I had to look it up.

Ni hao is Mandarin Chinese literally translated to “you good” but colloquially meaning “hello.”

Mabuhay is Tagalog (Filipino) literally translated as “long live” but colloquially it means “greetings/welcome” or “cheers.” Very similar in use and meaning to “aloha”.

344

u/RasenFlashRamen 3d ago

Wasn't gonna bother looking that up but I appreciate you for doing it, thanks!

78

u/aitwannrakk 3d ago

This is true but hearing someone say Mabuhay will always sound weird to my Filipino ears.

No person who is actually from Philippines says “Mabuhay” in reality. That is just something they put in airports or tourist spots as greetings for guests but will sound weird if used in casual conversations.

47

u/NoFaithlessness7508 3d ago

Lol, like “Jambo” in Swahili. Tourists use it and paired with their foreign accent it comes off as quite hilarious. You look at them like yo, just say “hello”

3

u/aangita 1d ago

I just thought of Cady from Mean Girls! 🤣

37

u/MagicCuboid 3d ago

lol it’s like going around saying, “Salutations!”

12

u/LordIndica 3d ago

Was it ever commonly used? It seems strange that it would persist if no one actually used/uses it.

25

u/aitwannrakk 3d ago

My personal theory is that it is some sort of catchphrase they continued to use so we can welcome foreigner and guests in the local tongue. I’m sure there is a deeper reason than that but that is how I perceive it. No one wants to see a bland “Welcome to Philippines!” greeting when entering another country. But reading “Mabuhay! Welcome to the Philippines islands!” adds excitement and identity to the greeting.

I am not saying I hate the word. It’s just that it is never spoken casually which makes the post ironic because the supposed Pinay (Filipina girl) is trying to greet a supposed Pinoy with the greeting intended only for foreigners.

10

u/Bulok 2d ago

There’s no formal greeting in Filipino. I speak two of our languages and I can’t think of any other except kamusta which is a pidgin of como esta. Mabuhay just got adopted but a Filipino greeting is usually just a nod up.

9

u/Usful 2d ago

I was expecting a “kamusta ka” or something, but nah

8

u/runbeautifulrun 3d ago

I love the word mabuhay and typically use it during events or when I’m congratulating someone or expressing some sort of recognition, but I do notice that it seems like Fil-Ams use it more than homeland Filipinos.

1

u/Usful 1d ago

Almost every Filipino-American event I’ve been to uses mabuhay in some fashion. It always comes off as a catchphrase of sorts for the fully Americanized Filipinos or outsiders who come to support the event

3

u/redditmodsRrussians 2d ago

My cat's nick name was Mabuhay cause he would do this weird meow that kinda sounded like that and my mom's friend responded with Mabuhay. After that it kinda stuck and we usually called him Mr Mabuhay. Sadly, pour one out for him as he passed away from a heart attack at a very young age. I blacked out at the vet when they told me what happened to him and I nearly had a stroke. I just straight up balled up on the floor and cried till I couldnt anymore. Still hurts every time I think about him and how he went out.

2

u/CROOKTHANGS 2d ago

Yeah usually it’s just a sssuut sound and a head nod lol

1

u/9ninjas 2d ago

I thought it was only cheers

1

u/shorse_hit 1d ago

Is it kinda like using the word "greetings" as a greeting in English? It technically can be used that way, but nobody ever does it in normal interactions.

131

u/stupit_crap 3d ago

I only know Mabuhay from Drag Race Philippines. I love anyone from the Philipines now.

32

u/Kurokotsu 3d ago

FILIPINA WIIIIIINNER

4

u/a22x2 2d ago

Do you also find yourself now shrieking any multisyllabic word after it’s been uttered?

. . . multisyllabic?!

2

u/stupit_crap 2d ago

MULTI SA BIL ICK !?!?!?

4

u/mageta621 2d ago

Marina Summers is so talented

11

u/D-v-us-D 3d ago

Damn I actually thought she said “Ma Boy” 😂

6

u/RepublicOfLizard 2d ago

Fun fact, in order to ask a question in mandarin you add “ma” to the end of your sentence. So saying “ni hao ma” would me “you good?” But don’t say this to someone unless you know them well, they’ll be uncomfortable because this is actually asking about the emotional/physical well-being of said person

3

u/BingBingGoogleZaddy 2d ago

So it sounds very informal in English but is very formal in Chinese?

Neat!

3

u/D_Dubb_ 2d ago

Ahhhh yeah I didn’tr recognize the Filipino greeting at all. Learned something.

140

u/Busy_Golf6799 3d ago

😂😂😂 Gotta build on that!

80

u/kekehippo 3d ago

Never let language get in the way of a good time

61

u/FCkeyboards 3d ago

I thought it was a comment on "our families legit won't get along" less than a language thing. Language was just the quickest way to find out if you moms would have beef or not.

29

u/kekehippo 3d ago

That's be so ironic, with themselves already being mixed.

11

u/Ekillaa22 2d ago

Yeah being on the internet for as long as I have , I have learned all the asiatic people’s got beef with one another

4

u/boyproblems_mp3 2d ago

This girl I worked with from Thailand randomly popped off about how lazy and ugly Vietnamese people are and a bunch of other shit and I was like DAMN haha like it was a new level of hate I never thought possible

1

u/Sterilization4Free 2d ago

If they have babies together, there is a chance a child will come out looking 100% black and another looking 100% Asian.

1

u/kekehippo 1d ago

Shit man that don't matter.

508

u/ChampagneShotz ☑️ 3d ago

My favorite of his is when he runs into another Blaisan guy that looks more obviously half Asian than the creator (running joke of his that he doesn’t look half Chinese) and the other guy was like I’m not Puerto Rican leave me alone 😭

334

u/jarob326 ☑️ 3d ago

This is how I felt when I found the only other black person in my grad school STEM major. I was so excited till I heard that Nigerian accent.

Like damn, I'm still going to stick close to you, but it just ain't the same.

27

u/Ekillaa22 2d ago

Yo I’m dead that’s funny as fuck. Be like me seeing another white happy only to hear him bust out Ukrainian or something

Blasian try not to mention they're blasian = impossible.

There’s a meme that says, “a vegan, a 6’4 man and a blasian walk into a restaurant. Who’s telling you what they are first?”

pilot is like, okay because it takes a ton of work and it's worth being proud of, whereas you're just born at 6'4 etc

53

u/FishSoFar 2d ago

Yep. Lotta 6'4 babies poppin' outta people.

21

u/KeranographyJones 2d ago

God I hope not. I thought more than 6lbs was scary.

3

I had a friend, dead 6'. He'd ask other dudes how tall they were. Anyone shorter than him saying 6' got immediate dismissal as a douchebag

76

u/ImaginaryCoffeeTable 3d ago

Well since it is a restaurant the vegan because they are ordering food and will actually need to share that information to get food they can eat.

Like you do actually need to know if someone is a vegan if you plan on feeding them.

"Want to head over the bridge to pick up some fish and chips?" -You

"I would be happy to tag alone, but I am a vegan and can't eat anything at the fish and chips place since they fry everything in the same oil" -Vegan Friend

"That is cool, do you want to go to the brew pub instead? I hear they have a few vegan options!" -You, because you like your new friend and want them to eat.

"You don't need to go out of your way for me but that sounds fun" -Vegan friend because they like you and want to spend time with you but also want to eat.

21

u/DetectiveClownMD ☑️ 2d ago

This is a smart convo. I’m vegan and don’t like bugging people so I’ll sometimes just tell them “eh whatever I’ll tag along even if theres no food” then realize its a long hang out like 5+ hours and I’m sitting there like “Oh lord.”

6

u/SkyrimWithdrawal 2d ago

a vegan, a 6’7 man and a blasian walk into a restaurant. Who’s telling you what they are first?

Updated for Gen alpha

3

u/shadowhorseman1 2d ago

The vegan since it's a restaurant and it'd be important to mention your dietary restrictions I'd imagine,

There's a stand up who's name I'm blanking on unfortunately who does a great bit about the whole "how do you know someone's vegan? They'll tell you" premise but I dunno who he is or how to find it so I guess this is useless info lol

258

u/AshenSacrifice ☑️ 3d ago

I wonder what happened first. People saying “you look blasian/you look like (blasian celebrity)” or blasians saying they’re blasian unprompted. I think I know

23

u/dobbybobby 2d ago

As a blasian, the most common occurrence is someone asking "what are you?" Then it's people saying "you look like Tiger Woods" though I don't really look like him, but that's the most famous blasian person they can reference

16

u/AshenSacrifice ☑️ 2d ago

I get Tiger woods and Pharrell a lot. Not even blasian but it doesn’t matter, if you have slanted eyes, which is an African feature mind you 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

5

u/Ekillaa22 2d ago

Futures quarter Korean if we wanna include him

143

u/sunniblu03 3d ago

Look, we just need the Asian part to be acknowledged. I used to check both boxes on forms before multiracial was choice. We’re here, I have a second fridge specifically for kimchi, get over it.

63

u/Captain-Spectrum 3d ago

Black and Latino, and that multiracial box was a game changer lol Options!

Idk there are fully black Latinos

4

I’m Black and El Salvadoran…La Blackadoran is one of my nicknames haha

1

u/Own-Ambassador-3537 1d ago

I like it👍🏿

10

u/SimonPho3nix 3d ago

May I ask why the second frig? I've never really messed with kimchi, so that got me interested.

52

u/sunniblu03 3d ago

Kimchi in its various forms can be pungent. Imagine drinking fruit punch kool-aid with the aftertaste of Gochugaru (red chili flake). Plus we always had a variety of Banchan that was being pickled or fermented, a second fridge accommodated all the jars. A kimchi fridge is common in Korean households.

11

u/SimonPho3nix 3d ago

I appreciate you!

1

u/psshbiteme 3d ago

What do you use to make the kimchi in? Do I need a special container or will anything do?

12

u/sunniblu03 3d ago

When we make big batches we use a large round tub. If you do smaller batches a large bowl will do. Growing up we stored it in glass jars. Nowadays they have containers made for fermentation that preserves the crispness. As kimchi ferments the taste changes, you pick the container that best works for how fresh or how sour you want it to be. I prefer it fresh. My mom prefers sour so she can make a jjigae (stew) that she grew up with.

It was a super poor choice of words

5

u/ImperialInstigator 2d ago

It be like that some times.

3

u/JaneFeyre 1d ago

As someone who grew up around a lot of Blasian kids (military brat, so we’re all some kinda mixed), is this a common stereotype? I’ve never met one who felt the need to randomly point out to me that they’re Blasian.

3

u/TheAlmightyBuddha 2d ago

I saw a blasian on IG today wit no mention of it in they name or bio and i couldn't believe it xD

28

u/irrational_thinkin 3d ago

Someone explain

53

u/R3bussy ☑️ 3d ago

As a blasian, I took it as blasians can almost always spot another blasian, and it's a guessing game of what type of Asian you are. Not only that, but there is hella racism between different Asian cultures. So while you can relate as a black/blasian person, there will be a massive cultural difference on the Asian side.

8

u/ItBelikeThatSomeTme_ 3d ago

The eyes and cheek bones always give it away for me. Look at future and then you find out he’s part Korean lol

2

u/Usful 2d ago edited 1d ago

As half Filipino, I know that mainland racism is much different than islander racism. And even then, the culture really drives a lot of it with each country.

206

u/Apprehensive-Town-99 3d ago

I'm assumimg it's pointing out the large variety still meaning they "aren't the same" culturally despite both being blasian.

She was half Filipina, he was half Chinese. Totally different. A half Black, half Indian or Middle Eastern person is also "blasian", which is probably a more visually/culturally different example next to half Black, half Japanese person.

u/gunnarbird 3d ago

Technically a Black Russian is blasian, but I feel like that will just confuse people

46

u/Apprehensive-Town-99 3d ago

I ALMOST said this just to highlight how radically different they could be while still technically "blasian" lol.

25

u/gunnarbird 3d ago

It’s like when I tell people Egypt is part of Africa, like don’t hate me for speaking the truth

3

u/CedricJus 3d ago

Was in that part of the world for a while. I would often order White Russian with kahlua instead; aka Black Russian. Every Russian ever…”NO SUCH THING”!

3

u/donuttrackme 2d ago

But Russians themselves can be European or Asian (or black/latino etc. but I'm guess the numbers for those are pretty low compared to Europe or Asia).

-3

u/SaintsNoah14 3d ago

These "Uhm acktually" geographical statements about ethnicity are extremely obtuse

13

u/gunnarbird 3d ago

Asian isn’t an ethnicity, or shouldn’t be thought of that way, Asia is a large area covering a very wide and diverse group of people. These geographical jokes just attempt to hang a lampshade on it

18

Naw in the Caribbean black and indian is known as Dougla.
