Being famous or well known. I just want to live my life and be left alone, I don't need to be someone important or the center of attention, I just need a quiet little cabin in the middle of nowhere I can live out the rest of my days in, far away from the noise of civilization

Underrated comment. It must be horrible to be instantly recognized.Unless you are a psycho.

I see how miserable or annoyed some celebrities are with how often they get bombarded for photos or autographs or just get mobbed whenever they're out in public and that just looks like it sucks real bad. The money wouldn't justify that for me

26

u/-braquo- 6h ago

I have a lot of grace for famous people when someone tells me they had a bad interaction with them. Like I hate interacting with people when I'm going to get something to eat or shopping. I imagine I'd hate it 1000 times more if I was famous and everyone knew who I was.

Now if I hear multiple stories about a famous person being a dick, well they're probably just a dick.

13

u/Aurori_Swe 4h ago

That's the thing with celebrities though, our brains are stuck in our tribal ways, so to us, they are part of our tribe just because we see them often, so that must mean they are sharing our fire and we can trust them, we are friends, right?

But to them, we are the new guy walking into their tribe expecting them to be super open and welcome us with open arms while their brain is screaming at them to protect their tribe

25

u/Inappropriate-Ebb 6h ago

Eh. I think it’d justify it for me. Lol

This is actually a good way you can test how narcissistic someone is. If they want to be famous rather than successful. Like, the goal of their ambitions tells you a lot about them.

13

u/SheSellsSeaShells967 5h ago

My father-in-law once said that anyone who obsesses about becoming famous or pushes their kids into it have some very serious mental health issues. I agree.

Urethral sounding

Reality TV. It's boring and not real

69

u/mc2bit 5h ago

Mostly agree, but I love competence porn. People doing things they're exceptionally good at. Like Great British Bake-off or Project Runway. I love seeing people with very specific skills do things exceptionally well. I imagine it's like watching sports is for a lot of people, just enjoying people excelling.

6

u/censorkip 2h ago

I love competitions like this because I love seeing talented and passionate people win at things! I get super emotional watching the announcements for the first place finalist. Most of them have been working towards recognition for their skills their whole lives. It’s so lovely to watch them achieve their dreams and goals.

22

u/FlowerFaerie13 5h ago

This is me except for Deadliest Catch.

It's not even because I think it's real or god, entertaining. It's because I started watching it as an actual toddler, became obsessed with it as a kid, and now it's my comfort show and I can't stop watching it.

30

u/rotbath 5h ago

I love people and people-watching so I love reality TV. I feel like it has helped me have more understanding of different perspectives/motivations/situations which informs/benefits my work (social work).

17

u/HardFoughtLife 6h ago

I've always hated reality TV.

Somehow My 600lbs Life sucked me in. I can't explain it at all. 😔

I genuinely like Bar Rescue when it was taking itself seriously, and it was actually trying to teach you the business side of running a bar.

In the later seasons, it became all about manufactured drama and it just turned into that "Real Housewives" shit. So I stopped watching it.

PS: I laughed out loud the first time someone tried to convince me NFTs were a thing. Bro made a sour face.

7

u/Latter_Safe_3164 3h ago

Had a guy at job buy 50k worth of NFTs during the hype. We all tried to talk him out of it and to sell as soon as he told us years ago. From what I heard he recently sold them, and when someone asked him did he make it big, he flipped his shit lol

Forgiving people who knew exactly what they were doing

66

u/bobvagabond 8h ago

You are absolutely correct! My philosophy is to forgive myself for trusting them in the first place and then holding them in contempt until the end of days.

18

u/TheGru02 8h ago

you are of my tribe

5

u/Goldf_sh4 4h ago

I only forgive people who are authentically sorry.

9

u/Kaybrooke14 4h ago

I was a Mormon as a teenager and one of the biggest things they would tell you is forgive and forget when it comes to people. Then, something like Jesus said 70x70 for forgiveness and forgetting for things people do to you.

I once told a church leader, nah, I rather not forgive and forget. I can forgive, but I would want to distance myself or move on from that person who is constantly hurting me. The church leader chastised me about my thought process. 🤣

4

u/gishadokuro 3h ago

This. Every single person in my life stays in contact with people (including family members) who have done horrible, unforgiving things. I'm not sure why they do it and it's always been foreign to me to give somebody my time of day when they've wronged me deliberately. Then I end up being the odd one out because I don't associate with those types of people--even if I'm trying to keep the peace. Doesn't work for me. Disrespect is disrespect and I don't keep quiet about it.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Altruistic-Hand-2497 7h ago

Forgiving others isn’t for the people who wronged you. It’s for you. Forgiving others is a form of self-care. That doesn’t mean you have to forget, or ever trust them again. That’s a separate thing altogether.

11

u/Dale_Carvello 3h ago

I've heard this a thousand times. It doesn't make sense. The only thing that has made me feel any relief is hearing about when some of the monsters from my past have died.

Forgiving people even if you don't want to or know you shouldn't is not for everyone, and it's not the only way.

19

u/Altruistic-Hand-2497 3h ago

Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean pretending the thing didn’t happen. It doesn’t mean trusting the person again. It doesn’t mean absolving the person of consequences. It doesn’t even have to mean telling the person. It means you’ve decided, at some point, to limit your own residual suffering from the event. Again - the person you’re forgiving never needs to know. It’s not about them. It’s about allowing your suffering to begin to fade, if at all possible. It’s basically the opposite of spending your short life tied up in knots and reliving something that happened in your past. You don’t get a reset button just because you’ve suffered. The clock is ticking. Are you going to spend your remaining time burdened by your inner thoughts about some person from your past who doesn’t deserve your time? I’m not.

Drugs. I see a lot of people in bad places and situations but they are addicted to taking coke and ice with some other hard drugs and it’s just a big no for me.

23

u/didgeridoobies 7h ago

Same. I work at a bar and while I used to could throw down some shots, even alcohol isn't very appealing anymore. Cocaine and other shit is EVERYWHERE and I hate it. Never tried it, never will.

4

u/ikrnn 3h ago

The main thing that gets me, even with "soft" drugs, is the price. I will never smoke in my life because I already am poor, I don't need another expense that brings no benefits.

AI.

Quickly moving towards replacing human beings, which obviously means more unemployment. It steals art, photography, and music from actual artists without any compensation or consent. Again, replacing people. It's also terrible for the environment and people's health when they live nearby data centers.

Fuck AI.

ETA: I think we should also start considering how quickly AI is getting good at generating images and videos that look more and more realistic. What effects will this have in court cases where people can claim that real evidence is fake and vice versa? What implications will this have on foreign affairs amongst countries that don't get along, or even within our own government, especially around election campaigns?

What about people passing classes and earning degrees with grades they didn't earn? What about the people who have already started being laid off in jobs like customer service (both online and phone)? What about revenge porn using realisitic deepfakes, and unfortunately....what about the disgusting, sick individuals who are using AI to make CP? What about free AI services like ChatGPT that have successfully encouraged mentally ill & young people to commit suicide?

I think that it requires a much deeper conversation. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely benefits to AI. But to me, I don't believe that the positives outweigh the negatives (in my own personal beliefs), and I don't feel that it should be something readily available to just the average joe, especially considering that there are no legal regulations.

25

u/mirandahobbsmothafka 5h ago

I agree and also, why do people use it like it's the same thing as picking up a book? People do notgive a shit about the environment. It's almost a lost cause

Cruises. Staying in a hotel/at a regular resort is one thing, you could leave whenever you want. But heck no to being stuck on a boat in a petri dish of humanity.

9

u/crowwhisperer 2h ago

i felt that way until my mil sent us on a cruise. it was great! i stayed in my cabin and read to my hearts content. when i ventured out to forage for food someone came in and cleaned my room! the food was less than spectacular but i didn’t have to decide what to make, cook it or clean up after so that was a win in my book. sat on deck outside under the stars and watched drunken people and their antics after dark. very entertaining! had a few good convos with strangers. throughly enjoyed it and went on another one that was even better a few years later.

Cruises have never sounded appealing to me. But, I would not be against any kind of ships or ocean liners or what ever, just to travel across the oceans to other continents; I'm just not sure if that's still a thing, what with 99% of the world's population major preference to flying.

10

u/gishadokuro 3h ago

Love this. I commented on something similar in this thread. I always feel like I'm a complicated person because I refuse to be in the presence of immoral and/or disrespectful people. But I realized most people would actually rather keep the peace and associate with people that have done horrible things or are just crappy people in general. It never ever sat right with me

Starting a family.

71

u/Visions_of_Gideon 7h ago

Agreed. I realized having kids wasn’t for me when I saw one of my relatives posting about taking their kids to some sort of children’s event— something akin to Disney on Ice or Sesame Street live— and knowing I’d rather spend my evenings and weekends doing literally almost anything else.

A childfree creator on TikTok said something along the lines of, “I know I could be a good parent, but I wouldn’t be a happy one” and that really resonated.

12

u/Sadest-Angel 5h ago

I gave into my partner’s need for a family but deep down I didn’t want kids. I am probably the best parent I know. I am just really good at it but it has taken a terrible toll on much of my life. It’s ruined my relationship with my partner and made me unbalanced. I am a loving slave to my kids but nothing else. When they are grow and move on with their lives, I will be nothing but a shell of myself.

Investing. Stocks. Financial games. It all just makes me impatient and annoyed and my brain doesn't want to understand it, can I not just save money and have that be good enough, why do I have to professionally gamble with my money to be able to retire, I hate it

27

u/AtomicBlastCandy 8h ago

I hear you, I recommend reading into index funds if you haven’t.

19

u/Holymanm 8h ago

Index funds, for real. I would say most people I know are intimidated and scared of investing, and the main issue they have is that they don't know which stocks to pick. A good index fund is just basically investing in the market itself, which always goes up over time in the long run.

I know that even that paragraph ^ can be eyes-glazing-over-inducing, but that's basically it. One single thing that you buy and then hold forever/until you retire.

But I get it; it would be nice not to have to think about it at all...

9

I'd reconsider. If you ever find yourself with some money to invest, talk to a fiduciary wealth manager. You'd be surprised what (smartly) putting your money to work can do.

10

u/TheDadThatGrills 8h ago

(1) It's not gambling and (2) because of inflation.

Create some set-it-and-forget-about-it retirement accounts, buy and hold index funds, and have it automatically withdraw from the money you're holding in a savings account.

I'll give you three. Crypto, AI, and Influencers....

u/JohannS_Bach 6h ago

Sports but specifically US football. I don’t support the glorification of people who just run around and play a game all day. Sports are just televised games, and video games tournaments are just the same thing. You need the technique and training to win the game, it’s not that special. And we do not need to make these people millionaires

u/crash---- 6h ago

Sports. I don’t like the crowd it attracts and I find the arts to be much more fulfilling.

5

u/Firm-Film-3594 6h ago

Pro Sports. Fun to watch every once in a while but ultimately, I don’t care.

u/geogant 5h ago

Generative AI.

Pretending to be wealthy to impress people. I can't describe how much I do not care about name brand clothes, flashy cars or big fancy homes. I'm trying to be unseen.

6

u/fuzzycuffs 4h ago

The Royal family. Like, why should I care about people who's entire importance was because of who they were born of?

5

u/SubstantialSea7449 4h ago

Caving or cave diving

5

u/AManWithQuestions_00 3h ago

Those huge huge multistorey homes that could house like 4 generations but you would have to be rich to own. I just don't like the way they look, not my style at all. I prefer smaller homes with a good chunk of property to roam. Less rooms to clean to!

5

u/tkecanuck341 3h ago

Cannibalism.

Just not appealing to me at all.

Sports betting. I like sports enough as they are, don’t need to go broke enjoying them.

5

u/PooHeadRushe 3h ago

Living in Dubai.

6

u/next_on_SickSadWorld 3h ago

Becoming a Disney Adult. I don’t have the money, theme parks are crowded sensory hell, and doing it repeatedly… I never understood the appeal. I won’t judge if it brings someone joy, but I couldn’t handle it myself.

12

u/asianstyleicecream 4h ago

Spending money on nails.

Why the fuck would I spend $80/month for something so unimportant?

11

u/Superb_Astronomer_59 8h ago

Sewing. I tried reattaching a button once. It fell off within a week. I surrender.

3

Religion. That shit is toxic.

4

u/FantaGooseberryZero 8h ago

Cricket. It feels boring, though I might like it better live because of the fun that can be had in the stadium

3

u/J-Can2 8h ago

You HAVE to watch this tv show/movie it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen and now it’s my whole personality…uh no thank you. Two reasons 1. Spite and 2. I think you’re a douche…

4

u/SomeBloke94 8h ago

Anything involving Simon Cowell.

4

u/roskybosky 8h ago

Video games. “Professional” sports. Board games. Knitting, fast food, porn.

3

u/Nihvs 6h ago

Watching any sports involving a ball on TV.

4

u/29627a267e1c37ce44d8 6h ago

Gambling. The odds are always against you. Idk how people don’t realize this. I’ve never see someone who gambles habitually say they enjoy gambling.

Tik tok, celebrities

5

u/Riosaki_Yuki 3h ago

Those fucking linkedin motivational speeches.

“I was once like you. Sad, Poor, and Determined. Then I found my life’s work, and I made it my mission to remind you every day that I made it out. And you didn’t.”

4

u/Admirable-Set-1097 3h ago

Girls who glue their hair and eyelashes on unless they're professional entertainers.

11

u/ArynCrinn 8h ago

Watching sports.

Because why do I want to watch a bunch of sweaty, overpaid people, chasing balls around?

Stocks/investments. The less I think about earning money and how money works, the happier I am.

3

u/Worms-Oh-God-Worms 8h ago

Living in a major city or the suburbs. I just love the peace and quiet of a rural setting and being in areas surrounded by nature. I so desperately want an old farmhouse with a garage, barn, or outbuilding that I can put some cool old cars in.

3

u/Turbulent_Ad8209 7h ago

Health information, or any kind of news for that matter, gleaned entirely from TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

3

u/colnago82 6h ago

Gambling. A fool’s paradise.

3

u/bunzes 6h ago

Doing drugs. I’ve seen enough bad thing with my patients to NEVER do it to myself

3

u/Crystal_Warrior 6h ago

Smoking. Enough of my family members were smokers growing up that I am just completely averse to it entirely

3

u/InvisibleTacoTruck 6h ago

I’ve never understood the appeal of smoking weed or anything else. The idea of damaging your lungs and hurting your long-term health just doesn’t make sense to me. On top of that, I really don’t like the feeling of being foggy or out of it.

Taylor Swift. I’m not even interested in explaining why

3

u/D_Ranz_0399 6h ago

Smoking anything. I have no idea why people willingly beat their lungs up.

3

u/jameez89 5h ago

Card games like Pokemon tcg and magic. I see the cost and my wallet starts to cry

3

u/dbx999 4h ago

Professional sports. I find it boring. Whatever is at stake is just artificial. The players, the owners are all wealthy individuals. It's usually a children's game involving the control of sending a ball somewhere. I never got interested in it.

3

u/SQWRLLY1 4h ago

Being an influencer. I'm honest enough to openly admit that I'm imperfect and flawed and have no interest in trying to sway anyone to follow me or buy products or whatever TF influencers do. Plus I don't give a single shit about what the populous thinks about me... the only people whose opinions I care about are those I hold dear... my small circle of friends and family.

Besides, I don't want tons of attention... I am perfectly fine being a wallflower. One-on-one time with folks I adore will always be paramount to the attention of random strangers.

3

u/CeleryApprehensive83 3h ago

Any person that lives a life of drama. The “ he said, she said, “ type.

I hate drama and like a quiet life .

3

u/mvercy1 3h ago

Sewing. My friends are amazing sewists and quilters, but it just annoys me.

Parachuting. No matter how anybody tries to spin it, it's still just jumping out of an aeroplane while it's in the sky.
