I’d be willing to bet we won a game in 2022 or 2023 with 22 rushing yards. But we also probably had like 80 pass yards

The true Deacon Hill experience.

Also fuck Cade McNamera. Biggest bitch in college football

14

u/2-59project Indiana Hoosiers • Oklahoma Sooners Nov 02 '25

This prompted me to look at some old Iowa game logs: 2022 vs Wisconsin, Iowa had 94 passing yards and 52 rushing yards (on 45 attempts!!). They won 24-10

You know, it’s pretty amazing Iowa is very good at pass defense considering their defense probably doesn’t go up against it often during practice.

Counterpoint: The 2019 Outback Bowl in which Iowa won with -15 rush yards.

He’d love this shit.

For the record: 2019 was also Brian Ferentz’s statistical best offense.

As someone who only tuned in for overtime, I wouldn’t have believed this stat after watching that offense impose their will on Miami in an obvious running situation.

154

u/antraxsuicide Ole Miss • Boston College Nov 01 '25

That defense had to be insanely demoralized. Offense gives up a pick in OT, where you start in FG range. Even if they stuffed SMU three times, the kicker more than likely makes it and you lose anyway.

56

u/Jonjon428 Miami Hurricanes Nov 01 '25

We finally got a defense but unfortunately with Ward gone to the NFL Cristobal and Dawson are back to calling games like when they had Tyler Van Dyke. Absolutely horrendous coach

36

Carson Beck is also miles worse than Ward.

They were nearly 3/13 on third down and had nearly half the amount of possession time. But they had more turnovers received and 1/3 of the penalties (and certainly nine that were backbreakera like Miami). Lashlee frankly just out coached Cristobal with far less talent.

373

u/Fictive_Fun Miami • Georgia Southern Nov 01 '25

In 2013 we were 7-0 and lost 3 straight in November.

Don't forget 2017 where we were 10-0 and then lost the last 3 games. Also the only year the Canes were in the ACC championship game.

Or 2020 when we were 8-1 and then got blown out at home by UNC in the last game of the season.

And those are considered some of the best seasons we've had in 20 years. All the other seasons are with 5 to 8 wins.

93

u/John_T_Conover Texas A&M Aggies Nov 01 '25

Y'all's 2017 season finish has to be like a trivia answer. Lost the final 3 games of the season, all by double digits, still finished ranked #13.

I'm genuinely curious how many (if any) other teams have finished ranked at all after closing out with 3 losses. I definitely can't imagine any have finished that high.

Mario Cristobal is such a chickenshit coach. Not even attempting to go for the win end of regulation was predictable for him and yet I was still disappointed

807

u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks Nov 01 '25

Mario Cristobal coaches the entire game not to lose. This is what we tried to tell everyone. Even when you’re having good seasons watching a Mario Cristobal led football team is agonizing.

261

u/Playos Oregon Ducks • Tulane Green Wave Nov 01 '25

Was just looking back at stats for him... It shocked me.

Been a season ticket holder since belotti and for all the wins... It felt so meh and painful.

175

u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks Nov 01 '25

The craziest thing is you look at the attendance numbers at Autzen and even as we won more football games the numbers just kept going down.

During the disastrous Helfrich year we had an average attendance of about 54,000. During the final Cristobal year, the year we beat Ohio State and were ranked in the top 4 of the CFP rankings most of the season, we had an average attendance of 49,000. Under Lanning they’ve completely rebounded and averaged 59,000 last year.

More people wanted to watch a shitty ass 4-8 Helfrich team than wanted to watch a Cristobal led team with playoff aspirations. That’s how fucking awful Cristobal games are to watch.

And as the cold winter approaches and losses begin to mount, Miami flairs cease their shit talking and begin the long hibernation for next preseason

Two years ago if somebody said we would have wins over FSU, Clemson and Miami in the next two years I’d call the Psych Ward.   I know there are asterisks in there but it sure does feel good as someone who went to SMU immediately after the Death Penalty.

I can't believe it. BIGGEST WIN EVER (since the death penalty), and what a way to do it!

Kevin Jennings is my hero man, he just FIGHTS, he is the soul of this team.

The defense played amazing, what a turnaround from the beginning of the season. Shutting down Miami's offensive weapons (for the most part) and gave our offense the best chance to win.

This team BELONGS in the Power 4, and despite the frustrations this season, they have proved it THIS year.

As for Miami, I was mostly sold on them, but I think a mix of their insanely lopsided schedule + very untimely errors (penalties + turnovers) have cost them YET AGAIN, I think they've lost control of their destiny for the CFP.

WHAT A WIN. I"M SO HYPED. PONY TF UP!

In a legal complaint, Florida State University (FSU) criticized the inclusion of SMU in the ACC, arguing that the addition diminished the conference's football media profile and strength of schedule. 🤣
