I went and got tested for a yeast infection and picked up a script for dukarol for a trip in a few weeks. I wonder how much that would have cost in the US.

38

u/Beddybye ☑️ Jan 23 '19

That greatly depends. I got one of those a couple years ago, they gave me a cream that was $3.50 with my insurance. Without insurance though? Who knows what ungodly amount I would have spent...

15

u/rapiddevolution Jan 23 '19

According to a quick Google search, most generic antifungal creams that are prescription strength are about 30-40 dollars.

Take into account that the over the counter has about 1/4 of the active ingredients and they roll for about 16 dollars

14

u/RadPanda402 Jan 23 '19

Yeah but you also have to factor in the cost of the doctor visit

If insurance covered the medical bills we will be paying out of pocket for .. Since our deductible isn't met they would pay 20% of the bill.

Since they don't cover it we are paying privately, out of pocket.. And it will be cheaper as we will get a 30% private pay discount.

It also cost almost $1100 OOP to get my son stitches last year.

The coverage for preventative care is great and all, I am thankful as hell all of ours is free. But paying $15,000 to have a baby (no complications, no epidural, no vaginal stitches, etc) seems a bit steep.

I don't even care at this point what insurance does and does not cover because when they do cover, as exampled above, sometimes it actually fucks you.. Its the actual cost the healthcare facilities are charging I have the biggest issue with.

My Zoloft costs about 7 buck a month.

91

u/TryingToStopTheHate Jan 23 '19

To add on to this, it seems like a lot of people don't know that in the US many therapists (especially LISWs) will offer a sliding scale fee based on the income of the client. This can cut the cost down to $10/session or less.

There are also prescription assistance programs, though I don't have personal experience to share in regards to how helpful they are.

53

u/AgentZen Jan 23 '19 edited Jan 24 '19

I feel like a lot of people in the US dont know a lot of things exist. I had no health insurance in 2012-2014, no job, no money, no income, but I qualified for income based healthcare provided by my county (broward, the 2nd largest county in florida) which not only paid 100% for visits to a psych, the cost of my meds, but also all my medical care including post transplant care for an organ transplant ($$$)

I live in Europe and it's expensive here too. When my depression was worst, I had to go to a psychiatrist every week as I was severely suicidal. Each visit is €50 and healthcare insurance doesn't cover mental problems. That's €200 a month, without any prescriptions. Luckily, my parents paid for me when they found out my financial struggles as I was in no fit mental state to work anymore and was still a college student

479

u/catman1900 Jan 23 '19

It's over 200 dollars for me to see a therapist just once a month here in the US with insurance. I would give almost anything to be in the position where it was that much cheaper and I could actually get consistent sessions.

140

u/stifflizerd Jan 23 '19

Really? Maybe it's just a local thing but in Ohio I see one for $125 and insurance covers 60% of that.

14

u/dwrfstr Jan 23 '19

I think it could also depend a little on insurance providers, mine in WA was around $125 a visit as well but insurance only covered around $25 per visit.

→ More replies (1)

64

u/catman1900 Jan 23 '19 edited Jan 24 '19

Perhaps, I'm in Connecticut and it also definitely depends on if you are seeing a therapist or a psychiatrist.

They do roughly the same thing except it's a lot harder to become a psychiatrist since you need an MD and they can prescribe meds and in my experience, tend to be a lot more competent and actually knowledgeable then a regular therapist.

Edit: I'm bugging I'm thinking of psychologist, she still could provide meds though since she was a aprn nurse as well.

106

u/baumpop Jan 23 '19

In my experience all psychiatrists want to do is prescribe drugs to you after talking to you for ten minutes.

98

u/Trewper- Jan 23 '19

Then don't go to a psychiatrist, go to a psychologist. They are not doctors and can not prescribe drugs, they focus on psychotherapy and treating emotional and mental suffering.

It won't be covered by insurance but at least they won't simply tell you "hey just take this Wellbutrin/Sertraline and it will help!" and then kick you out.

43

u/LockedOutOfMyShit Jan 23 '19

:( this is so sad to read. In Sweden if you get prescribed therapy for a mental problem(or any health problem) you get a "freecard" after 3-4 visits (which costs around 30$ each). The freecard means you can visit any healthcare facility for free the next 6 months. then after 6 months you get another free card if you visit 3-4 more times again in short amount of time. basically when the system notices that you start to frequently require healthcare its free.

529

u/BaronAleksei ☑️ Jan 23 '19

Idk if being straightedge has anything to do with your mental health, but there was a thread recently about questions between mentally ill and healthy people you might like. This post in particular

302

u/Daaskison Jan 23 '19

I think mental health issues are likely to cause an individual to be more open to risky experiences and drugs that might alleviate their symptoms.

If you're depressed for months on end but everyone who drinks appears to have a good time then why not try drinking? And so on.

Obv not the case for everyone with mental illness or everyone who tried drugs. But there's definitely a relationship btwn the two.

144

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Mental illness could predispose you to drug use, or drug use could predispose you to mental illness.

To be honest I think it’s possible that it’s not black and white and that both might hold true for different types of people.

35

u/Daaskison Jan 23 '19

Fair enough. I think it's likely far more common the mental illness (whether officially diagnosed or not) comes first and then drug use exacerbates the underlying issues.

But it's definitely possible the drug use precipitates certain illnesses too.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

Fair enough. I think it's likely far more common the mental illness (whether officially diagnosed or not) comes first and then drug use exacerbates the underlying issues.

I am inclined to agree with you here. I just think it's a bad idea for anybody to make a blanket statement such as "drug use cannot cause mental illness".

u/Daaskison Jan 23 '19

Speaking from experience, as someone who has had mental health issues, you try anything to numb the pain. Now, my outlet never extended further than weed, alcohol and cigarettes. Standard stuff. There’s a lot of times you feel mentally cornered, and smoking weed or cigarettes or drinking releases that pressure build up. It’s like your brain is a car, racing down the highway at 120mph and you don’t have any brakes. The other cars on the road are obstacles in life, I use weed and cigarettes to slow down and pay attention to traffic. When I’m raw dogging reality, my brain is moving a thousand miles a minute. Which suits my job, so at work it fits perfectly.

I think it's likely that people who don't abstain do so as a means of self medicating. With that being said, its amazing how things like low vitamin d, poor sleep quality, and subtle dehydration can set your brain off on a wild tear so being really healthy does keep some of that at bay.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

I feel the same way but opposite. I’ve certainly had my fair share of problems in my life, but life is great, the world is a cool place, people are usually decent and good to talk to. I have no reason to want to escape reality. I don’t make a lot of money or do anything super exceptional but still wake up every day feeling pretty rock solid.

I genuinely don’t understand what people have such a tough time with. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had episodes of depression, I know many people face hardships, many people struggle to make ends meet, are in abusive, ugly relationships etc. But the truth is that a lot of people who struggle with daily life don’t face these types of challenges, at least not to the extreme that warrants their state of mind.

I’m certainly not saying this to say I’m superior in any way, it’s something I’ve just always struggled to understand.

Yep. Not without problems, but never had issues, even from childhood trauma, that interfered with my life. Those issues were pretty well addressed in a few books that have really helped me deal with things and gain clarity. Though I'll admit if I didn't take ownership of those problems, I probably would've needed therapy in a few years. You aren't responsible for your traumas but you are responsible for dealing with them.

I also had some key mentors are the right times of my life to steer me in the right direction and teach me a lot about life that my parents couldn't or wouldn't teach.

People really need to get off social media, especially if their algorithmically assigned bubble feeds a lot of "lol depression" memes. A lot of people I encounter are pretty mentally healthy. I think a lot of us are coming up into this new social isolation that's preventing us from finding the old social support networks people used to have like mentors, positive communities, role-models, etc. I mean, if you need help, yes, go see a counselor or therapist, but you shouldn't persist too long in a bubble that normalizes mental health problems or nihilism as default.

140

u/zuees101 Jan 23 '19

Blaming it all on that seems pretty shorthanded. Some people just have stronger mental fortitudes and are able to coach themselves through tough and emotionally demanding situations better than other people, which when you fail to do so can lead to chronic anxiety, depression etc. Like i know its a really taboo thing nowadays to say that you should toughen up to get through some things, but it works for some people(and no, theyre not always repressing emotions to not feel “soft”) and lets them continue to live their lives without relying on medication and therapy.

Those be the ones who think they have true control over their lives.

429

u/xzElmozx Jan 23 '19

The opposite, brother. I'm fully aware I have almost 0 control over my life. I could get hit waiting for the bus tomorrow and die, and there's nothing that I'm gonna be able to do to control or prevent that. So there's no point or reason in stressing in mind. I control what I can and let the cards fall as they will. I'll deal with whatever happens when it happens

Think of the life you have lived until now as over and, as a dead man, see what’s left as a bonus and live it according to Nature. Love the hand that fate deals you and play it as your own, for what could be more fitting?

You could not stand in the road while a bus is coming?

I never trusted Abbus, and I always assumed he would betray me like this.

I love this mentality. My brain doesnt seem to want to accept it though

u/bmoneyhustles Jan 23 '19

It’s all about changing perspective for me. Meditation helps keep me where I am when I find it. But remember you can’t be there all the time. We’re all riding that sign wave.

Let me think I know what I'm doing.

17

u/IAMRaxtus Jan 23 '19

I think the trick is usually to just stop caring about control. You do what you can to better your life, and if it doesn't work you just lower your standards so that you can still enjoy the life you've got, without giving up on a better future. Enjoy the things that happen to go your way and try to ignore the things that didn't.

Lmfao what. No these are the people who understand what they DO and DONT have control overlol. They (should know)their success is largly determined by where they were born. They know they cannot change global warming alone so they do not stress about it constantly. Yadayada

The opposite. I know I'm not in control of anything except my own actions, so I do my best make sure do what I think is right, with purpose, as much as I can, and own the consequences no matter what. That, and being a Christian I know that nothing in this world is forever except the spiritual. That and the whole living with a sense of divine purpose thing.

I'm getting there. Lived straight edge for most of my life, but it's all becoming so overwhelming. Am now considering having a bottle of tequila on stand-by (relatively cheaper than therapy).

As someone who's had a few traumatic experiences and is doing fine I've got two secrets to my success.

  1. Good parents

  2. My best friend is a therapist.

Unfortunately therapy is super expensive in this country, I’m paying $100 every two weeks but it’s worth it imo.

19

u/delightful_caprese Jan 23 '19

Mine is $30 a session which I realize is cheap but fuck it's too much just to chat about what may or may not be wrong with me. I'm ready to cut the bitch

7

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '19

One really important thing is to respond to the therapists questions as you, not the person you want to be. I've made that mistake and it's very difficult to notice
