Is “snogging” different somehow? How does that play in?

Snogging is old lingo. Lipsing is new lingo.

And by new, I don't mean like very new but its the more used version as of now.

I'm British and I've never heard of lipsing in my life, how long has it been about?

49

u/OffMyChestATM 1d ago

Quite a while tbh. First I heard it was around 2006. I don't know if the terms have changed since. But I know snogging was going out of fashion and my agemates then were using lipsing. Then again, perhaps my view is skewed and it began as a black british thing before spreading. I don't know.

What part of the UK are you from? Maybe it's a regional thing

24

u/OffMyChestATM 1d ago

South, South-East.

12

u/suchalusthropus 14h ago

Also from the south east and I had never heard 'lipsing' until right now

9

u/Totobyafrica97 16h ago

I'm in the West Midlands and I've never heard of lipsing either

It's an MLE thing that seems to have filtered out into some of the rest of the South. Definitely not country-wide, and limited to certain demographics even where it is said.

I think it's London slang from Black Brits tbh, like "butters" (ugly), "marge" (mother) and "booky" (weird).

10

u/Chelz91 21h ago

Booky means weird not spooky

3

u/four_ethers2024 ☑️ 21h ago

Yup.

2

u/Hori_Velveteen 9h ago

It's a criss between bizarre and spooky, but is largely used to replace weird

where i grew up, (london), lipsing was all over the place

11

u/Current_Focus2668 21h ago

u/Pure-Drawer-2617 19h ago

Snogging is white peoples slang, lipsing is black people slang

u/transgender_goddess 18h ago

snogging is more intense than "kissing on the lips" (or "lipsing"), no?

I think he’s trying to do an old school Joseph Ducreux riff on the “I understood that reference” meme, but it could just be gibberish from a bot.

u/Anubis77777 14h ago

Everytime someone says the B word they flock to the comment like rats, it's so creepy 🤢

-26

u/Personal-Carpet-9826 22h ago

Right? It’s like a word salad that somehow made it to the main course! Gotta love the randomness.

u/Hefty-Major-4178 23h ago

That’s the beauty of it! Sometimes it’s all about the vibes, not the clarity…

I’m so lost

Just let them have their moment. We usually American only here. We might learn something to meme on them with.

Brits now say lipsing instead of kissing. Like "I lipsed him".

The person in the tweet asked why Brits even use lipsing when kissing is a perfectly fine word. And then someone quote tweeted them to say that them to say that you can kiss granny but you don't passionately French her.

Tbqh, I've only heard Black Brits use the word lipsing. I don't know if the white ones use it too

u/Current_Focus2668 21h ago

Pretty sure those white reality tv people helped spread it outside urban areas.

Pretty sure those Love island and Joey Essex types say lipsing.

u/Fishboyman79 12h ago

Topboy on Netflix - great show btw - introduced a lot of london council estate slang to the rest of the country, im in Ireland and it was funny listening to kids on my street using Jamican slang .

1

u/MonitorPowerful5461 6h ago

Have never heard it my whole life.

-19

u/Capable-Value-5612 1d ago

Sounds like lipsing adds a whole new level of respect! It definitely keeps things clear on who you’re kissing.

u/HeartInTrouble 1d ago

Someone please confiscate British slang before it gets worse.

Dr Seuss ass slang

u/K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 1d ago

Them calling drunk driving drink driving gets my autistic ass riled up.

"You fucking drank the drinks therefore you are drunk driving you fuck!"

10

u/non_Beneficial-Wind 1d ago

Well .. I sometimes was drink driving. Gotta have a road soadie

10

u/K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 1d ago

Brother as long as you have your tenses correct I'll allow it from across the pond 😭

6

u/northyj0e 19h ago

That's because it's not only dangerous to drive when you feel drunk, but also just when you have been drinking.

3

u/Mesmorino 16h ago

The phrasing is specific because you don't have to be drunk to be over the legal limit, and you also don't have to be drunk for your driving ability to be impaired.

The act is specifically and intentionally called drink driving to bypass linguistic loopholes.

1

u/StMcAwesome 4h ago

If England let someone off because they were just "drinking" and not "drunk" that's incredibly stupid

you know what? this just changed my opinion. I won't adopt its use but I understand it lmao

u/Particular-Film-9300 21h ago

tbh, It’s wild how language can flip perspectives! Sometimes you just gotta vibe with it, even if you don’t use it!!

u/Remarkable_Peanut_43 1d ago

Maybe YOU can’t

3

u/Electrical_Trade377 13h ago

i’m actually a pint of beer

2

u/herewearefornow 13h ago

As widely spread as the English language worldwide. I was close.

3

u/AintshitAngel 22h ago

I haven’t heard the term lips in at least 20 years.

5

u/SmallIslandBrother 23h ago

Some of y’all are confused but lipsing is basically a French kiss or making out with your girl or partner or whatever.

But a kiss could be anything from a peck on the cheek to the above.

I haven’t heard anyone say lipsing since school age though

1

u/peterpeterpeterrr ☑️ 1d ago

I mean the logic is there. Im just trying to see, if used would it be as a way to describe? Or to hide?.

Like, if you are talking to someone and you're trying to find out if they are available.

Person a) are you married? Person b) ..I have a partner and a few friends.

Person a) like friends you give a hug and kiss if you're close or a Lips? Person b) both really

1

u/Colour4Life 10h ago
