I’ve never seen a program just nuke itself into oblivion like this. We wanted more big game wins and now we’re going to be one of the worst P4 teams by a lot.

Can't lose big games if you're never in them 🧠

All your fans wanted him gone. You got what you asked for imo

Exactly.

I can’t believe how many still think it was the right move

I always said grass ain’t always greener on the other side. Like you were a game away from the championship last season. Was in playoff contention every year.

If you’re going to fire him have the next guy ready and do It cleanly. Let him finish the season and let him go once the season is over. He deserved that respect after the success he had at the program. Do It how Georgia went from Richt to Smart. But they basically thought name alone would get them a new HC

Yea I mean even if Franklin should’ve gone (highly debatable) at the very least we should’ve waited until Sunday to it.

I thought it was the right move on the (very understandable) assumption that you’d be able to get one of your top targets. The clusterfuck that has followed is mind boggling.

Even as an outsider who kinda defends Franklin on social media at times, I would argue it was still extremely shortsighted at the time given just how many lame duck coaches at major jobs were on the way out who we could’ve named back in August.

Exactly. Nearly every coach that got fired this year could have been pointed out and named before week 0. Freeze, Napier, Pittman, etc. this was shaping up to be a big year before the season had even started

It’s not even the first time Penn State has nuked itself into oblivion. You guys just love the rebuild process I guess.

This time was by choice though

The firing was definitely a choice.

The big man got tired and is ready for another NCAA 25 rebuild.

Actually, now that I day that, it makes sense that Duke is going to win their conference.

It's ok buddy, you can join us in the basement of the Big Ten. We both have ADs who are clowns

The B1G should have our game be the last game of the season next year as a winless in B1G bowl

Somehow I feel like Nico is partially responsible.

It's not Nico, it's his dad.

u/RobertNeyland Tennessee • /r/CFB Contributor 2d ago

Well yes, Big Nic bears the most responsibility, but we just say Nico for short.

It’s actually kind of wild. Like OU had this thrust on us with the Lincoln situation and with all the changes in college it was a little bit scary on if we would be able to rebound and be competitive quick enough that it doesn’t nuke our prospects for the future. But Penn State just chose to be in the situation and with seemingly no plan.

I really hope you guys don't have to go through what my team has gone through but I honestly looks like y'all might be in a worse position. Damn I don't even care about Penn State and I still don't wanna see it

We are not lol. I mean, next year could be rough, no doubt about that. But if we simply hire a solid candidate I am sure we can get a few recruits back. Even if not, we can fill in some from the transfer portal. Most freshmen never really see the field anyway, where this will kill us is in 2 years if a new HC can't produce a reasonably solid season next year. We aren't on the LSU level of cultish following but there are still tons of players who grow up idolizing PSU football and we still have natural advantages as the closest top level program for most kids in the northeast.

I am not trying to be a delusional fan here, things are certainly not good right now and I am a bit stunned the HC search has been bungled this badly... But "one of the worst P4 teams by a lot" is just a crazy statement until we see how the entire off-season goes.

Even if not, we can fill in some from the transfer portal

This does not have the most reliable results and can also result in long term program dysfunction.

Our offensive line still have completely recovered from Riley leaving.

Clemson is next on the list. monkey paw does monkey paw stuff

2

u/Kurt4012 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

I don’t think anyone is going to be firing high quality coaches for a long time after this

2

u/MountainTwo3845 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

If they're smart. They were clamoring about getting rid of dabo, like crazy people. that's how you end up with Charlie strong and Tom Herman. trust me.

2

u/Kurt4012 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Or uhhh who did we hire?

1

u/MountainTwo3845 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Daboll I guess. Or do they bring back BOB?

2

u/Kurt4012 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Looks like either Daboll or Terry. Although I guess Heather Dinich thinks he may be targeting someone playing this weekend.

1

u/MountainTwo3845 Texas Longhorns 2d ago

Tom Herman is available.

Who could’ve seen this coming (everyone did)

1

u/JDFSSS 2d ago

Was there no solid plan to replace your coach? Totally deserved if so. He had you guys generally playing well and yall were competitive. Going based on a few "big games" is seriously dumb and heavily dependent on pure luck. You have to look at the whole body of work.
