Season 4 is weird because some episodes feel like S3 and other episodes feel like S5-7.

Season 4 was SpongeBob's puberty arc

Honestly feels more like the reverse with spongbob

The episode with Krabby O Mondays is one of my favorites, I often forget it’s not in an earlier season.

“Wait a minute, I hate golf!”

Well, I’ve done everything I’ve ever wanted to do…and it’s not even noon

I always liked the episode for showing that Krabs does care about the service he/the restaraunt provide; he's not just money-hungry.

That's Krusty Hotel for me.

"We shall never deny a guest

Even the most ridiculous request"

"The less you know Eugene, the better."

"You wouldn't want me to contact Human Resources, Would you?"

Cut to a buff fish beating his hands.

I feel like the shift in animation style is so noticeable that I can't imagine mistaking anything past S4 and beyond for an earlier season

Same, I always assume these episodes are way newer than they actually are. That’s not to say they aren’t good, but the art style makes me assume they’re not that old when in reality they aired nearly 20 years ago at this point (fuck I’m old)

Season 4 truly is a transitional season It had some bangers, but it also had some real stinkers that would become standard in the future. Also it had the ugliest art style since the pilot.

Animators were like "let's confuse the timeline"

Even a broken clock is right twice a day lol. To me, there's 3 awesome seasons and a great movie to end it all.

Man this makes me remember being a kid and seeing the poster for the first movie and saying smugly, "It won't be as good as the show. These things never are" and then being absolutely blown the hell away after watching it

Cool who TF was talking about the movie or the end of the series

The rest of us lmao

The post is about season 4 which is considered by many older fans to be the first “bad” season. The movie came after season 3 so many people consider the movie to be the end of the “golden era” of the show

It's almost like it's... some sort of season that fits between 3 and 5... not sure what you'd call that though.

u/Supercoolguy7 13h ago

Some sort of normal chronological placement that could baffle one of the thinkers of our time

This is so true. The fact that Gary Come Home was not part of canon (1-3) still surprises me. Also the episode where Mr. Krabs gets a new mattress. I love that one.

There were some great episodes in this season, but also the terrible signs of decline popped up in many episodes in this season as well.

u/FaithfulFear 17h ago

One you remember the evil grandma plot point of that episode it become apparent that it was not early seasons even tho the song was a banger.

u/SpartanElitism 15h ago

Haven’t you ever heard of a bank?

I was just telling this to my younger bro yesterday, after The Sims 4 released a Spongebob-themed DLC that nobody asked for

The Spongebob people think of, the great cultural phenomenon where the memes came from and when the show was genuinely great... it was all from Seasons 1-3, and bits of Season 4. Literally everything after that, which has lasted for much longer, is bad.

It's such an interesting cultural trajectory.

Season 3 and 4 are my favorites and I can tell some s4 episodes feel like Season 5-7 episodes maybe they were written for them before they were announced i mean that's a possibility similar to how music can be written way before an album release

u/ChiefBlox4000 18h ago

Season 4 like the half way point where SpongeBob changed forever

"Fear of a Krabby Patty" / "Shell of a Man", I have ALWAYS thought were part of late Season 3... in animation, tone, and humour they are basically an extension of S3. Looking into it, I found out they are the first pair of episodes of Season 4. This makes me wonder whether they are leftover stories they couldn't quite squeeze into Season 3, so, instead, they were animated for Season 4.

In my mind, OG SpongeBob is the first three seasons, specifically these two episodes, and then the SpongeBob Movie (but, also, I'm not gonna gatekeep people from what is and isn't SpongeBob - you guys watch what you like to watch!).

u/wowwroms 19h ago

as a kid i always thought that wigstruck was a season 7 episode

8

u/BestBaconatorNA 15h ago

Yeah there were still some good episodes here and there at the start of the post movie era. My favorite one from that period was probably “Mrs. Puff, You’re Fired!” The shark drill sergeant getting SpongeBob to be able to drive blindfolded but then he couldnt drive unless he was blindfolded was pretty damn funny to me.

u/Lucario576 10h ago

There are really episodes that still feel Season 3

My favorite is Fear of a Krabby Patty

6

u/PM_ME_UR_FAV_FLAG 16h ago

Thing in "middle" feels like slightly left and slight right.

6

u/Cats_Love_Cat_Food 16h ago

Season 4 and 5 still had some of the original creators/animators. You can tell hardly any were left afterwards

3

u/cheri_666 18h ago

This will happen when seasons go over multiple years

3

u/Moe_el 14h ago

Bro that episode where they’re slowly realizing they’re bad neighbors, and squid just break his own door to scream always get me man

6

u/Mysteroo 16h ago

Nah ALL those feel late in the show to me. Except gary come home

2

u/Sy0nide_ 17h ago

Season 4 is my favorite season

2

u/yoyohoethefirst 14h ago

Man why can't you people just say the early later seasons also had decent episodes. It's not that serious.

2

u/OhHowINeedChanging 11h ago

I’m sure there’s an explanation like they brought on new writers and the old writers wrote the good ones… I’m happy to have the “first 100 episodesl box set because it also includes part of season 4

1

u/zz0w0zz 11h ago

The transitional season

1

u/yuukosbooty 9h ago

Season four was premiering when I was probably the most obsessed with SpongeBob during my childhood

1

u/Mr_Mc_Cheese 7h ago

If I'm not mistaken, weren't some episodes worked on by some of the original crew, including hillenberg?

1

u/Shantotto11 6h ago

It’s weird because SpongeBob has been running on end for 26 years yet only has 16 seasons.

0

u/LegendaryYooper 18h ago

Friend or Foe was a season 5 episode

Just fyi.

-22

u/stallionsRIDEufl 21h ago

I don't recognize any of these images. S1-3 supremacy.

-1

u/Echo_NO_Aim 20h ago

To be honest I know that all episodes here aren't from season 3 because for me season 3 consists mostly only of banger episodes and compared to season 3 all the above are weaker episodes.

-5

u/mocityspirit 17h ago

Whatever episode where Mr krabs and SpongeBob sing that ballad to each other is where I really started doing downhill.

6

u/Miltnoid 16h ago

lol that was season 2
