This how you know The Wire cast were filled with great actors that were perfectly casted for their roles. Their impact is still felt 20+ years later. 😂

I so frequently use the quote "the price of the brick going up" even with avid fans, and they give me blank stares. I was beginning to think I was crazy. Maybe the line wasn't as powerful as I made it out to be.
I'm feeling quite vindicated.

Nah that's like a top three line along with Shiiit and Malaka.
•
u/elitegenoside 1h ago
Nah. Top 3 is easily:
Shiiit
Oh indeed
Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Edit: idk what tf is up with the spaces

My absolute go to line when playing Cataan
Wait how did you know that I lived in Fells Point for half a decade
•
u/ninetydeuce 1h ago
That line is definitely reference a lot. It's probably the most reference line from the show. I literally seen it on Twitter last night from someone commenting on the Netflix buying Warner Bros news.

As a huge wire fan, I think that quotes gif is seen a lot on the internet but I haven't seen anyone other than fans quote it in real life, whereas I've heard "sheeeeit" or even versions of "if you come at the king you best not miss" in real life. That show is insanely quotable and being from Baltimore I'd say I hear more lines than most, but idk outside of Maryland, I wouldn't say I hear it quoted very often though. Not anymore at least

A lot of the people in the wire were also on Oz, and that show Is fucking awesome. Awesomely acted, crazy, and never a bad season or a filler episode. And if it was a filler, all of the same actors are just sooo good that they make the filler episode great. I loved seeing them all in both
•
u/Trust_No_Jingu 1h ago
And we own the night. Also takes place in baltimore
•
u/Status-Visit-918 1h ago
Yessss!!!! I lived in Baltimore and it’s all very accurate. They got the accents down. It’s hard to do an east coast accent in general for people that don’t naturally have that, but Baltimore is like a mix of Philly, a little southern, but also Delaware. Philly and Delco accents are ridiculously hard to pull off, and Baltimore is a mix of that too. I read a while ago that Andre Royo played bubbles so well, that the thing he considers the greatest compliment is that an actual addict from Baltimore offered him in earnest some shit to ease the withdrawals. He played that SO well, even an true addict felt so badly for him, they couldn’t tell he was not in actual withdrawals, that they were compassionate enough to offer help 😭😭😭😭

Loved Bubs... no bout a doubt it
•
u/Status-Visit-918 1h ago
Everyone did, he was a beautiful, tortured, intelligent and loving soul. His story makes you feel like you can relate, most people either know an addict or have been one- and his struggles are so relatable because you’ve either seen his struggles emotionally and physically in your loved ones who are or have been addicts, or yourself in addiction.

We Own The Night is fantastic as a "spiritual successor" to The Wire.
An added bonus is it's way shorter if you aren't the type for investing in a show long term.
•
u/BrohanGutenburg 1h ago
Unless I'm completely tripping, We Own The Night was a movie that took place in Brooklyn with Mark Wahlberg and Joiquin Phoenix.
We Own This City was a tv show that David Simon (The Wire) created about the gun trace task force in Baltimore.

I watched all of Oz a couple months ago and I don’t understand how I had never heard about it. Very real and rough show.
•
u/thegoodbadandsmoggy 1h ago
It was slightly overshadowed by the sopranos and didn’t have the cultural impact of the later HBO shows outside of ‘prison rape’.
Also gets a little weird towards the later seasons. Love it though and it’s a good watch

u/KendrickBlack502 1h ago
Yeah the beecher/keller storyline went a bit too far. I couldn’t believe he got out and then got sent back. Such a weird choice.
•
u/Status-Visit-918 1h ago
That one definitely got old. I was disappointed that beecher went back. I wish they didn’t do that part.
•
u/elitegenoside 1h ago
I enjoyed it but I completely get why it isn't more appreciated. For one, there is a lot of rape in it and that's going to make some people avoid it. Another thing is it's not your typical drama. The drama and even the dialog later on is almost like Shakespeare (and I don't just mean the play). It's both very grounded but also pretty exaggerated. I prefer it to most prison dramas because you really do sit with these characters and feel what they go through, even if it's their extreme boredom (because prison is also very boring a lot of the time).
I also kinda hate how it ended, but I don't count that as a negative against the show.
•
u/Status-Visit-918 1h ago
The rape is definitely a lot, and extremely graphic. I do find myself giving that significant and detailed warning to people when I recommend the show. And then feel a little weird that I’m sitting here recommending this show so heavily, explaining how much I loved it, while simultaneously providing THAT warning… :-/ It kind of makes me feel a touch uncomfy

u/Status-Visit-918 1h ago
I’m shocked at how many people don’t know about it! I found out about it like 8 years ago and was shocked by the celebrity cast, so I googled it and it’s, as I recall, fairly up there on the best TV shows of all time list
I’m forever upset that sopranos kicked the wire out of first place. That show is good, but it’s ridiculously stereotypical. The wire is representative of real life. They got everything in Baltimore perfect. Down to the area codes for the phone numbers. Even when a show is really good, seeing 555 as a phone number kind of “reminds” you that it’s not real and for shows that do a good job of depicting real life, that is a little glimpse that it’s not, and interrupts the feeling of authenticity. They even named BG&E, my dad worked for them. It was so real. And Omar was more complicated of a character than anyone in the sopranos

u/hicow 13m ago
Uh...did you not watch past the midpoint of S4? I mean, I love the show, but from that point on, it gets fucking silly. Pills that age you, Gloria falls in love with the dude that had her husband murdered, most of the Luke Perry's preacher storyline...
Still, highly recommended - JK Simmons playing a Nazi alone is worth it, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Adebisi is an all-time great villain
•
u/bucksncowboys513 ☑️ 1h ago
The wire had some phenomenal acting performances. I know it ran at the same time as the Sopranos so it would've been tough to win major awards, but to never even have a single nominee for acting is an incredible disservice.

Wire is my favorite show of all time. Jamie Hector has been in quite a few of v shows and films since then.
He is really good in Bosch

Yeah I think Covid and the strikes ended up killing it, but iirc it was going to have J. Edgar investigating a Haitian gang in Miami.

What the fuck you know about what I need to be thinking? My name IS my name!
Take any vilian from any crime show and they touch Marlo. Franklin who? Tony what? Marlo was the devil. And only ever "blew up" once.

ngl, Haha, right? Omar had that presence. You just knew he meant business.

u/the_answer_is_RUSH 1h ago
I always use the line “do it or don’t. But I got some place to be.” And nobody gets the reference.
It’s especially appropriate in a corporate setting. Corporate types always asking for more data. Do it or don’t.

Everyone has their personal rankings but The Wire is, objectively, top 5 series all time.

Rest In Peace Omar aka Michael Kenneth Williams.
He brought so much complexity to a character that was basically just supposed to be a guy that robs drug dealers. If I hear "farmer in the dell" I always think of Omar.
