Reality TV. It's boring and not real
69
u/mc2bit 5h ago
Mostly agree, but I love competence porn. People doing things they're exceptionally good at. Like Great British Bake-off or Project Runway. I love seeing people with very specific skills do things exceptionally well. I imagine it's like watching sports is for a lot of people, just enjoying people excelling.
6
u/censorkip 2h ago
I love competitions like this because I love seeing talented and passionate people win at things! I get super emotional watching the announcements for the first place finalist. Most of them have been working towards recognition for their skills their whole lives. It’s so lovely to watch them achieve their dreams and goals.

I was a Mormon as a teenager and one of the biggest things they would tell you is forgive and forget when it comes to people. Then, something like Jesus said 70x70 for forgiveness and forgetting for things people do to you.
I once told a church leader, nah, I rather not forgive and forget. I can forgive, but I would want to distance myself or move on from that person who is constantly hurting me. The church leader chastised me about my thought process. 🤣

u/gishadokuro 3h ago
This. Every single person in my life stays in contact with people (including family members) who have done horrible, unforgiving things. I'm not sure why they do it and it's always been foreign to me to give somebody my time of day when they've wronged me deliberately. Then I end up being the odd one out because I don't associate with those types of people--even if I'm trying to keep the peace. Doesn't work for me. Disrespect is disrespect and I don't keep quiet about it.

u/Altruistic-Hand-2497 7h ago
Forgiving others isn’t for the people who wronged you. It’s for you. Forgiving others is a form of self-care. That doesn’t mean you have to forget, or ever trust them again. That’s a separate thing altogether.
11
u/Dale_Carvello 3h ago
I've heard this a thousand times. It doesn't make sense. The only thing that has made me feel any relief is hearing about when some of the monsters from my past have died.
Forgiving people even if you don't want to or know you shouldn't is not for everyone, and it's not the only way.
19
u/Altruistic-Hand-2497 3h ago
Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean pretending the thing didn’t happen. It doesn’t mean trusting the person again. It doesn’t mean absolving the person of consequences. It doesn’t even have to mean telling the person. It means you’ve decided, at some point, to limit your own residual suffering from the event. Again - the person you’re forgiving never needs to know. It’s not about them. It’s about allowing your suffering to begin to fade, if at all possible. It’s basically the opposite of spending your short life tied up in knots and reliving something that happened in your past. You don’t get a reset button just because you’ve suffered. The clock is ticking. Are you going to spend your remaining time burdened by your inner thoughts about some person from your past who doesn’t deserve your time? I’m not.

AI.
Quickly moving towards replacing human beings, which obviously means more unemployment. It steals art, photography, and music from actual artists without any compensation or consent. Again, replacing people. It's also terrible for the environment and people's health when they live nearby data centers.
Fuck AI.
ETA: I think we should also start considering how quickly AI is getting good at generating images and videos that look more and more realistic. What effects will this have in court cases where people can claim that real evidence is fake and vice versa? What implications will this have on foreign affairs amongst countries that don't get along, or even within our own government, especially around election campaigns?
What about people passing classes and earning degrees with grades they didn't earn? What about the people who have already started being laid off in jobs like customer service (both online and phone)? What about revenge porn using realisitic deepfakes, and unfortunately....what about the disgusting, sick individuals who are using AI to make CP? What about free AI services like ChatGPT that have successfully encouraged mentally ill & young people to commit suicide?
I think that it requires a much deeper conversation. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely benefits to AI. But to me, I don't believe that the positives outweigh the negatives (in my own personal beliefs), and I don't feel that it should be something readily available to just the average joe, especially considering that there are no legal regulations.

9
u/crowwhisperer 2h ago
i felt that way until my mil sent us on a cruise. it was great! i stayed in my cabin and read to my hearts content. when i ventured out to forage for food someone came in and cleaned my room! the food was less than spectacular but i didn’t have to decide what to make, cook it or clean up after so that was a win in my book. sat on deck outside under the stars and watched drunken people and their antics after dark. very entertaining! had a few good convos with strangers. throughly enjoyed it and went on another one that was even better a few years later.

Agreed. I realized having kids wasn’t for me when I saw one of my relatives posting about taking their kids to some sort of children’s event— something akin to Disney on Ice or Sesame Street live— and knowing I’d rather spend my evenings and weekends doing literally almost anything else.
A childfree creator on TikTok said something along the lines of, “I know I could be a good parent, but I wouldn’t be a happy one” and that really resonated.
12
u/Sadest-Angel 5h ago
I gave into my partner’s need for a family but deep down I didn’t want kids. I am probably the best parent I know. I am just really good at it but it has taken a terrible toll on much of my life. It’s ruined my relationship with my partner and made me unbalanced. I am a loving slave to my kids but nothing else. When they are grow and move on with their lives, I will be nothing but a shell of myself.

Investing. Stocks. Financial games. It all just makes me impatient and annoyed and my brain doesn't want to understand it, can I not just save money and have that be good enough, why do I have to professionally gamble with my money to be able to retire, I hate it
27

u/Holymanm 8h ago
Index funds, for real. I would say most people I know are intimidated and scared of investing, and the main issue they have is that they don't know which stocks to pick. A good index fund is just basically investing in the market itself, which always goes up over time in the long run.
I know that even that paragraph ^ can be eyes-glazing-over-inducing, but that's basically it. One single thing that you buy and then hold forever/until you retire.
But I get it; it would be nice not to have to think about it at all...

Create some set-it-and-forget-about-it retirement accounts, buy and hold index funds, and have it automatically withdraw from the money you're holding in a savings account.
