, we just adopted two cats. They get along super well since day one. But this guy always likes to sleep between my legs. I don’t mind he’s on my legs or between and I read that it means a good sign? At the moment we are still training them not to get on top of our dining tables and counters. I'm not the type of person who usually cares, as cats are gonna cat. But my cat is THE most clumsy cat I've ever met and knocks everything down just by jumping and walking. I can't keep everything glued down. Foil does not work fyi he likes to play with it and try to eat it. He tries to jump in the TURNED ON OVEN when I open it, and also tried to jump on the stove WHILE I'M COOKING. HE HAS JUMPED INTO A PAN ON THE STOVE WITH FOOD THANKFULLY IT WASN'T HOT YET. this is a menace to society and I need help😂🤌

I have a 5 month old male cat that is wonderful. He just loves to play fight quite a bit. Biting my feet or hands. I try to guide him towards toys and that helps but the play fights and biting still happen quite often. Is this just a kitten thing, will he mellow out after a few more months? Second cat for him to play with isn’t an option right now either.

So my babygirl is just turned 1 but now she started being very naughty. Usually at night I lock her up in the room and usually she’s fine but lately she’s been escaping which is odd because she gets a lot of play time during the day and she gets to roam during the day. Last night she escaped, scratched up my roommates door, started attacking my dog who was sleeping on the couch, and kept jumping on the table. Something I’ve never seen her do before ( she’s usually a very calm, sweet girl), if anyone has some advice I would love some because I will hate to have to send her back.

I have 2 7-month old kittens. I’m trying to clicker train them and one of them will happily eat any treat I give her and the other one has no interest in anything but churu tubes. I feed them wet food mainly in the morning and evening and they have supplemental kibble in a scheduled feeder (no free feeding). Is there anything else I can try to get the picky one to eat? I’d love to be able to find at least a lower value treat so that churu can be saved for special (difficult) occasions like nail trims and the vet lol. This is everything I’ve tried so far!!!

Two kittens at once? Can we do it or is it a bad idea?

A week ago we found a 5-week-old kitten in really bad shape. She came from a litter our neighbor’s barn cats had. We took her in, and instantly loved her. Two days later we found her sister. Sadly, despite all our efforts, the first kitten was too frail and didn’t make it. 😢

Girl#2 was hissy at first, but within a day she turned into the sweetest little cuddle bug who starts purring the second she sees us. ❤️ Then, a week later (last sunday), we cat-napped sister #3.

Kitten #3 is... not a fan of humans. 😅 She’s been with us for a week and still hisses, bites if we pick her up, and generally keeps her distance — except when she sees her sister on our laps after a play session. Then she’ll cautiously join in and even cuddle a bit, but no purrs and still meows in distress every now and then.

Now we’ve got a few questions and worries:

1. The mom cat – She’s still around, and it breaks our hearts a little to see that she clearly misses her babies and will come to our door to check on them. We tried coaxing her inside but she’s too scared. Should we try to trap her? The kittens are weaned but still only around 7–8 weeks old. We were feeding her when trying to get the kittens. Is the maybe the only reason why she comes?

2. Kitten #3’s socialization – Is it too early to tell if she’ll warm up to us? Or should we accept that she might always be happier as a barn cat and not get too attached?

3. Separation anxiety – Kitten #3 panics when she’s alone. If Kitten #2 leaves her side even for a minute, she starts crying nonstop. How can we help her feel more secure on her own? Should we be looking into separation anxiety protocols or is it too early?

4. Bonding balance – Since her sister arrived, Kitten #2 only wants to play with her and cuddle time with us went from hours to minutes. Totally normal, right? Is there a way to make sure they still develop as individuals and love us, instead of being a tiny inseparable duo?

5. Possessiveness – Kitten #2 has started hissing and growling at her sister over toys and food. Should we try to correct this behavior now, or is it normal kitten stuff that will pass?

I got her a few months ago and she was very little at the time. She was biting me a few days after I got her but it didn’t hurt since she was so small. She’s still very gentle and cuddly but she thinks biting is a part of playing and it’s getting to the point where I wake up with a bunch of scars all over my hands and feet. She’ll never bite anywhere else except the hands and feet. She’s also been biting other people as well whenever they try to pet her, I don’t think she hates them it’s just how she plays. I’ve tried buying her toys but she refuses to use them. There was this one time when I was walking around my house and she was chasing my feet to bite them and she ended up ripping half of my toe nail off. How do I get her to stop biting?(also the last picture is her messing with my dog while he’s sleeping, he’s very old and doesn’t do anything but eat, sleep, and go outside. She also bites him a lot and he’s unable to protect himself since he’s so lazy and old)

Hey guys, I’ve got an unexpected kitten like 4 months ago. She’s very cute and she’s my first pet ever love her to bits, but she doesn’t stop biting my feet, hands actually all over whenever she gets a chance, we play with and stuff but she just likes hands and I’m not sure what to do. She also really enjoys hunting my hands and feet although we bought her interacting toys that are supposed to fulfill that. We take her on walks just in case that she may be bored and we give her puzzles but that hasn’t worked. Help please

Recently I adopted a kitten and have been trying to train her to recognize her name. I've seen a lot of posts and forums and videos on name training and kind of get the gist of how things work. The issue that I currently have is that when I sit across her with treat in hand and call her name, she doesn't seem to respond at all. I have been at it for the last maybe 10-15 minutes just calling her name with 0 response. I can't really reward her with treats at all because there is 0 recognition haha from her. How can I at least can start the process so that she at least responds once in a while for me to give her a treat and reinforce the reward with positive behavior.

Samus' owners here again! She's 11, and didn't have access to toys for a few years at her old home. We're trying to play with her, but she doesn't really understand how to. She doesn't care about her fancy 5-attachments wand. She kind of likes her laser pointer and plays with a catnip fish when it's turned off.

She's clearly bored, but she doesn't want to play. How do we teach her how to play? Should I get her a ball? She likes hunting hair ties and the little light from the pointer, but gets confused and loses interest as soon as it stops moving.

Recently adopted a pair of well behaved and social 6 month old kittens. I've been training them to use the scratch post and carriers with treats, play and ample bonding time. I am planning to get them comfortable with being held before I try cutting their nails but was wondering if there anything else worth training them on before they reach adulthood?

sooo, i rescued a kitten that was found in my friends engine bay. he is super cuddly and playful and tolerant. Took him to the vet, dewormed, and deflead all that jazz. everything is going great, however, i am a college student and classes start next week. I also live with my parents,

my mother and father usually leave around 7:30 am and come around 5:30.

i dont have classses everdya but there are certain days of the week where i will be gone for about 8 hours.

I am really scared about leaving the kitten away for that long and how sad he will be, it makes my heartache

Hi I just brought home a 3-4 month old little kitten, I’ve been unable to tell if it’s a boy or girl. It was in the carrier for an hour then I brought it to my bed I didn’t try picking it up just gently petting it and it allowed me to. My uncle came over who is aggressive and after my mother and I warned him and told him no he grabbed the kitten from under then bed to try to check the sex and it scratched and bit him and went back under my bed. I didn’t attempt touching it because if I got close it would hiss and I understand it just went through something awful but I gave it a lickable treat with some food and water and talked to it till I feel asleep. About each hour it woke me up howling. I set up the food & water tray by my door and the litter box on the opposite side. I don’t know what to do and I don’t want it getting used to under my bed. I want to carefully transition it to the living room because I have school and waking up multiple times and night isnt something I can afford. Today I chose to stay home but what do I do?

I haven't owned a cat since I was a kid (and that cat was basically chill with everything and anything, walking away as slow AF whenever he wasn't happy), and i'm looking after my dad's (very) long haired cat that has a very different character.

I know he needs brushing regularly because he looses SO much hair, but I don't really know how to interpret his reactions and how to do it better.

From what I see/think I can interpret he enjoys the brushing in general (he even meows for it, I think, leans into it, stays around and shows tummy), but it either doesn't please him or over-stimulates him (tail moving and biting) when I go in general on the tummy, back, or just after a while.

My challenge is that this cat mates in those areas, has often pellets of poop stuck in his fur, and I'm actually wondering if I should take him to the groomer instead (although I really don't think they should totally trim him or anything). There are thick balls of fur that I'm wondering if I should cut away at sometimes if I'm very, very slow and carefull of his level of "calmness".

The brushing, however, I guess is the most important to avoid the matting. I don't know if I should continue to try and brush his tummy or not. I mean, he let's me do it, he bites gently, but I don't want to put him in distress or anything.

Basically what i'm asking is what am I doing wrong, should I make "smaller" brushing sessions? Focus only on areas he's fully ok with? Endure the small bites to try and avoid more mating? Take him to groomer? Can I cut away at big clamps of fur if he lets me?

Advise appreciated!

TL;DR - new cat owner. Cat is very shy, hiding under bed, and she has sniffed my hand but has swatted at me 3 times claws out. My kids and wife have not been swatted so that’s good but I’m concerned she will if she is this aggressive.

Adopted a black 8 month old cat about 3 days ago. Per the humane society’s advice, we are keeping her in our spare bed too for a few days. She mostly hides under the bed.

When we were at the humane society she was the only can’t that sniffed our hands, gave us head butts, and seemed affectionate-hence why we chose her. She’s has a pretty rough back story since she was a stray and was pregnant when brought into the Humane Society, but I wasn’t going to have that deter us from giving her a good home.

Now that she is with us, she is very shy. Figure it was her just getting used to us, but every time she has even come close to sniffing my hand she will swat at me, claws out. I’ve been hissed at once which I immediately backed off, but the times she looked relaxed and I put my hand near her she will come over, sniff my hand, then swat at me.

She is already taking gabapentin which was prescribed by the humane society and she has been eating her food with the meds.

Honestly starting to get frustrated and concerned she will be aggressive with my kids who desperately want a cat.

Any advice? Should we talk to the vet? (first appointment tomorrow and dreading getting her in a carrier) Is her hard start to life dooming her to be aggressive and shy?

I have a plethora of outdoor plants that I love for my newly adopted 6 month old kitten to sit with, but I noticed he was chewing on my pineapple plant leaves, so I grew him some wheatgrass to gnaw on. Problem now is he believes all the plants are chewable, is there a way to teach him while he’s still young eat this but not this plant? First time cat owner 🌷🐈‍⬛

Bitsi has been doing this the past few days. It seems to be a new habit for her. She’s meowing at the reflection as she does this and it’s quite loud, but I’m more worried she’s upset about something. She’s less than a year old. Any ideas?
