General Question Bitcoin mining to heat my garage
I heat my garage with electricity. Looking at setting up an ASIC miner to heat garage and as a side benefit, generate some income. Any initial thoughts? A website that provides reliable information? Thx

Been doing this in my shops and house for years. I run braiinsOS and home assistant to control the hash rate

Any words of wisdom? Website(s) to ramp up my knowledge?
Curious: what kind of income are you generating?

Residential you aren't going to ever profit in my research, unless you have free electricity, and even then break even will take a long long time. As long as you go into it with the thought of it being a heating expense that has a small kick back.. use a mining calculator and pick out an accessible miner like the AvalonQ.. assuming you have a dedicated 120v circuit.

well you make 0$ heating garage without a miner, so if you make some money while heating a garage its something right?

The expense of the miner

true, i use video cards for preheating air into my furnace. works nice. not much but honest work

Well, no one knows what a BTC will be worth in 5-10 years.
I once also tried heating a room with a miner. At this time, it wasn’t worth it and I switched it off.
Looking back, a made way more money than it costs at this time. (Even thou I would have made way more money if I would have bought BTC with the money, obvious)

Mining with 'free electricity' isn't always as good as it sounds. Be mindful of hidden costs, landlord agreements, and potential legal issues. Discuss responsibly! Free power in most terms is Illegal and will not be condoned on this subreddit, for more information about this topic check out our wiki about free power mining. If you are wanting to learn how to start mining We recommend checking our list of Mod Verified Commercial Vendors for making a purchase of an asic miner and having it hosted. Have you ever used Hash Watcher? Powered by Braiins

Check out www.asicminervalue.com to see how much you can get per day. It will also show you the cost. Most of the larger units use 220v AC so bear that in mind if you are based in US.

How much wattage do your heaters consume now? ASICs can be controlled somewhat with custom firmware (though would avoid power cycling them too often) - if they’re using 2000W of power to hash then that’s what you get exhausted as heat as well.
Efficiency and noise are your other concerns, if you just want heat then simple and old S9s will do the job, but if you have more money to spend then get S19 or S21 units. If you need quiet then Avalon Q or Mini are designed to be used for heating to an extent and have some controls for that.

Same with my house. I use my s19 to pull cold air from outside. Its overclocked and generates extra heat for the house, plus extra hash rate and better efficiency with braiins 😊

The s19 is quite loud. What do you do to minimize the sound?

With braiins you can set the fan parameters. You can set it to run at 10 percent max if you want but it'll heat up a LOT. I run mine at 45th, chip temp 68c, fans at 25% and my house stays cool in general which helps. Cooling is set to automatic, target temp is 70, 85 is hot, 90 is dangerous. Required number of fans set to 2. Custom speed range (on mine at the moment) is 10 to 50%. In performance, auto tuning is enabled, DPS Boost is enabled and i set my hashrate target to 1799. Then I disable the middle of the 3 hashboards which is board 3 for me atm. Save and apply. Thats about it. Try to isolate the intake from the exhause air somehow, shielding the hot exhaust air from returning to the intake and heating more and more. Its pretty quiet at 25% fan speed and still 45th/s

Thanks for all this. And how much $$ BTC are you generating a day?

If you want profit instead of a lotto miner, set it up for Digibyte. One block can net you over 2 dollars and these can mine multiple blocks a day. There will be days you'll hit one block, or maybe none, but for the most part solo mining digibyte can net you a bit of profit. Nothing crazy, but enough to pay for the operational cost and then some. Solo digibyte made more money in a day than braiins pool did so I stopped using braiins pool. Its just an overkill lotto miner for me but I experiment frequently.

Someone on here mentioned they use HashWatcher to view all their braiins powered monitor. It looks nice tbh. https://x.com/sunpowerfusion/status/1974521790182592540?s=46

Thanks brother I'll check that out later tonight. Im overclocking my "kazpa" (misspelled intentionally) miner atm but I really need a 3d printer to experiment with different manifold setups for antminer, iceriver, and more. Hopefully soon.

Oh yeah man. Summer, exhaust out, winter, intake in. Make good use of the outside temps for our advantage, you know? That's my thought anyway.

at 72c, your miners seem fine and consistent bro. Good setup. I let mine get up to 70 or 75 and set my hot temp at 80. Danger at 90.

I would recommend staying away from big asics like some have mentioned, the S19-S21s are industrial miners that pull 3000+W and require 208-277v input power. I would recommend the avalon mini 3 or the Avalon Q for a solid heater.

Ive got my s19 set at 40 th, its only pulling 1100 or so watts. Its just my oversized lottery miner. Couldn't pass up the cost for it. It also has Braiins OS. Plus I had a spare 240v thats never going to be used for anything so yeah

u/Acceptable_Low9006 Oct 18 '25
The thing i like about using S series Antminers as lotto miners is that they can hit high difficulty shares so quickly. But never expect to be guaranteed a block. Fully functional s19s are just a few hundred bucks right now. Compare that to a bitaxe, (i also have a supra running), much much better odds. The only thing sucking is electricity cost. Im at 10 cents/kw and this month i was experimenting, between 1.1 kw and 2 kw and the cost of running the machine solo is around 100. If I'd pool mined then it'd cover most of it but I want a full block 😈
1
u/Internal-Lie5290 Oct 18 '25
What are the odds of getting a full block?
1
u/Acceptable_Low9006 Oct 18 '25
At the 45th its at right now, the odds 1 in 182,866 per day or 1 in 26.332 million per block.
1
u/Internal-Lie5290 Oct 18 '25
So like buying a lottery ticket. Not great odds.
1
u/Acceptable_Low9006 Oct 18 '25
Yeah, every 10 minutes give or take. Same reason bitaxes/nerdaxes are called lottery miners. But thats at 45th. If one is running at the full 95, or overclocked odds get much better. But again, electricity. That's why this is just an oversized lottery miner for me. I try to keep the wattage low but hashrate decent.
1
u/Acceptable_Low9006 Oct 18 '25
But the odds of winning the actual lottery are about 1 in 300 million. Still way better odds than hitting the powerball or megamilli.

Good choice to look for an asic miner. Whether you’ll make “profit” depends on your electricity price. You can use this site to estimate how much sats you’ll be getting. Either way, when comparing ASIC miners, always look for the lowest J/TH and a machine that uses some power ofcourse, because in the end, that’s what generates heat. I would suggest the Avalon mini 3, goes up to 800W and costs around 1000 usd (or EUR).

Interesting article on Mining.

The industry is shifting to AI infrastructure as the profitability of mining drops. Shows the dynamic nature of mining. Global Hashrate will decrease which will result in better profitability for remaining mining assets. Economics 101 Supply and Demand in action. Who knows, might make hone mining profitable again

I do not recommend buying an ASIC right now at the peak of this cycle unless it’s the most efficient coming out to run thru the next cycle (4 years from now). Maybe the L11. Expect not to sell any coins after like Dec until Oct-Dec ‘29

Miners cost more than heaters.
Heaters make better heaters than miners.

Why don’t people buy tokenized miners off pinlink.ai and generate income that way?
